Ok. So now I HAVE gone to Song Que. Several times. I still like Hung Viet better. Their bun is better. Song Que has good phở, but so does Hung Viet… AND it is less expensive and less busy. In the competition of Song Que vs. it’s lesser known neighbor Hung Viet, I STILL, 1.5 years and many bowls of noodles later, choose Hung Viet.

Don’t be fooled by the décor. The food is fresh, cheap and you can bring your own booze. Try to avoid being seated by the door, on account of its cold but it is still home to the best soft shell crab in Shoreditch. They do deliveries too and in case you were wondering, a morning glory is a vegetable.

Yum! I came here with 3 friends on a Friday night and we were seated straight away. We chose it because it was recommended for vegetarians and the selection on offer did not disappoint! I had summer rolls(which came with hoisin, not fish, sauce), and a yummy chilli and lemongrass vermicelli dish, which I couldn’t finish — the portions are huge. We each paid less than £10, which makes Hung Viet a winner. BYO too, which is great!

How is it that this place does not have more reviews? It’s quite a charming and rather small restaurant on Kingsland Road, with a warm and welcoming atmosphere, and usually quite busy. Service was friendly, the food was very tasty, the portions were generous and the price excellent. In my view this is one of the better choices in Kingsland Road and should not be neglected.

Excellent, small Vietnamese restaurant next door to the larger and famous Song Que. We came in starving and had salt-and-pepper tofu to start, followed by Tofu Hor Fun(flat rice noodles) and Spicy Tofu and vegetable soup. The servings were generous and the food relatively tasty, but it didn’t quite have the wow factor that that I was hoping for. It might well be though that those going for a straight meat fix would have had a better experience. The service and general friendliness of the place was a really strong plus, as was the excellent value for money, much better than the other restaurants along the strip I have tried to date. They are also happy for you to BYO wine/beer. This is a small, intimate restaurant, with friendly service that doesn’t rush your meal or rush you out the door. Definitely worth a look if you are in Kingsland Road and want to try something a little different.

My family and friends visited Hung Viet yesterday evening. The service was excellent and the food superb. A particular favourite are the stuffed dumplings with prawn and the deep fried soft shelled crab. Outstanding. The kids loved the wrap and rolls. However, the reason we go back there rather than try others is the fantastic service. The staff are friendly, not pushy and accommodate groups large and small. They didn’t bat an eyelid when we had an impromptu Elton John singa-long! Its also a nice touch that they allow you to bring your own drink. This adds to the relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Although Vietnamese food may be better elsehwere, for atmosphere, service, value for money and the comfort of the surroundings you won’t find a better place along this stretch of Kingsland Road. I had a fantastic birthday meal there and I am already looking forward to my next visit.

I had the duck and pak choi phở, £6 for a massive steaming bowful full of fresh herbs and tasty duck. Just what you need to warm you up on these cold snowy days. Currently my fave out of the vietnamese on the kingsland road due to the fast friendly service and tasty food.
