As far as grocery stores go — Big is Better! This one is BIG… Considering the location it is surprising to find such a big store. They stock a wide variety of ‘everything’ including stationary and electronics.

Two weeks on and I still struggle to find products in this supermarket. Last time I tried to find a hair conditioner and deodorant with my other half and we got lost for ten minutes. Other day looking for ingredients for a cake was a challenge. Plus, they only give you these small baskets, have they thought about pregnant women, old people, carrying a pushchair, etc??? It is really a nightmare walking around once you have 4 products in the basket. Dear Mr Sainsbury’s, please place some of these smaller trolleys inside or some of these baskets with wheels, this not one of your small stores, you know? This is a big one. For the rest, you can find pretty much a bit of everything and the staff is lovely and you have a deli, butcher, fish, bakery… which is great to have so close home.

Huge. Has everything. Good prices. Done deal. For more upmarket stuff head to Waitrose just down the street.

In most older cities, simply having the space for a larger market is a challenge. But every once in a while, developers find a place to carve out something big. This market is big. As in Wal-Mart/Target/Costco big. The veggie section alone is larger than my neighborhood Tesco. As my former girlfriends will testify, bigger isn’t always better. Of course they were talking about their favorite cars. You’ve got to have some quality with that quantity and I’m not about to proclaim that this place does everything great. That said, it’s the first time in a long time that I’ve felt there was a big enough selection that the same foods competed with each other on price. For example, there wasn’t one or two varieties of mushrooms, but a dozen. Some specialty types. Others that were offered in bulk. There wasn’t a couple of potato choices. Again, more like a dozen types in all different sized offerings. On the flip side, you aren’t likely to find a lot fo speciality/gourmet items. This isn’t like the food halls of Harrods or Oxford St. But I’m definitely going to be heading here frequently to stock up on certain basics.

This«big» Sainsbury«homebase» offered me the promise of a one-stop shop ala Walmart or Target, but never seems to have what I need. The«home» section is really quite small, they don’t carry my size printer cartridges, they lack just about everything that I think a housewares section should have. Very basic assortment of some sheets, microwaves, some dvds, etc, so if you’ve got some general needs, sure they’ll help, but if you venture too far into specifics or want any variety, you’re better off going to a specialty store. They’re 24 hours during the week, but close in the evenings on weekends :(
