This is a very affordable place to eat, though it should be noted that portions are small. You get what you pay for, and yes, it’s pretty authentic Thai food(run by Thai people) so if you’re hankering for some green curry while in the area, this is the place to be. Don’t forget to grab some Thai iced milk tea!

I have so much time for this little place. It’s unpretentious to the extreme with quick service. Tasty Thai fare, BYOB and über cheap. Don’t forget to bring cash, as they don’t accept cards. Popular for good reason, if the place had rafters, it would be full to them. Go, just go — I implore you. You’ll soon understand.

Amazing food and so cheap and so crammed and popular which is always a good sign! Friendly staff! Cash only! I had a curry, satay chicken and a ginger tea and it was less than a tenner!!!

Marie’s is such a hole in the wall spot and you may miss it if you’re not looking. We randomly stumbled upon it after a long day of walking and having a craving for some Thai food, my parents and I decided to check it out. The restaurant is pretty small and intimate and we seemed to have gotten there before the dinner rush so had our choice in table. As we were about to leave, a party of 17 came in and practically filled the entire place. Prices were cheap and did not take away from the quality of the food. We had a fine meal — pad thai, yellow curry, Singapore noodles and rice. Great mom and pop shop in the Waterloo neighborhood that’s worth the visit. Also, from what it looked like, it was a BYO restaurant.

Lovely, simple Thai dinner at great value. Staff was pleasant, food came very quickly, and we quite enjoyed the cramped, home style atmosphere. Highly recommend for a simple, quick, enjoyable and authentic Thai dinner or late night snack.

Hanging around near Big Ben and found this restaurant not far away. Ordered a rice with chicken and oyster sauce. Cheap and tasty!

Want to extend my review for this one. Loved going here when lived nearby. It is run by a couple and can seem a bit rough around the edges but once you become a regular you’re like family. The British breakfast is my absolute favorite in all of London — for £4.20 — insanely big traditional British breakfast — especially love the chips. Thai food is decent too, and quite healthy portion sizes. It does look rundown the restaurant but the prices are so reasonable and once you get to know it, you will love it!

Gem in London for well-priced Thai food. Bring cash, your own alcohol, and a big appetite.

Great place. Best breakfast on the South Bank. Very affordable. Sue, who is always there, remembers your order. She’ll sub items on the menu for Americans like me who don’t want pork and beans for breakfast!

I don’t get what all the hype is about. Over greasy, low on flavor food. Sure, it’s ‘kitsch’ because it’s an English café during the day– but I won’t be returning… I’ll stick to Rosas, without a question. Fish cakes were rubbery and inedible. Satay sauce was nothing special– how do you go wrong with peanut sauce? Yellow curry was the best item– but it was only relative.

This place was where I finally completed my quest for«genuine» Thai food in London. I’ve had Thai cuisine from a few other Thai restaurants and I must say they were far from my definition of the true Thai taste. Then Unilocal led me to this place when I was around Waterloo station. Now get to the point: food was AMAZING, I had Pad Thai prawn and tom kha chicken, both was great and the total cost was around £10−11, and dishes were served sufficiently fast. I would definitely come back to try more from the menu

A great example of a long running business that still cares about what it does. Cheap as chips, always packed, it’s a local institution and deserves to be. Keep going guys!

Ridiculously cheap Thai food in portions large enough to satisfy the greedier gourmand. Tucked round the back of Waterloo station we had starters(prawn tempura and beautiful tasting Thai fish cakes that were better than many I’ve had in far more salubrious establishments) and mains with soft drinks for less than £10 each. The only hiccup was that my friend was delivered what turned out to be someone else’s dish by mistake, but they were very jolly about it and the food was still delicious(and he was happy enough with what they gave him not to point it out hiimself!). My chicken massaman curry was similarly rich, delicious and generously proportioned — will definitely go again whenever I’m in the area and in the mood for Thai!

BYO Thai café… Food is cheap and delicious! Gets pretty busy so be prepared to wait a little bit if you get there in the dinner rush.

Caff by day, Thai by night. If you can stand the queue(or get in early enough) the food is really, really nice.

Doesn’t look much from the outside. Service is comical but friendly. Traditional London ‘caff’ by day, Thai restaurant by night. This place was so unlikely, I wanted to love it. But food just didn’t deliver. The Tom Yum soup was one-dimensional and dense, and the Thai curry, average. Shame, but that’s how it goes sometimes.

Marie’s is a Brit Café by Day and a Thai Restaurant by Night. This is cheap cheap cheap food in a setting that matches — a dingy and down and out place near Waterloo Station. The street it is on is gentrifying quickly — which is not a good sign for cheap dingy cafes. The food is fully adequate and gives good value for the money. Fish cakes are tasty(but rubbery). Various curries are served in small servings with a lot of rice — but they taste good and they fill you up. If you are saving your pennies and want to eat cheaply without eating in the train station — Marie’s can take care of you. Thai food definitely beats a cheap cornish pasty, or the standard train station baguettes.

Crazy little place in a crazy little street near Waterloo station. I mistakenly took Unilocal advice and tried to use the internet in this place but they don’t have it. Still I needed a quick coffee and cheese roll so this place fitted the bill. Lady who served me was very nice and helpful so will try a Thai meal there at some point.(soon)

I’ve only eaten at Marie’s during the evening when it serves Thai food so can’t comment on its daytime greasy spoon incarnation, but what I have had there has always been great stuff. Excellent value and good sized portions. I really can’t understand what the other commentators mean when they say the portions are too small, spoiled by unnecessarily large platefuls elsewhere, perhaps. Size isn’t everything, after all, and what Marie’s serves is fantastic quality over super size me quantity. It’s absolutely ideal for grabbing a meal before a visit to the Old Vic. Fast service, tons of atmosphere, stonkingly fresh food, and the best Tom Kah Gai for miles around. No license so bring your own bottle with £1 per person corkage. On last night’s trip, four of us got through four starters and five mains between us for just over £40 and every mouthful was delicious. Cheap, cheerful, and heartily recommended.
