The Marmalade wheat free cake was nice — and one of the staff. The atmosphere was rather pleasant and actually it was well located. Here are my issues 1. The Staff were passive and unhelpful, after expressing my wheat problem, they said they might have some gluten free bread — but it would be frozen — the proceeded to not check and serve the next customers… I then asked if i could have an alternative option — again to which the staff member was bemused, disinterested and hoped i’d just get a coffee. 2. The selection of food is surprisingly sparse — even if you eat cake/sandwiches.

The Park Café(not far from the Royal Observatory and the General Wolfe statue in Greenwich Park) has been a regular watering hole for some years, supplying teas and coffees, cakes, salads and light snacks to locals and visitors alike. Counter-service mainly, but food orders that need preparation are brought to your table. Run by the Company of Cooks, it is not cheap. Today, for example, I visited with my other half, ordering a Welsh Rarebit and a flatbread pizza, a bottle of beer and a cup of tea, and the bill was £14.80(yikes!). However, the food was pretty good, and the staff were friendly and helpful(we saw one waitress happily returning a football kicked over the garden fence by some teenagers in the main park). I’ve often stopped at the Café for a coffee — which, although machine-brewed, is not bad — and the chocolate cake goes down well with my kids. You can sit indoors(it can get very crowded in the winter — and a new notice on the counter warns parents against bringing baby buggies indoors when it’s busy) or outside in the garden. Be warned though: the outdoor option can mean you are pestered by pigeons and starlings — we saw one woman’s baked potato turned into a pigeon perch by one audacious«flying rat»! (And please, people, don’t encourage the pigeons by feeding them.)
