In this day and age of digital photography, most of us have next to no need to go anywhere near specialist shops for developing pictures unless you want, well, something special! Snappy Snaps in Balham is a franchise of a large chain of picture developing, cash hoovering establishments that seems designed purely to entice the not so knowledgeable shopper out of their hard-earned readies. They do what they say on the tin — develop pictures, sell memory cards, picture frames, etc, etc. They also have those ‘special’ products that give the shop that professional aura: — Printing on canvas — Printing large scale images — Mugs(very appropriate for their target market by all appearances!) — Printing on just about anything. The issue I have with Snappy Snaps is that the majority of customers will require their simple printing services which can be processed over the road in Boots for substantially less mazooma. As a point of fact, I don’t think there is anything Snappy Snaps do that doesn’t cost far less elsewhere… I got started on my Snappy Snaps quest when looking for two things: a new memory card for a new camera at short notice and then I wanted to blow up a lovely picture from the aforesaid new camera onto canvas. Needless to say, my visit to Snappy Snaps was brief, involved coughing heartily at the prices quoted and laughing my way out of the door! I’m possibly presuming a lot here — I saved over £30 buying a memory card from Amazon and well over £120(and a much bigger size) buying a printed canvas from an online specialist after an extensive three minute Google search and comparison — but I get the feeling Snappy Snap-up-the-contents-of your-wallet are deliberately looking for those that are less than au fait with the digital world we live in. My mum, for example(who has only recently received my old digital camera) would stroll in, ask for assistance and would be charged way more than she should be for simple services and would no doubt be tempted onto things like a blown up portrait of my niece. Because she doesn’t know better and wouldn’t know where else to go. I fully understand that hey, it’s just business but I don’t have to like it!
