I booked this restaurant for dinner on the final evening, mid September, of our guests’ six-week holiday in the UK. I informed in advance of my dietary requirement and it was considerate of them to suggest an alternative from the course menu when I arrived. However, I left the restaurant with my overall impression of the food and ambience as being ‘higgledy-piggledy.’ The food was very good, some worked better than others. The presentation was disappointing with some — why would belted beef(dark brown), was accompanied with a dark coloured sauce, be served on a dark blue plate? It is not rocket science that dark coloured food would make better visual impact if it was served on a light-coloured plate, white if possible(which this restaurant didn’t seem to have.) The idea of good food without being pretentious may seem great in concept but in practice it could impact negatively on the food. Five courses at GBP35.00 and 8 courses at GBP55.00 seemed very expensive when considering the bare lightbulbs emitting orange light in addition to the pink fluorescent lighting, cutlery placed in a bunch in a bare tin can(for the guest to distribute to the rest of the party), and notices written on A4 paper folded in half stuck on three out of four doors in the restroom area(and one at the entrance!) and the cheapest brand of toilet paper from the nearby off licence. Pretentious places have white lighting and expensive looking everything else for a reason — to enhance the overall impression of the food and the ambience! One of our guests said that this place was ‘creaky’ — a real shame.

Fix throws away the pretension and leaves with top quality food that looks gorgeous. Every serving of the 8 course meal was delicious and always came with a cheery smile and a full an insightful description from the staff. The place is new and quiet but deserves to be packed. I can imagine the location is not helping with popularity however all Hackney residents should stretch their legs for a wee bit more down the road so they can sample it. Personal favourites were the beef rib with savoury granola sprinkled on top as well as the little Donut balls and salty caramel to finish. The only problem with the donut balls is that they came last in a line of delicious courses. I wanted to be able to eat more Well done fix
