Hamburger Union(now known as Hamburger +) is surprisingly good for a chain burger restaurant in Europe. You order from the relatively simple menu at the counter and then sit down and wait for them to bring you your food. The place has a nice, modern ambiance, which goes oddly well with the old school bottles you get your Coke in. I got the Peri Peri chicken burger and fries. The bun wasn’t hard or dry, and the chicken was tender and went perfectly with the Peri Peri sauce. The burger was, I think, £7.50 with cheese, which isn’t cheap but not horrible either considering this is smack dab in the middle of Leicester Square. Fries were decent — nothing special. Probably won’t come back again, but it’s a good place to stop for affordable food if you can’t afford any of the more expensive restaurants in the area.

To an American self appointed burger snob, the British can do burgers? Burger Union comes close to a good burger, oh so close. They offer a variety of different burgers, and cheeses which is a good thing. But I stumbled onto this place when I was in London in the late evening after a few drinks and enjoying the sights I got a little peckish. Traveling through Europe for couple of weeks I didn’t eat anything remotely American based on principle alone but since I was working abroad at the time London was the closets to the States I was going to get for almost a whole year so I ordered a Monterey Jack Burger, Chips and a malt. The burger: it was very put together, it was tasty but it lacked the«it factor» that I is critical to a «good» burger but its London not the United States so lets put it into perspective, it might be a «great» burger in London if you are not an American burger-snob. Oh, the chips were pretty good chips, not too oily, not soggy at all. The malt was not too sweet, I could have it again.

I love burgers and I’d been itching to try one of the renowned meaty delights from Hamburger Union in Covent Garden. It took around ten minutes for my cheeseburger to be prepared and the anticipation was building. I’m used to eating kebab shop burgers and was expecting a treat. HU didn’t let me down. From the first bite to the last my cheeseburger was sensational. I would definitely recommend.

These burgers need some type of official recognition for their goodness. A medal, award, a monument; any of these will suffice. Bacon, beef, cheese all packaged in a delicious bun with some salad. No frills, no hoopla, just straight in your face savoury burger loveliness. The milkshakes aren’t bad either. If you’re not up for a beef-fest, get a chicken burger, they’re just as good. I also love the condiment dispensers. The ketchup bottle is shaped like a tomato and that just makes the whole eating experience ten times more fun! OK, so maybe I’m the biggest dork of the universe, but seriously, take my advice, go grub at Hamburger Union.
