Excellent quality meat, friendly and helpful staff– but they fall down when it comes to preparing something to order for a particular recipe. This is the land of yummy mummies buying rib-eyes and organic guinea fowl and fancy sausages — just grill/roast and add salad– and that’s all fine. But if you want something butchered, or if you ask for something for a particular dish(e.g. some veal for a blanquette de veau, which i asked for and they had no idea), they scratch their heads. On three occasions I’ve gone in there for beef short-ribs — a very common cut these days. All they can ever offer me is flanken ribs– nice enough meat, but not right for a short-rib recipe– and on top of that, they don’t even know how to cut flanken properly — should be long and flat, as if for a Korean barbecue, not short and lumpy, as f it’s for a beef-cheek recipe. So these days instead, I just go to the excellent Brazilian butchers in Stamford Hill, for all that, where they have enough short ribs to drown a city. Same with pork spare ribs– I was amazed to get home with my ribs and find that they’d left the skin on– they should have skinned it first and popped the skin in the bag for crackling– without asking. The sausages, bacon, chops, and the steak are great– but anyone can do that. Lovely people, and the wine at the back is a nice(if fully-priced!) add-on. But If you’re a serious meatie in this area, and you need a bespoke service, stick to the amazing Baldwins on Green Lanes, or the less amazing Ginger Pig in Vic Park.

How does this place only still have 4 reviews? Lovely butchers, quality products with helpful staff on duty to answer any meaty questions you should have. They also stock meat accessories… sauces, spices, dried meats, condiments and such. It’s not an everyday place for me but the price is worth it for those special occasions.

I really love this butchers. It has a different feel to most butchers you are probably used to. The meat is kept in fridges around the edge of the room and the butchers talk to you about what you want in the centre and then go and fetch what you need. Gone is the big meat counter and instead you get a more intimate experience. The butchers know what they are talking about and are helpful when you aren’t quite sure which cut you need. They also sell wine and can recommend pairings should you wish to go down that route. It is not cheap though but as long as you are prepared to pay top price for top quality you’ll love this place too.

This is a really snazzy butchers on Church street in Stoke Newington. They keep some of their cuts of meat behind glass doors, the meat looks very trendy(hanging up, you know, that style of drying and aging your meat that is quite ‘in’ at the moment). The sausages are all made there, really nice fat ones, good quality(great for bbq!). They also sell wine, cheeses, dried/cured meats etc. Not like the old style butchers, it’s almost like a deli! Recommend checking it out!

Do you like sausages? Do you like chops? Steak? Stinky cheese? Fabulous wines? Traditional British butchers serving you? Here at Meat N16, they have taken the smelly, bloody butchers and sexed it up. Made it acceptable so we don’t have to think about the fact that this tasty lamb chop was once baaaing, bleeting and bouncing around a field. Everything is spotlessly clean and the butchers are clean cut with shiny shoes. The meat is hanging behind a glass sliding doors and at the front window the meat is laid out like an artistic mosaic of cuts. You can tells it’s still a butchers though, the doggies of Stokie can confirm. As they walk past, their leads pull and noses dampen with excitement. They have a small selection of cheese and drinks and at the back they have a great wine room. It’s all set up for tastings so it’ll be great to see what they decide to do events wise over the next few months. There is a large outside space so if they use that, this will be a bit of a foodie mecca. I love the fact that the wine is split up so you can pair it easily with your meats. Pork, lamb, beef or chicken — how cool is that?!
