Syd’s Coffee Stall Hillary Caterers

An East End landmark since the end of the First World War, it was originated by Sydney Edward Tothill (Syd), and has been in the same position and run by the family ever since. The business later expanded into ‘Hillary’ Caterers, this name commemorating Sir Edmund Hillary.
The stall serves nice strong milky tea in proper cups and my favourite… Peter’s meat pies served upside down on a plate with a lashing of brown sauce. I usually have two on the same plate plus at least one cheese roll. The stall does a basic selection of sandwiches and rolls., eg., the 90p. cheese roll is a lump of mousetrap in what has to be said is not usually the best quality roll which can often be somewhat stale. But no matter… when its dunked in the hot tea it becomes a delight to the palate, especially when alternated with a forkfull of Peter’s pie. The stall is a mecca for taxi drivers, but watch out for the traffic wardens if you’ve parked up to sample this ancient London wonder.
