As a cheap solution for a one or two night stay(I only stayed one), the Griffin House Hotel is ideal, but for anything longer you may want to look somewhere else, this is the kind of place you want to stay purely as a place to sleep. The hotel was clean and well heated, furnishings and décor were nothing special and it’s pretty quiet, but the rooms are really tiny. I stayed in a twin room and there’s not much space to walk around. The shower I had was fitted into the wall with no privacy so it may not be ideal if you’re staying with family or friends. The bathroom was shockingly small, I’ve literally been in airplane toilets larger than this. It had a tiny sink and even if you’re diminutive in stature you may find yourself squeezing through, the space had to be at most 2×5 feet. There was a nice flat screen TV in the room with Freeview, but some obnoxious guest before me had gone out of their way to change the language settings in the menu. There was also no complimentary coffee or tea like you’ll find in most hotels, instead they were available for purchase for unreasonable prices. The beds, were clean and well made. They were comfortable, but I ended up waking up with back ache, whether I slept awkwardly or it was the bed, I don’t know. The breakfast on offer was actually a really nice selection; pastries, cereal, fruit, yoghurt and more, all fresh. The staff weren’t particularly hospitable or warm, however. I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the WiFi. Even though it’s free, it was terrible. The signal was awful throughout the building and constantly dropped out. I tried to make a call over Skype with it and the quality was abysmal and frequently disconnected. Watching a Netflix video was also difficult, I had to leave it for a while to buffer before I watched it. I ran a speed test and it came in around 1.5 MBs download, and 1 MBs upload, not really adequate in this day and age. There was little to no phone signal in the building too, so I couldn’t use my mobile internet as a backup, so be forewarned if you stay there for business and rely on an internet connection. Overall, as I mentioned earlier, the hotel is nice for a one or two night stay, but the facilities are rather poor, and you may want to avoid it if you’re mildly claustrophobic. Very nice breakfast and good beds redeem it, though.
