I had a meeting in the area and this coffee shop had great reviews. Ok, let’s check it out. Caffè Fratelli is a smallish chain(about 10 spots throughout London and beyond) that serves up sandwiches and drinks. This particular one is tucked away in Duke of York Square. It’s not one of those spots you’re going to find by stumbling into it, but if you know where you’re looking, it’s easy enough to find. The space is set up like a giant fishbowl — in that big glass windows replace the walls so everyone can see in walking by. There’s great light, lots of seats and when you order your drink at the counter, they bring it to your table. Love that. However, the key aspect of a spot like this is to sit and get work done, preferably with a drink or a sandwich. And yet, there’s NOWIFI! Really Fratelli? They told me that I might be able to get on to the Duke of York Square wifi but it was spotty, and sure enough, it was. Awful. The Chai Latte I had was fine but way too sweet. It came pre-sugared with more sugar on top and I almost choked that first sip on it’s sweetness. The coffee seems to get better reviews though, as do the sandwiches, so next time, if I return, I’m all about that. If they had wifi, I’d come back in the area to hold more meetings or maybe get work done. But without that, I have to look somewhere else.

Conveniently located at Duke of York square by John Lewis and Saatichi gallery, Fratelli is indeed a great place for people watching, with a mix of well-dressed locals and messager-bag-carrying tourists in a cold Sunday afternoon. This place feels like a café version of Carluccio’s: plenty of seats and space, decent food and drinks which feel standardized,(relatively) reasonably priced and well-portioned(especially the coffee, the medium here would be a large elsewhere).

Roma style caffe in Chelsea. Located at the Duke of York Square this is fast becoming one of my favourite coffee places. First things first, the coffee is a proper Italian style espresso, a strong tasty shot of caffeine, and served by some hip looking Italians. Couple that with what was the freshest pan au chocolats I have ever had at a coffee chain and already it puts itself apart from all the other take away coffee places. Lately my weakness has become their amazingly delicious paninis, and they serve a variety of warm pasta dishes along with some excellent Italian pastries which makes this a great place for a light lunch. Sleek indoor café space, and in nice weather(or not so nice weather) seating outside on the patio space of the Duke of York Square, this is a great place to rest one’s feet from all the shopping, not to mention ideal front row viewing of all the trendy made in Chelsea action.

Yummy soy vanilla lattes(and they don’t charge extra for the soy milk or vanilla — take that Starbucks!) in a buzzy, convenient Sloane Square location. Sandwiches, baked goods, pasta, etc. available — good place for morning snacks and lunch. Outdoor seating out front for those rare occasions when the London sun makes an appearance!

People watching can’t get more interesting than the combination of King’s Road shopping on a sunny Saturday and a private London Fashion Week event at the Saatchi Gallery at Duke of York Square. For this afternoon’s show I took my corner-window seat at Fratelli Deli and felt like I’d stumbled across the royal box tickets to people-watching world cup. The fashionistas and the rich mummies combined to provide hours of entertainment and Fratelli provided the refreshments, seats and much-needed warmth. Unlike some of the higher-end options surrounding King’s Road, the prices here seemed perfectly reasonable for paninis, pastas and salads of fresh and vivid colours. Everything is tempting and what we tried was tasty and packing a sundried-tomato punch. Despite being hectic outside it was easy for us to get great seats and hold on top them for an hour. Their tea wasn’t the best, but I can forgive Italians for that as cappucinos are their nation’s strong-point. That and people-watching.

Fratelli Deli is my favourite place to have a coffee when I’m doing a spot of shopping in the Kings Road. Situated on a corner of a pedestrianised shopping area called Duke of York Square, it’s the perfect place to sit and watch the world go by as the walls are made of glass which give a really lovely air of openness to the place. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. There have outdoor seating which is great for the hot summer days to chill.
