Good sandwich for sure, but the hype, line, and cost made it somewhat disappointing. I was expecting more for some reason. I make as good a grilled cheese at home. Nice blend of cheeses for sure.

Omg. The sourdough bread is toasted to perfection with the cheese and onions melted amazingly. Had this trip to the market planned for months and finally made it to London and spent the morning walking around and finally found the spot. So glad I did and would recommend it to everyone stopping by the market or if you’re traveling make sure to add this to your trip to London.

***NOTE*** We had trouble locating the restaurant using Unilocal. It’s actually located in the outdoor area along with other vendors that use tents for covering, on the eastern part of the market. The raclette — a cheese toasty — was incredibly delicious!!! Hey shred so much cheese onto the sourdough bread before they drop it onto the sandwich press. The cheese is incredibly fresh — shaved onsite right from the wheel. And the sourdough is literally perfect! You combine those two items on a sandwich press and you get a beautiful combination of cheesy goodness! The cheese melts all over, while the sourdough develops the perfect crust to compliment the gooeyness of the cheese. As if that wasn’t enough, the addition of the onions & leeks provide additional flavor that further enhance the sandwich itself! I’m telling you, it’s well worth it! We(my wife and I) went on A Thursday at about 2:30pm and the line was only about 6 – 7 people. Between the two of us we were able to share 1 sandwich making it a great and delicious value.

I was in London yesterday, While came across this food spot located in the Borough Market on the South bank. It was excellent. They have a small booth at the Market that seemed consistently busy. There are two things on the menu: one is a 3 melted cheese sandwich and the other is a small plate filled with new potatoes, gherkins, and pickled onions and then a heaping mound of cheese that has been melted with a Swiss raclette scraped on top. It’s sheer heaven! This filling snack just costed £6. Best cheese sandwich I’ve ever had in my life :) Its a must try If you pass through that place.

Located inside Borough Market, this is a great lunch place for tourists who would be getting lost in the great culinary scene that Britain has to offer. And no, I’m not being sarcastic. You cannot go wrong with a raclette here. It’s creamy, served on hearty, fresh bread, with a bunch of gherkins and pickled onions on the side. It’s so rich, but somehow you just cannot put it down despite its artery clogging qualities… Share this with a friend. There are many delicious foods around the market, you can take your time to decide which one is your favourite.

I can’t really say anything that anyone else hasn’t mentioned. The sandwiches are great! Just know that there are TWO lines: one for the grilled cheese and one for the raclette.

The only reason I’m giving it 4 rather than 5 stars is that it’s always completely rammed at lunchtime, and I find it fairly stressful to actually procure the food(like all of Borough market, it’s heaving, so after you’ve paid and got your ticket and queue up, people are trying to get to some other bit of the market, and you’ll probably spend the whole time you’re waiting being jostled by others, which I don’t find relaxing.) But the sandwiches are just about worth the hassle. The flavours are excellent, basically it’s great bread, great cheese, and patient toasting with care. The leeks/onions add both texture and flavour. I’d recommend trying to go earlier in the week slightly outside of 12:30−2pm if possible to avoid the crowds, the one time I managed that it was definitely a 5* experience.

This was a good cheese toastie. The cheese quality is great, they toast the bread well, good ingredients all around, and smart handling of the line with an efficient ticket system. That said, this is just a cheese toastie and there’s really nothing particularly exciting happening here. Maybe I’m spoiled with good food, or maybe most grilled cheese sandwiches in London just suck in comparison or something, but the sandwich didn’t wow me. If I had got this sandwich without the hype, I would have said, «Mmmm, nice cheese toastie, would eat again» and moved on with my life. Somewhere along the way this place became a legend, but after waiting 45 minutes for a this I had to wonder why in the world I waited 45 minutes.

De la vraie raclette ! Rien de plus à dire. De la vraie raclette, avec le vraie goût, sur assiette avec des petites patates. C’est parfait. Attention à l’énorme queue qu’il peut y avoir !

One day, oh say, probably about ten years ago, I was perusing YouTube and happened to come across a video of the Kappacasein stand in Borough Market, what with its half wheels of raclette bubbling under irons only to have the melted cheese lovingly scraped off onto a bowl of potatoes. How can you not fall in love with that?! I came to London this past January, and low and behold, my heart was broken when it was not a «full market» day, so there was no Kappacasein stand. This time, I happened upon the market with a friend after visiting the Tower of London and literally lost it when I saw the Kappacasein sign. This visit was over ten years in the making and for a true foodie(and retired cheesemonger… all hail raclette!), it did not disappoint. I opted for one of the grilled cheeses and it was hands down one of the best sandwiches and most definitely the best grilled cheese, I have ever had. I’m sure that has to do with the mounds to shredded raclette, the green onions, and the butter involved, but hey, its vacation, its London, just get one and enjoy it!

Wow. You may be a walking blob of saturated fat after visiting Kappacasein, but frankly, you won’t care. I haven’t visited the dairy, but I’ve sampled the Borough Market stall’s raclette, and cheese toastie: I think the word ‘NOMNOMNOM!’ will suffice…

I went because of the hype and left wanting to come back again and again. The best cheese toastie in London, not sure there is much competition, but a good title to have. The stall is easy to find in the front section of Borough Market and is reasonably priced. You’ll have to eat this standing up unless you are lucky enough to find a seat nearby. Note: after eating a three cheese toastie there is a strong feeling of regret. Delicious yet unbelievably unhealthy!

I visited Borough market(and waited in a huge queue) specifically to try their grilled cheese — totally worth it! Seriously the best grilled cheese ever, and completely unlike any other. £6 and a lengthy queue are nothing compared to this!

A must visit when going to Borough market. Though the last time(April 2015) I went, I swear the size of the toastie is thinner and the cheese less goey. Was always amazing but something seems to have changed. Was actually disappointed in comparison. Will get the raclette next time though.

The best grilled cheese sandwich I have ever had. This gem is nestled in Borough Market and for £6 you get a sandwich loaded with ogleshield cheese and a 3 onion mixture of red, white, and green. The sandwich is pressed and the cheese is melted to perfection.

If you dream of cheese, you must visit Kappacasein at Borough Market! They literally have wheels of melting cheese at their food stall. The cheese toastie(£6) is absolutely delicious: a heaping handful of cheese with leeks and onions sandwiched between two slices of rustic bread. It is the best cheese sandwich you will ever have in your entire life. Full stop. Want to return to try the potato raclette. Oh, melting cheese, how I dream of thee…

The best goddang grilled cheese/sandwich I’ve ever had in my life. The rich, flavorful cheese melted between crusty bread… indescribable. The lines are long but move quickly. The potato raclette is the best show you’ll ever watch in your entire life. Skip Broadway. The silky succulent cheese melted off the hand cranked machine onto your potatoes will literally make you salivate on the spot. The absolute best stand in Borough Mkt. I’ve been to the mkt several times. I just skip everything else and make a beeline for this stand Heaven on earth!

Literally the best cheese sandwich I’ve ever had in my life. I’ve eaten at Kappacasein more times than I can count, both when I was living in London and on every subsequent visit. Their cheese«toastie» is this magical combination of cheeses, leeks, onion and garlic on sourdough. It’s something everyone should experience.

It’s amazing what some fresh chopped red onion and leeks can do to a grilled cheese! On my visit, it was sourdough with cheddar, Comte and more with onion and leek. Grilled panini style to order. Very tasty but a tad overwhelming — try to split one between two people if you can. Also, try to have a sweet drink to hand to wash down all that salty goodness. It was good but not life changing … With the right cheese, you could make it at home. I didn’t try the raclette(which is a non-bread/wheat free /gluten free option) mostly because when she said one line was for sandwiches and one for the raclette, I went in the line for the thing I knew what the hell it was. My lack of Swiss food prep was unfortunate as it’s pretty cool: basically they take a half a hunk of wheeled semi-hard cheese, and set it under a broiler/grill. Then they scrape the melted top layer off onto cooked small potatoes. It’s cool to watch and looks really good. They scrape it off and hand right to you, so there’s not that disappointment of eating cooled, starting to set melted cheese. £6 for either a sandwich or the raclette. I’d go for the raclette!

You can literally smell this food stand from a mile away. The weird thing is. It smells horrible from a far but the closer you get the more enticing it smells. The cheese sandwich is ridiculously good. The bread is perfectly buttered and toasted and the cheese is melted to perfection. It’s salty, crunchy, warm, and just overall so satisfying. The only downside is that it’s £5. While I wouldn’t normally complain about a £5 sandie, at the end of the day… It’s just bread and cheese.

I want you to understand when I say this is the best cheese sandwich I’ve ever had in my life, I mean it. In fact, I’d go as far to say that it is one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever had in my life — top 10 for sure and more than likely top 5. I was told I needed to get to Borough Market to try this out by some colleagues, so over the weekend I went on an adventure. Being new to the city, I’d never gone here before but I figured it was worth the trip. Borough Market is huge and finding one stall without knowing where it is can be an issue. But I was up for the adventure and began to wander. I first tried the giant stalls with printed signs above their booths — the seemingly permanent ones in the main area as you walk in. Nope. So I crossed over the road into the area that read«Green Market» and made my way through the tents and stands here. There, in the back, near the church, was Kappacasein. It’s a little stand with tons of cheese. I’m talking stacks and stacks and stacks of it on one side — you really can’t miss it if you’re looking for cheese. On the other, the sandwiches, being prepared and ready to go. When you order, they toast it and get it to you ASAP. So what makes this sandwich amazing? Honestly, I don’t know. It was warm, delicious, filled with veggies like onions and leeks and greasy(but not in a terrible way, in a finger-licking kind of way.) Every bite was crazy and with some beer, this is the perfect meal. I took it and sat on the steps of the Church right near there and had a very good lunch. A very good lunch indeed. Now, if I could only say the name of this place correctly, then we’d be good to go.
