I try really hard not to compare my experiences with sushi back home to places in London. But it’s just so easy to dissapoint here. And I made the mistake of trying something unsushi because my friend didn’t want to share sushi plates. Maybe I brought the wrong person. who knows. Anyway ordered a green thai curry ramen… already right there I should have known. It was luke warm pot noodle with not so spicy«green» curry sauce and a few bits of chicken. Really gross, didnlt finish it. To make matters worse we were seated in the empty back dining space that smelled like the toilets. We were across the room from them…

Whilst munching complimentary wasabi peas(yay!) we got in our drinks. Ben wanted to try a shot if barley shochu(which is not unpleasant, but doesn’t really taste of anything) and I had one of Japan’s finest mainstream beers, Kirin Ichiban. Ben is not that hot on Japanese food he’s a bit of a novice with chopsticks and he hates seafood(except squid). As such, he set me the task of ordering the food. I chose myself a small selection of sushi as a starter(what is it that’s so nommy about sushi? I can’t get enough) And for Ben, I ordered tempura squid. Both starters were delicious, and of course, we shared a bit I’d each other’s. Don’t worry a couple of my sushi rolls were fish free, so not an issue for fish phobic Ben. Next up, mains. I treated Ben to a fish of rice topped with deep fried chicken steak and set in an omelette(chicken katsudon). I had a prawn and chicken number, also sitting on a bed of rice(ankake donburi). Both dishes were delicious, in enough sauce whilst not being sloppy. Not too salty either, which I think a lot of Far Eastern food suffers from. The rice was lovely, sticky, fat short-grain sushi rice(and watching Ben try to eat rice with chopsticks is an event that should charge an entry fee. Slowed down his eating though, which can’t be bad). At under £25 a head for two courses, this place comes highly recommended the food was delicious, the service polite(if a little slow) and the restaurant unpretentious. I want to go again!

Cheap and cheerful Japanese food that tastes a lot better that the first impression of the restaurant might have you believe. I’d walked past Oishi many a time on my weekend stroll along Church Street, but because it looked boringly sterile — somewhere half way between takeout and Yo! Sushi — I never bothered to go in. But when they did a deal on Groupon, I decided to give them a shot. I was pleasantly surprised. We were led past the dull entrance area into the back that, while still not the sort of atmosphere that makes you want to spend the evening, is a lot more welcoming. We had a plate of amazingly crispy tempura of perfectly tender squid and a plate of delicate mixed Sashimi and two rice bowls(Domburi) — one with more fish and one with grilled chicken. They were both great examples of the Japanese skill of combining simplicity with great, clean taste. I would probably still opt for the takeout over eating in, but I will definitely be back.

So japanese in stokie is a good thing but me and the lady just got a takeaway delivered and its def in the could do better category. The tempura was good and fresh but the batter was heavy and greasy. The sushi was alright but the fish wasn’t the freshest, especially the mackerel which was unpleasantly fishy. And its not that cheap. Give it a go if you fancy a change but i thought it was pretty average.

Tasty Japanese food in Stokey, hurray! The place is very laid back, menu just what you need and the staff is friendly and helpful. So cute. update 2011_oishikunai :/the agedashi tofu was so so greasy and the simple tuna salad salty to the point of being almost inedible. it completely put me off to try anything else. the weitress was very sweet though, shame the cooking didn’t live up to the service. not sure what happened, but fix that soon please.

I went here for the first time last night and was pleasantly suprised with the quality of food and friendliness of the staff. We had few selection of sushi which were nicely presented and tasty. Saki was great too. Will go again as this place is nice addition to the stokey scene

Wow this place was lovely, even the toilets impressed me! The latest edition to Church Street I decided to try this place for a birthday dinner(yes another one!) and wasn’t disappointed. The happy servers brought our food out quickly, and didn’t rush us. The food was super tasty too, see the piccys for proof! The only thing that stops this place from being a 5 starer is the menu, a little low on selection of the veggies yet whats on there they do good. Also a nice small intimate place making it perfect for a quite meal.
