Just so you know this review is from an American visiting England and eating German food in London. Yep that’s messed up! That being said Herman Ze German has some really great sausages or as we call them in the USA dawgs. My sausage was crunchy on the outside and had just the write snap to it but it was soft on the inside. The way they are in Chicago! Herman Ze German is a small place with great food and not too much seating. So this means you get to eat standing up or cross your fingers you get a spot at the table. As an FYI its well worth it! In my opinion Herman Ze German hat sehr gut essen und nicht so teuer! I am looking forward to eating there the next time I am in London.

I headed down to Charing Cross to attend a seminar at the hotel in the train station. But it was right after lunch, and I needed something to eat. I’ve been wanting to give Mr. Herman a go for ages, so I stopped in to grab something for lunch. The venue is tiny, so I had to get it for takeaway as there’s only enough room for about eight people. Good thing it was a sunny(but cold) day, and Trafalgar Square was oh so close. I’m a bit of a spice fiend, so I opted for Ze Über Ding. Chilli Wurst? Check. Jalapenos? Check. Cheese? Check! Fries? CHECKCHECKCHECK! They also melt the cheese and jalapenos in a pan and dump it on top of the sausage so it’s oozy and amazing. And delicious and spicy. I also got some potato salad to try(and probably could have done without). I did really enjoy it. I’m sure I’ll be back sometime.

If you’re after something simple and cheap, then this is the place to go. Offering different combos, with so many toppings, you’ll never get bored. However, due to its location it can get very busy and the last time I was here there was a long wait.(Visit — 17/07/2015 Dinner)

Chaotic sums up the experience. Server looked like he was in a trance when I gave him my order. Servers interrupt and talk to each other while talking to a customer. Selfish customers waiting for orders occupy the pitifully few seats leaving those with food to juggle and find a spot on a shelf over the(covered) rubbish bin. The final insult — £8 for bratwurst in roll and large drinking cup of fries.(Curious why a German-themed eaterie would insist they are pommes frites another symptom of the confusion running through the place.)

In Soho there is an ever expanding list of delicious places to go and try. However, many of these places are absolutely useless if you’re in a rush. While sometimes it’s lovely to have a leisurely dinner, sometimes you need to be in and out and if so, this is your place. Specialising in German sausage, it is very no frill. You choose your sausage, whether it comes with a bun, salad or chips and you’re done. They have some toppings you can add such as curry sauce, onions, cheese, pickles etc which are great. The chips can also have toppings if you wish. With rotating specials there are a lot of combinations to try. As it was my first time I went with a simple bratwurst and it was really nice. It was served in a fresh, white crusty roll and topped with mustard and tomato sauce was gorgeous. Be warned — it’s very filling. For a meal that topped out at £10 it is tasty and impeccable value.

So, I had just got off national rail at Charing Cross and I was feeling pretty travel sick and in need of food. I stumbled over to Herman Ze German, legs shaking, praying for a seat and some food and… nope. It was packed. Fair enough, totally my fault for getting there at 12pm and thinking they’d have seats considering they’re a tiny shop on Villiers Street. But it was barely even standing room only, it was so busy. We managed to scrape a spot by the wall with a table so we had somewhere to lean and eat but some chairs would have been nice! I wasn’t sure I could handle meat, still being pretty sick and shakey, so I ordered the veggie sausage. But they didn’t have any left. At 12pm. The only vegetarian thing on the menu short of chips. That was a little annoying too. So eventually I settled on a classic Bratwurst. And it was good. Like, seriously. SO good. The sausage was crunchy on the outside and soft inside, the crispy onions were delicious and I don’t even like onion, and the bread was firm enough to hold all the sauce I covered it in. None of that a bit of ketchup and it falls apart situation here! The food was so good it negated the lack of seating or veggies. YUM. I also had some of a melon type fizzy drink thing, I can’t remember the name of it, but it was delicious. I love melon so that was a perfect way to wash it down. I’d definitely be back again. And now I know about the seating situation, it’ll be a grab and go so I can sit on my train full and happy. Thanks ‘Herman’!

This place has a really cool atmosphere. The staff, the seasoning, and the concept were all a fun experience for me but I didn’t totally love the bratwurst which is why I gave it 4 stars. I’ll go back and try some others.

Popped in here on Saturday night on our way to a late-night museum showing. The staff weren’t exactly friendly — when one of them informed me that there was no chilli wurst, and I asked if there was anything at all with chilli on it(my partner likes having his head blown off during every meal…), the woman on the counter got quite tetchy with me and repeated that there was NO chilliwurst(which wasn’t what I was asking — as a sober London-dweller with an RP accent, I can’t have been too difficult to understand, so I’ve no idea why she got so grumpy). After which she told me that I could put jalapeños on the dog. So there was an option after all… Not a great start! So, in the end, we both ended up with bockwursts, my partner with jalapeños, and me with crispy onions, and some fries. He really enjoyed his, and I wasn’t overly impressed — it was filling, and tasty, but I didn’t think it was anything particularly noteworthy in terms of German cuisine. I’ve had better, and worse, takeaway German sausage, in England and in Germany. Overall, nothing wrong with it. Tasty, filling, and cheap, but not a culinary experience to put off for a long time in anticipation(I’ve been excited to go for two years!) or you’ll be disappointed, and possibly told off if you dare to hunt down jalapeños when they’re out of chilliwurst!!!

My husband found us Herman Ze German while we were wandering London on a Saturday, and we ended up having a great lunch here! It’s a small place but very bright and clean, and the guys working the counter were friendly. There aren’t a ton of sausage options, but what they have is very good, and there are plenty of toppings and sauces to choose from. My husband was sensible and had a chili wurst(£4.45) topped with mustard and sauerkraut. I was adventurous and tried«Ze Wilde Bock Roll»: an insane combination of bockwurst, curry sauce, crispy onions, mayo and fries(£5.95). Why have I not thought of putting curry on a sausage before? It’s delicious! I ended up picking the fries up off the top and eating them on the side, but they were crispy and yummy, and the whole combination surprisingly worked really well. Quick service, great food and low prices = 5 stars.

The service here was fantastic and it has been the first German bratwurst spot I have found that is even slightly close to being in Germany. Quick service and great food.

Oh, how many great evenings we’ve had here. This little shop has fed me plenty of times and food is the best. Everyone is obsessed about the curry sauce, but honestly, cheese fries are heaven. At this tiny kingdom, they make fast food taste better, but also grill the sausages so It is a lot healthier. Having lived in Berlin, I have to say they get pretty close to German ones. H ze G is my favourite place to eat after a hangover. You must give it a try.

Probably the best hot dog I have ever eaten in my life. Crisp sausage with a juicy core. Delicious fries perfectly seasoned. Spent about 20 pounds for 2 soda, 2 dogs with fries and extra side of cheese fries.

Herman Ze German!!! where have you been all my life?!? honestly I have gone past this place a million times. I often made fun of its name but I never dared to go in! It just looked like a shitty tourist hole in the wall! Well this ladies and gents is a fine example not to judge a book by its cover! Ze Über Ding! you have won me over! Chili Wurst with Jalapeños, Mustard, Fried Onions, & Cheese… I asked for Sauerkraut and Pickles(Gherkins) on mine as well… what a tasty treat indeed! best hot dogs outside of America!

I still don’t understand why Timeout have such an obsession with the restaurant, it’s average. Completely average. Nothing more and nothing less. I can see the benefit of going here after a couple of drinks, but that is it. Heard mixed reviews of this place as well from friends ranging from horrendous to amazing.

Best wurst in London. The curry sauce is amazing. The wursts are delicious, flavourful, and have a bite to them. Apart from the wursts though, other things on the menu that deserve a mention are the schnitzel and the fries/frittes. They are crunchy, crisp, and freshly made. They have a huge selection of German soft drinks on the shelves. I particularly liked the cola and the lemonade.

They claim that their Wurst is Ze Best… I had a bit of time to kill before heading back to work, so I thought I’d check out if Herman Ze German lived up to its expectations! I got Currywurst with chips. The wurst was good(not too greasy, good flavour), but I’m not sure I liked the curry sauce that much(it was a bit too sweet for me). The chips however were very VERY good(with loads of curry-salt)!! No matter what you do, GETTHECHIPS(and probably the free crispy onion topping too, because YOLO)! Currywurst + Pommes was £5.95 I think. Rolls around £5. Sounds like a great lunch deal to me!

Holy deliciousness. I’m usually not really into soy products or meat substitutes, and try to get most of my nutrients naturally, but I have a weird fondness for vegetarian hot dogs. That said, they all taste so damn artificial. That notion stopped when I ordered and devoured the veggie wurst from Herman Ze German. It was, by far, the best vegetarian sausage I’ve ever had — ever. We ordered our ‘wurts with some cheesy pommes, a departure from our normal healthy code of eating ethics. That said, so worth it. They were super crispy and well seasoned, and the cheese had this incredible depth of flavor, unlike the highly processed varieties you may find at other chains.

Stopped in for a quick brattie after a gig at Heaven. Bratwurst are my one of my favourite foods; the best ones I’ve had being the krakauer at London Bridge. The service was fast and the place looks cute and clean. We had the bratwurst, with all the toppings which I was pleased about, because the sausage itself was pretty bland. Not the best one I’ve ever had, but sated a brattie craving for a while until I head back to Berlin.

It’s sausages and pommes, and to be honest, having just come back from Berlin, it’s pretty close to the ‘real’ thing! A slightly hungover me went in for some lunch and walked out a much happier person. Never seen their method of making fries before but they are tasty! I think it’s a really big version of an Actify that rotates vertically instead of horizontally. What does come out is a nice crispy fry that holds sauce well. This location doesn’t have much seating and what it does have is tight, being beside Charing Cross it’s also quite busy. I recommend getting the Currywurst with Pommes, although I’ll let you choose what sausage to get, I think they’re all good.

I don’t get all the amazing reviews??? I had the bratwurst in a bun and side of fries. My meal was average at best. Given my German background, I’m a little insulted that this is passed as good German food. The Bratwurst itself was OK but served lukewarm. The bun was just terrible — cold, hard and too large for the size of the sausage. The Sauerkraut was tasteless. So incredibly disapointed. Fries were the«wurst’ I had in London. Small, hard and overcooked. It’s cool that they serve Fritz cola from Hamburg which I enjoy on my many trips to Hamburg. They also have local Hamburg brewed beer«Astra» available. Again… I just don’t get it. Very disapointed and no expectation to return. BK

Oh, how lucky we are. Deutsche Esskultur goes global.
