This is a place for a nice working lunch or dinner, for those of us working in the city. Set in Spitalfields market, the restaurant has large glass windows and benefits from great natural light during the day. The exotic pizzas are a welcome change to the eternal Capriciosa, Margherita, and Co. Waiters are very attentive to your needs, and very energetic, and will make you want to come back, if only for a quick coffee with one of their fantastic desserts !

I’ve been here twice now for lunch and both times have experienced above-and-beyond service. The first time my friend and I ordered what we thought was the lunch menu at the ‘lunch price’, and although it wasn’t, when we came to pay the bill(and after a little convincing) they were understanding and charged us the lunch price. Super. The second occasion, today, we explained before we sat down that we had 45 minutes to eat and leave. Although it was the lunch time rush we were sat down, immediately offered drinks, about a minute later they took our order, and about 10mins later were served our pizzas. Even the bill came pronto when we asked for it. I can’t fault the food either. It’s pretty much the same as Pizza Express, just a bit less formal. I’ll be back for sure!

It’s more like 2.5. We chose Fire and Stone from the handful of sit-down options after perusing the Spittalfields market around 4p on a Sunday. We very nicely asked BEFORE being seated if they would honor our Taste London card(which meant a 2-for-1 deal on pizzas), even though we did not book a table ahead. We were told that since it wasn’t too busy that would be fine, but were reminded of the usual system. Fair enough and points to F&S for not turning away willing customers and recognizing the importance of bending the rules when it doesn’t put anyone out to do so. Our drink order was quickly taken(something I note since service in London can be quite slow and painstaking), almost before we had a chance to look at the menu. Which overall was incredibly impressive by way of unexpected combos and varieties of ingredients and the sheer amount of options. I settled on the New York: mozzarella, smoked bacon, rosemary potatoes, caramelized onions, sour cream and sprinkled with smoked paprika. I was pretty excited as this mix sounded fantastic. Upon delivery I was rather disappointed, with presentation and taste. The potatoes were finely chopped and heaped on top, overwhelming the entire dish. Also, there wasn’t a hint of rosemary to be tasted among them. Potatoes being a super inexpensive ingredient, that felt like they were filling out what sounded like a tasty mix with the cheapest of the bunch. There was minimal cheese(I mean really minimal) but that’s my opinion based on American pizza styles I’m used to. The sweet onion jam completely took over the pizza, and that’s nearly all that could be tasted(the potatoes took over in texture and volume, but added no flavor since they didn’t seem to be seasoned at all). Lastly, I completely forgot there was even supposed to be bacon in the pizza until halfway through. Smoked meat is quite distinctive, so I was surprised I couldn’t taste it … until I went looking for the said bacon and realized it was more scant than the cheese. Again, I felt slightly cheated about the representation on the menu and what I got. All that being said, I rounded up to 3 stars(instead of down to 2) because the service was fast and friendly, and though I struck out on the New York, the menu is intriguing enough to give it all another go, and I’ll cross my fingers for better luck next time.

Good service and a great and varied menu of pizzas set out in regions of the world. I went for the Cairo and the balsamic onions were amazing. My date had the Bombay, essentially curry on a pizza. I was surprised by just how quiet the area and restaurants are on a Saturday night though. If that’s your thing then I’d get over there.

Not heard of this chain before, the menu looks fab, some really interesting pizzas, not the norm, but my friend wanted to take an item off one pizza and make a substitute and they wouldnt do it! They would take the item off but wouldnt add the chillies! They were served cold next to her pizza(at extra cost) strange attitude. As previous reviewer said hard place to have a resturant right now, not sure they will last.

I’m sure this wasn’t here last time I came to Spitalfields. So rather than going to Leon(again) I thought I’d try this. If you’ve been to one of these before you probably know what to expect. I didn’t and was confronted by a bewildering list of continents and pizzas generally named after cities from each. It took me a while to decide which one to choose but eventually I settled on the Canberra. There was plenty of topping(most of which were chunks of potatoes) and a big dollup of sour cream. It was good but I wasn’t convinced with this combination of toppings. It tasted too sweet somehow but I couldn’t put my finger on it. The desserts were forgettable but I’ll give it another go sometime I’m sure.

Having been to the Covent Garden Fire and Stone branch I wasn’t particularly surprised to receive similar service and quality of food at this new opening in Spitalfields. This branch is in it’s few weeks of opening and it shows. Having booked in advance for a table of 6 with colleagues, our table wasn’t ready and had to wait until a larger one had freed up, for our group to sit down. Just like staff at the Covent Garden branch, service is matter-of-fact almost verging on surly(I’d say the Covent Garden staff are worse) and when the food arrived the pizzas were surprisingly greasy and the texture was terribly grainy. There are so many Pizza eateries in this area you’d have to work pretty hard to compete with the likes of Pizza East, Pizza Express, Strada, Carluccio’s and many of the small quirky Italians around Shoreditch high street. Fire and Stone doesn’t cut it for me and not worth the money if you can get a more delicious slice elsewhere.
