I thought the space was nice. While it is a video bar, there is ample seating which allows for good conversation. Drink prices were good(at least on the night I went) and the bartenders are HOT. What else can you ask for?

Video bars. What is the point? We all know, or at least we should, to turn off the TV when friends come round for dinner but this place have TVs everywhere — even on the bar embedded into the beer pumps. TV’s KILL conversation, big time. And this place lacks atmosphere because of it. On a Friday night while the DJ is playing cheesy classics and the place is reasonably crowded, the dance floor remains empty apart from one or two brave(drunken) souls. It’s OK for a drink but not for a night out. Jump on the 38 and go to Dalston Superstore instead.

I know this type of bar appeals to some people, so I’m going to be forgiving. I kind of almost want to give them two stars because I try to avoid being pulled into here, but I still cave in, so what does that say about me I guess? Well, for starters, didn’t this place used to be a lot more chill before the Edge people bought them out? Now there’s video monitors in the beer taps and the prices went up. I think they’re deliberately trying to bring a bit of soho to Upper street, but I think the part that I like about soho is the fact that it’s in soho and I can stay on Upper street when I don’t feel like going to a generic video-bar. *oh no he didn’t !! Yes… Yes, I did. Meh…

I suspect I’m going to be in a minority here: I’m not a great fan of gay bars generally, being a proper pub sort of person, so having to go here for an event recently was always going to risk a degree of disappointment. The interior is very designer conscious, and seems clean and tidy, if a little clinical. As Char-lotte says, the bar effectively divides the place into two, with the main seating area beyond. The toilets are located down some very steep stairs — must be interesting to traverse after you’ve had a pint or two. Bar staff were helpful and friendly, but not that efficient: order a coffee and it seems to take forever, as they have to disappear — they were gone so long it felt like they were having to grow the beans first. Why not install an espresso machine at the bar? Unsurprisingly, there was no decent beer — only keg lagers and bitters. The food was very average indeed — and included a wonderful throw-back to the ‘70s of white bread plain cheese sandwiches, which had slightly dried up. This seemed as far removed from the surroundings as it was possible to get. So, overall, just not my cup of tea(or coffee).

The Green is the more ‘upscale’ gay bar in Angel… which actually isn’t saying much, considering both the lack of quantity and quality of the others… but it was okay on a Saturday night when we wanted to go a bit dressier than our regular olé’ dive, but not enough to get it ON and head to Soho. The drinks were quite overpriced ad under-measured, even if my friend got half off the first round. It was quite busy about 10 pm, and the lighting was in funky shades of red, blue and purple. The crowd was pretty mixed, as usual more men than women, but mixed in terms of preppy gays, emo gays, macho/butch geys, etc. I would go back here but it’s for sure not a starter place because you’ll go broke before getting out the door!

It’s surprising, considering how many gay men and women live in Islington and Angel, how few gay bars there are and this really is the only one that I’d rate at all. This long yet narrow bar is beautifully designed and has a great range of cocktails with probably the best Mojito maker in London. Love him! Credit also to their bar menu which is just too tempting to resist, especially the peach quesadilla which was divine. Not bothered by it’s limited size the bar has many nights of entertainment from singing along with musical numbers, which I personally would rather die than hear again, to DJ’s and drag hosts. Proof that in the end you Don’t need lots of gay bars as long as you’ve one good one.

I’ve never actually had a drink at the Green. I came to this pub to actually have a cup of tea on a cold afternoon(I never drink during the day). As a café, in the afternoon, The Green was very nice and brightly lit and modern. I had a look at some of the free magazines and sat near the window overlooking the street. I’ve never seen this pub look particularly busy but I will say it has a good atmosphere, unlike many Gay pubs in the city. It is very cosmopolitan. I’d like to come here and have a drink or some food the next time I come. The food menu is expensive, expect to pay over 8 pounds for a full English but at the Green it’s really about style.

I very mixed feelings about this bar. The first time I went the music was too loud, there is no dance floor so I didn’t understand why there a was a need to have the volume blasting into your ears and out of your feet. Never coming back! Well, never say never. Came back and things seemed to have changed it was more chilled out, I could have a nice relaxing conversation with my friends have a couple of pints(£3.50) and not be bumped into every second of the night. Then again it was not a busy night, tuesday. Contemporary interiors and my favourite bit, colour changing lights, mood altering effect! Oh! it is a gay bar, apparently.
