I had always loved Space NK although recently it is losing it’s cutting edge for original presentation and unusual beauty lines. Popped in a month ago and spotted two gorgeous Shu Uemura eye shadows. Assistant asked if she could help then when I requested two eye shadows I was curtly informed that the items were not for sale. Querying the display I was told that it shouldn’t have been out and she had no idea when the colours I wanted would arrive. I was unimpressed by this lacksadaisial attitude. Worse followed when an assistant tried to sell me a home laser which supposedly«removed invisible solar damage,(brown age spots) and fine lines». He demonstrated the gadget on my hand where I have a brown spot but failed to demonstrate how this could be lightened or improved and for several hundred pounds I was unconvinced by the evasive manner in which my questions were dismissed.

Situated in what an ex-colleague of mine used to dub Forgotten Anniversary Boulevard, the Canary Wharf Space NK outlet is situated close to the bottom of the Tesco exit escalators down from the DLR, and next to an equally compact White Company outlet. Reknowned for high end and luxury cosmetics and perfumery, popular brands include Kiehl’s, Aqua di Parma, and Diptyque — I used to buy a lot of the candles. Best purchases tend to be Space NK own brand products. I’m still ekeing out a two year old eyebrow pencil, which is remarkably good quality. Staff are slightly perfect and forbidding in that mildly botoxed and faultless way, but happy enough to help and advise.

I do have a weakness for expensive beauty products and cosmetics, and probably only indulge at Space NK three or four times a year when my budget allows me to upgrade from my economy class Superdrug shop. The store is almost clinically pristine which of course you would expect from this type of high end cosmetics shop but nevertheless, the sleek and shiny décor strikes me every time. With brands such as Laura Mercier, Chantecaille, Nude and my favourite skincare brand Natura Bisse(a recent addition), it has ever thing you will need to feel gloriously pampered and beautiful. It is always very quiet noise-wise in the store and despite always being busy with customers, I don’t think people feel they can talk! I also feel slightly self conscious trying on any of the products to test the shades, fearing that I may make a mess or that one of the staff will disapprove. They generally don’t, but on occasions I have been pounced on by them which put me off browsing. They do know their stuff though, which when you are investing a significant chunk of your heard earned cash on the goodies, it is helpful to know exactly what you are buying and the benefits the product has. The range is fantastic and it is also good for hair products. The general packaging when you purchase is also attractive which makes it feel even more special.
