As a Wisconsin native, I’m pretty big on cheese. Not stinky European cheese, but lovely melty tasty cheese? Can’t go wrong. Morty & Bob’s had been on my radar for some time but as I don’t often find myself in Hackney, I always missed out. But as I had to be in Whitechapel for work from early until 10am on a Saturday, my chance arrived! We went up to Broadway Market first, and strolled through half of it, and then on to the Schoolyard before making our way to Netil Market. I wanted to see all the food on offer before I made my choice, even though grilled cheese was really my destination. That’s not to say there weren’t at least 10 other great choices in the other two markets! Walking by the smells was hard ;) So we got to Netil Market, and it wasn’t quite as buzzing as Broadway and the Schoolyard, but Morty & Bob’s had it’s hatch open and one of the owners, as recognised by the website, waiting in the window. So I approached and… nope. Denied. «It’s too early, you’ll have to come back at 11am». It was 10.49am. No cheese for you! So I figured fine, I’ll go have something else — and we did, a bahn mi. But the cheese… I needed the cheese. So we went back, around noon, for the sandwich. There was a couple in front of me, talking to the worker in the food truck about skiing. They had already ordered, but yet I had to stand there while they all talked about skiing. For like 5 minutes — so not long, sure, but really, take my order, and while it cooks, chat away. Anyway, I digress. I ordered the basic grilled cheese, my name was taken, and I went and sat down. About 5 minutes later, my name was called. It was good. Not great. Definitely not worth my aggravation. It was greasy and a bit hard to eat, as the grease was from the cheese so it was molton hot and dripping everywhere — and the one napkin didn’t cut it. Once I got to the second half of my half(we shared), it had cooled a bit and was easier to eat. Perhaps if I hadn’t been grumpy with the whole situation, it would have been 4 stars. But definitely not a 5, which is a shame.
