Great food company drinks crown atmosphere and fun. Not far from the strand either and tourist stuff but yet feels local

Isn’t it mandatory while in London to eat fish and chips? I think so. That would be like going to New York and not having a slice of pizza. My friends and I stumbled upon this place while doing the tourist-thing in London. It was quick service, but the food was great. The fish was already fried and was lightly breaded and crisp. The fillets were huge! You also got a side of thick-cut fries(err, I mean chips) and another side of mashed peas. I didn’t care for the mashed peas because I don’t even like peas when they’re not mashed — but the mashed consistency was just a texture I didn’t care for. The décor in the place was cute — it was homey. The furniture was a hodge-podge of different tables and chairs. Nothing matched, but that was the point. Pictures were hanging on the wall and there was a bookcase full of books. The service was good and all in all — this is a great place to check out while in town.

I lived near here for awhile and this place is continually packed. There’s a constant stream of tourists taking pics of the outside as well as streaming in. Drinks tend to be on the pricier side, service tends to be friendly but slow and most times you are lucky if you can find a seat. All in all, it has a nice pub vibe — plus the added quirkiness of housing a mini-sherlock museum — so worth a go as a tourist for a pint when it’s not overly heaving with people and you happen to be by Embankment. Just down the walkway beside it is the lest touristy, more authentic Ship & Shovel pub that I tend to like just a bit more.

I was skeptic about coming here, tourist spots normally equal bad food… But Sherlock did not disappoint, I had fish and chips, meat pie and the Sherlock Holmes ale. Fish and chips were delicious, try their Sherlock Holmes ale… So good…

We came here as we had a friend who is a Sherlock Holmes fan and wasn’t disappointed from the historical perspective but service was quite hit and miss. We ate in the upstairs restaurant. Ambience: Excellent, captured the feeling of an old London pub inter-mixed with the Sherlock Holmes experience. Service: we noticed a distinct lack of knowledge of the items on the menu. One of the waiters had not idea what a Yorkshire Pudding was, he thought it was dessert. Booking the table and getting served was no problem, resolving issues with our order was a nightmare. We asked what meat they served with their Roast dinner. The waiter told us beef or lamb. Most of us ordered the lamb. However, we came to find out that the lamb was not a roast dinner at all and was mis-lead by the staff member(probably due to lack of knowledge of the menu). When they delivered the food we asked them to fix it as per the agreed order, it took three attempts and lots of frustration to accomplish that. We gave up for a couple of us and decided I would share out other items on my plate with them. When receiving the bill they charged us the wrong price but that staff member fixed that quickly. The food quality was ok but not fantastic. In particular the Yorkshire Pudding didn’t taste very good at all. The other items were ok but nothing we couldn’t have got cheaper at another pub. One of the waiters took some time to detail some history about the artifacts in the pub which was great. One of the waiters spilled red wine over someone in our parties jacket. We were in the restaurant for quite some time, staff didn’t try to move us along, however, we kept ordering throughout the time we were there. Despite the problems I tried to be patient with them but it doesn’t really give me many reasons to go back there again.

Very friendly staff. Super attentive. Good food. Yummy ‘Pumpkin’ burger(vegetarian) and the fish and chips were very tasty. Good selection of beer and for a ‘service at the bar pub’ they checked on us three times at the table during rush hour.

«Try Their Own Sherlock Holmes Ale» Charming pub with a great brew of their own, the Sherlock Holmes Ale. It was packed with people, they were spilling out onto the street, as I became accustomed to seeing in London. It fascinates me that they let people drink in the street kind of far away from the tavern; they don’t allow that where I come from. People were sitting across the street drinking on the steps of another building, there were glasses and bottles in the doorway of this other place and we saw glasses on the opposite street corner, too. So we decided to do the same thing and take our drinks outside and sit across the street. Eventually an employee came out and collected up all the empties from the entire area and returned to the pub. All in all, it’s a great stop for a drink, some old-timey atmosphere, and lively goings-on.

I can only write about the drinks and the atmosphere, as we didn’t try any of the food. We stopped in while waiting on the Ghost Bus Tour(don’t waste your money on THAT!) to have a couple of drinks. The place was packed, and is definitely very touristy. Anyone who’s a fan of Sherlock Holmes will enjoy the place though, as there are lots of kitschy things on the walls and overall the atmosphere is that of a typical London pub. The drinks were good, nice & cold, and service was friendly, so I have no real complaints. The ONLY negative is that once our tour was over, we came back hoping to get something to eat, only to find that they were closing… and although there were still several customers in the place, the bar had closed as well. So if you’re thirsty or hungry after 11:00, you’re out of luck.

(2014 Review). Ordered the Inspector Lestrade’s Favourite Ploughman’s Lunch, expecting it to not be the most stellar lunch meal, but just needed a light meal. Bread was rough and the ham was on par with what you would pick up from your grocery store. My travel partner said the burger was too dry as well. Not going to bash the pub too hard since I did not try any entrees, but was not too impressed with what we ordered. Prices are fair for London though.

I went to The Sherlock about a week ago for a reunion with some friends and I had a really good time. We were able to secure a few tables outside, which really made all of the difference, since it was a beautiful day and the pub inside doesn’t offer a lot of seating for big groups. When I went to find my friends, I roamed the pub/restaurant and the upstairs part offers a little Sherlock exhibition, which seemed pretty cool and unique. We had many pints there and the bar service is excellent — the bartenders were really warm and friendly. We were having such a good time that we decided to stay to eat. I ordered my favorite — the pulled pork burger and I have to say, I was disappointed. I can’t even tell you how many pulled pork burgers I’ve consumed in London and this was the worst of all of them: it didn’t have that sweet flavor to it — it wasn’t bitter but the after taste just seemed off. However, I will say that their apple pie dessert is totally worth ordering — it was delightful! I would come back here again given its very central location(between Charing cross and Embankment) and the friendly service. I just might order something else to eat.

A very charming«typical» London pub that’s a must for any visitor with even a vague admiration for Sir Doyle’s immortal detective. Lots of kitsch interior details(like the head of the Hound) as well as gorgeous etched windows and decorated exterior. The upstairs is apparently made out just like Holmes’ living room but I didn’t check it out as we were in a bit of a hurry. Also had super friendly staff in a city where customer service isn’t a priority. The food was just so-so — I got a Scotch egg and chips and my friend tried the steak and ale pie, both with imported bottled cider(no local cider options from what I could tell). The sticky toffee pudding was the best I’ve had, though. It’s just a short walk south from Trafalgar Square.

OK Sherlock fans — although this place is pretty touristy, you must go. Try to go in the afternoon where you have it to yourself, nice and quiet and time to look at all the memorabilia. Formerly the Northumberland Hotel, it is now conveniently known as the Sherlock Holmes Pub. There’s some pretty neat memorabilia about, and I loved the homage to Benedict Cumberbatch’s BBC Sherlock on the menu. We didn’t eat but we had a half of the Sherlock Ale and a half of the Watson’s Wallop. We are real ale snobs so I’ll say right now that they weren’t the greatest beers ever, but if you’re used to drinking North American swill these will still be a treat. If you’re here, I have another little tip for you to see something close by if you are a fan of the BBC Sherlock series. Backtrack to Great Scotland Yard which runs between Whitehall and Northumberland Avenue. Take note of the building at #55 Whitehall which houses the Department of Energy and Climate Change, as it’s got two very interesting Sherlock connections. In the BBC series, the rooftop served as a filming location for the final episode in Series 2 «The Reichenbach Fall». The scene is set on top of St Bartholomew’s Hospital(the shots from the ground were filmed there) however the scene ON the rooftop with Moriarty and Sherlock was actually filmed on top of this building, a mile and a half away. James Bond fans will also recognize this same location used in «Skyfall». When walking down Great Scotland Yard, take note of the blue plaque on the side of the building, as this was also the original location of Scotland Yard — this would have existed during the time of the very first Sherlock Holmes stories before it was moved closer to the Thames in 1890.

It kind of saddens me that the museum at 221B Baker Street has received such bad reviews from fans of Doyle’s stories. I had really been looking forward to spending some time there, but after reading several not-so-glowing reviews, I revised our plans. I had no desire to spend hours in line just to see some haphazard displays with no reference to the author himself(at least, that’s the impression I got after reading the most recent reviews). So, instead, we headed to The Sherlock Holmes. It intrigued me for being a restaurant AND a quasi-museum, which allowed us to kill two birds with one stone. The bottom level is the bar — you grab a table, sidle up to the bar to place your order, then sit back and let them serve you. If, however, you’re interested in table-service, and curious about the diorama that they have set up, head up the stairs in the back. On the way up, you’ll pass by a small rooftop terrace before finding the dining room at the top level. They were fairly busy the day we went, and all the tables in front of the glass enclosure around the diorama were taken, but we still had a view of it from where we were. The food menu has items named after stories or characters from Holmes’ world. It’s a little kitschy, but that’s fine. I ended up with the Hound of Baskervilles Toad in the Hole, which is basically a huge serving of Yorkshire pudding with a helping of champ and sausages inside, all floating in a vat of gravy. My husband went with the Retired Colourman’s Fish & Chips. It took a bit longer for the food to be delivered, which wasn’t exactly surprising, given the number of people in the restaurant, but I do still think that our waitress was a little too over-burdened. The food was pretty good, though. There was way too much on my plate to finish — all that champ and sausage fills a girl up — and even my husband had a hard time finishing off his fish and chips. While we were finishing our meals, one of the tables blocking the diorama got up and left, so I took advantage of the empty table to crawl over there and take some pictures. I think they did a good job of incorporating a lot of Holmes elements into one scene, without going overboard. True, most of the things within the display are references that you’ll only get if you’ve read the stories, but it’s still interesting to look at, if you don’t know them(according to my husband, at least). At any rate, the food was decent, and the diorama was fun, but the service needs some help. Oh, and I don’t think the«mood» of the restaurant was helped any by the 80’s American pop music being played inside, but that’s just me.

I pass this pub every day on the way to/from work. From the outside, Sherlock Holmes is warm and inviting. Clad in black paint and gold lettering and with ample crowds dotting the adjoining alley, it looks like a place a friendly-enough place. Once inside though, the service is egregiously slow and unfriendly, and the beer(including the namesakes) are just okay. I won’t be back. It’s not horrible, but there are just too many better places in London.

Walked by this place just casually exploring the city, so glad I did! I wasn’t expecting to go back later that night for dinner! If you love sherlock like I do, this is your place. I wasn’t in London long and didn’t get to see Baker Street, so this was cool enough! My friend and I walked in and the downstairs bar was packed! THATSOKAY! They have seating upstairs people! We almost left defeated, but my friend luckily saw the stairs! Plenty of room up there– we made it early and were seated immediately wheeew ;) The food. Oh the food. I wasn’t expecting to have one of my favorite and most memorable meals at some random place we picked off the street! I was thinking three star food? No no. Ordered the fish and chips, prosecco, and the apple pie. Best apple pie I’ve ever had– I think they used green apples because the tartness was not common! It was a sour and sweet taste, amazing. Never had mashed peas before and I hate peas. These tasted like mashed potatoes haha! I actually liked them! The fish wasn’t oily or greasy, just the perfect layer of batter! Fries are hard to screw up, and luckily they weren’t! The service was great, prices way fair, and the décor so sleuthy! There is memorabilia everywhere, and the menu is even themed. Can’t get much better than that :)

I was never really a big fan of Sherlock Holmes until the Guy Ritchie film made me want to read the books wherein I discovered that Holmes of a cocaine addict. At that point I said to myself ‘now this is one really detective’. So, when I was wondering down Northumberland Rd to go and by my tickets to Spam-a-lot I came across this pub, and marked it as a must visit on my way back. However, before I went inside I decided to try and get a photo of myself standing out the front, with great difficulty. That is until this lovely French woman stepped outside for a smoke and offered to take the photo for me. That one little event has left this pub sitting in my memory ever since, and since I have a photo of it, I felt that I should throw my thoughts up here. Yes, it was a cool pub, excepting the fact that when I visited it it was so crowded I couldn’t even make my way to the otherside(during which I ended up losing my French friend). However, I did stay around long enough to have a pint(squashed among the rest of the patrons mind you) and to admire all of the Sherlock Holmes memorabilia scattered around. However, I am a little surprised that it isn’t closer to Baker Street, but if it was, I would never have found it.

This is a classic London boozer. I didn’t really expect too much of it, so was pleasantly surprised to arrive to the beautiful smell of Christmas aka mulled wine. We only went as part of our homemade Sherlock Holmes walking your. This pub is a classic tourist pub… Memorabilia on the walls and a replica of Holmes’ study upstairs. There’s a door on the side of the pub so fans can sneak in quickly take a few snaps of the study and leave without disturbing paying customers. We thought we’d grab a quick bite to eat whilst there. I wish we hadn’t… The food wasn’t good. Drinks were slightly over expensive too, but we knew what we were in store for. The classic London pub atmosphere and Sherlock stuff balances out the negative points.

Great venue in central London that has lots of Sherlock memorabilia inside, they even sell some at the ground bar. Upstairs there is a restaurant where you can reserve a table. As you go up you will see various Sherlock things, including a little section separated off being Sherlock’s office. We went for Sunday lunch, which was priced at around £10. The portion was a reasonable size and the food was pretty tasty. My only complaint would be that they burnt the yorkshire pudding. Following this I had an apple and rhubarb pie with ice cream(not a big fan of custard) which was also very delicious. Not bad for a central london pub.
