A very solid bowl of ramen, and I like the ambiance. Packed in tight, but once you’re seated you don’t feel it. The appetisers are reasonable and the only ramen joint I know of that offers a loyalty program! Quality broths all around, good amount and quality of noodles and a warm and cozy Japanese setting.

Obviously recommended by someone that hasn’t tried sushi many times before. In addition, had to wait over an hour in line. The other mains were tasty however the portions were beyond minimalist. Better choices in soho. Interesting décor.

In a desperate 40 minutes prior to movie showing time-crunch, Satsuma saved! Satsuma was full on a Saturday night, but we lucked out and one group was just leaving so we were seated quite quickly. We expressed to the hostess that we were in a bit of a hurry, so she handed us menus while they were cleaning the table so that we could be ready to order upon seating. I ordered one of their lovely looking bento boxes, as I passed by several on the way to being seated. Booths are quite funny, however, as you are seated, you assume the hole in the middle of the wall is a mirror, but quickly realize, «Wait. I’m not a dude. OH! Those are other people!» Like the minimalistic décor to the place. The bento box pleased! The salmon sashimi was lovely, and I’d go back for that alone. Their twist on tempura shrimp is that they are wrapped in tiny, thin noodles and fried, rather than a standard tempura batter, and they were quite tasty! Only one item on my plate failed to be gobbled: a seafood salad with shrimp, scallop, calamari, cucumber, onion, etc. It wasn’t necessarily not good, just not as good as the rest of the compartmentalized options. Also had a bit of my friend’s seaweed salad and would definitely recommend. We were served promptly, service was friendly, and we made it out in time to catch our flick! What more could you ask for in Central on a Saturday in a hurry?

Went with a group of 4. Bento boxes and sushi all around. Decent food. Nice décor, friendly and prompt service. The ultimate test in my mind for a restaurant in a city the size of London is if you would go back based on the numerous options that are available. If in the neighborhood, would think about it, but I tend toward trying new places(how’s that for being obtuse?).

Recommended for sushi in Soho, thus here I ventured! Satsuma offer an impressive range of bento boxes, to my delight not just for lunch but throughout the day along with an a la carte selection of Japanese noodle and rice staples. But it was sushi I came for so sushi I got. No kidding, I think the tuna, avocado rolls were the best I’ve ever had. They were divinely-delectable. The complete melt-in-the-mouth experience. Incredible. Still dreaming… Sashimi was also top notch, and the ebi tempura perfectly crispy. Prices are very reasonable, service friendly and efficient. I’m not sure what I make of the contemporary orange latticed-dining booths, I guess they are funky enough… From reading previous reviews it appears Satsuma is not what it was a couple of years ago… ignorant of it’s previous incarnation(maybe a tangerine?), I was quite pleased with what greeted me for dinner last night.

Satsuma is fantastic, quirky design and yummy food. Not very expensive and a little bit different. If you are in the area definitely give it a try.

I have no idea, why this place needed a remodeling to what used to be a cool space into something less and poorer. All the dynamic sitting on the long tables together with other guests, making us feel shy and awkward, which is equally interesting, has been eliminated with the ugly and cheap looking orange booths. We were no longer displayed to the pedestrians any more. How sad! The owner, the Chinese guy, with his rich family money?, took the wrong advice, turning it into something sour. He should sue himself and the interior designer he listened to. The food menu has changed to something pretentious to what used to be cool, spicier version plates to Wagamama. We sadly swore to ourselves that we would never get back to this place ever again. I am disappointed that one favorite venue in Old Compton Street is GONE without even an ownership change. This is by far the worst do-over I have witnessed. Bad for Satsuma, Not feeling sorry, but, thinking how stupid their misstep was. Perhaps, this will give me a chance to explore other updated Chinese Restaurants nearby.

Not a bad place for some katsu-curry. I thought the pork-katsu was faaar better than the ebi-katsu, but they were both yummy, and filled me up all afternoon! I liked the mad orange décor and my boyfriend said the downstairs is filled with private booths like a Japanese izakaya. However…I’m not sure how many other things I would risk trying here. There were quite a few photos of tempura with curry sauce. I often love fusion food… but I just can’t imagine those two things working well together! The bad parts: * The staff couldn’t tell me what was in a bento box before we ordered. How hard it is to remember meat, rice, salad and a croquette? * Even though there was nobody waiting for a seat, the staff seemed keen to get rid of us. The second either of us finished a drink or a plate, it was whisked away! Maybe this would be a plus if we were in a hurry, but it just seemed rude.

Since the refurbishment and possibly different management the prices are expensive and the portions have halved. So disappointing as this was my favourite place i’d been going to for 2 years ;(

Recently re-opened and covered in Daily Candy, we decided to check it out. Very good value, service and food! Loved the menu selection and we shared a number of dishes from roles, teriyaki, tempura and katsu. Everything was served beautifully and tasted fresh and delicious. For the Soho area, this is a real find and we will be back!

This is what you need to know: it’s apparently a katsu joint now. Although, it has a bunch of other stuff on the menu. While their curry and chicken katsu were a good combination, the fact that the waiter seemed baffled by the request for some tonkatsu sauce to accompany the – you guessed it – tonkatsu was more than a little annoying. Save yourself the trouble and get much better options at Taro up the road.

Satsuma is a relatively cheap and cheery Japanese restaurant that serves decent quality sushi. As some of the other reviewers note, Satsuma stays open later(past 11), so it’s a nice option when the other Japanese restaurants in Soho are closed. Expect to sit at one of several large communal tables which can be a plus or minus depending on your mood and company. Service was exceptionally quick, and as I was there towards the end of the night they gave plenty of warning about last calls for food. Prices are great — most rolls where in the 3 to 5 pound range, and the fish was of much higher quality and standard than a Yo Sushi. I had the salmon skin and peking duck roll, and enjoyed both. The miso soup was solid, but it’s hard to mess up miso soup. The only item that disappointed was the gyoza… they were all stuck together and fell apart when I tried to separate them. That said, this is a very solid 3 star sushi place, and worth giving it a go if you are looking for an inexpensive and quick Japanese meal in Soho.

For some reason sushi joints in this city doesn’t open past 11 at night, even if their posted business hours indicate otherwise. The reason often cited is that the kitchen has run out of fish. As such, I’d like to credit Satsuma for at least managing to stock enough fish(except for tuna) to entertain guests up to 1130 on one Saturday night. The price points are satisfactory since Satsuma follows more of an eat-and-go rather than a proper restaurant format. They have all of the conventional rolls, hand rolls and bento boxes on menu, most of which are below GBP8.00 or so.

This place is super yummy! You walk up to the place and think it’s a tiny restaurant but they have a huge downstairs dining area. The service is great and the food was yummy. I’m not a fan of the shared tables too much but I can get over it. There are cheaper Japanese places but this restaurant is so centrally located. Once you’re done with dinner, you can go shopping or see a show in Soho. I’ll come back.

I think the food in here is good for what it is. It’s not incredible but it’s not a slap in the face either. Last night I had a tempura bento and my friend had a satsuma bento box. Both came with a nice variety of food, all tasted fresh and was all well cooked. It just wasn’t massively impressive. The presentation was simple. I did like the sushi rolls that came with my dinner though and it’s definitely given me the desire to give salmon skin rolls a second chance once again.

Mmm sushi! This place is modern, with good food and quick service. The food isn’t all that expensive but the beverages sure are! Food presentation is lovely. I had the tempura bento and finished everything! My husband had the beef ramen and loved it. I tasted the broth and it was really good! Decent price for a lot of food– £30 for dinner, extra nigiri, extra rice and 2 drinks. Plus, we were in and out in less than 30 mins which was great for us as tourists :)

I love this place and go often as it is authenic Japanese with a huge range of dishes to choose from. I love the sushi in particular the tuna, and salmon rolls. The eel is also to die for with a brilliant range of dishes, or box sets if u want to try a range of dishes. It is reasonable priced; I had tuNa roll, salmon roll, sushi set to share and eel with rice and wine for 60 pounds for 2. It is also in the heart of soho so plenty of places to go afterwards. Sushi is also very good quality and tastes great.

I like Satsuma. It’s a place I like to go when I’m all out of ideas for somewhere new and exciting. It’s like the girl back home that you know despite the fact you may not have seen her for a while, you know deep down she’ll still be keen for a cheeky roll in the hay. With that said it’s an interesting place to dine. My preference is to sit downstairs as you feel rather exposed on on display upstairs. The menu isn’t expansive, but it has a menu that satisfies. What is remarkable is the speed at which the food and drinks arrive at your table. Even when fairly full, the staff are extremely quick and receptive to orders and the odd change of order. It is often said that if you are kept waiting for you food it is a good sign. At Satsuma the food is delivered quicker than a speeding goat. However, I think the food is still pretty respectable considering. I can thoroughly recommend the Chicken Terriyaki Bento Box(12.50) and the Grilled Chicken Steak Set(£7.50). The latter coming with a delicious Miso soup as well. There is also a delicious kiwi and strawberry fruit smoothie which is delicious but a little spenny(£3.50) as its served in the world’s smallest glass. Satsuma doesn’t set the world on fire, but it’s good place to eat with friends if in need of a quick and delicious stop-gap before smashing up Soho. Sexy Rob —

Cheap, cheerful, decent food. We ordered an array of food and it was all nice, but sort of came out too quickly so we had to decide between cold tempura and warm sushi. Overall, it was, as we say back in America, aaaight. Cheap. Decent. TERRIBLE sake, though. Honestly. for £3/bottle they could get something decent like Sho Chiku Bai, and they could seriously up their sake game(and their profit margins) with a short visit by someone who knows their sake.

Satsuma is one of a few fast-ish food restaurant along Wardour Street right in the heart of Soho. It has the canteen style benches upstairs but there are some smaller tables downstairs. The food is Japanese with sushi and bento boxes available. There is a fair choice of rolls and also some nice combinations in the bento boxes. Unfortunately, the portion size isn’t that generous and the price is borderline high, hence the average mark. I think that Japanese food has taken off in the UK and its greater availability, especially in London makes value for money ever more important in the credit crunch. Oh and not a satsuma in sight.
