Impressed by the size of this place after passing it by so many times and dismissing it as a bit shabby-looking. It’s got something between a beer patio and a beer garden at the back — probably one of the best reasons to go here. On the Friday night when I went, there was a somehow inappropriately-placed DJ who was encouraging some pretty cringey dancing, which before long encroached upon where my friends and I were sitting. Apparently, reckless dancing trumps a quiet pint, so we had to move our chairs out of the way. I think it’s good to have The Railway, but there’s something slightly wrong about this place.

Mixed bag with this place. They’ve done the place up a bit in the last couple of years without getting too trendy. A real mixed crowd of locals and younger groups which is good. The back garden is huge. It’s just the attention to details which let it down. The food is a bit stodgey and uninspiring. The barman/landlord a bit surly and unhelpful. The football channel was turned to Albanian TV(!) so he wouldn’t change it and had the sound off even though lots of people were watching. Could be a real gem in an area with a lack of good pubs.

The railway kitchen is def worth a visit when in Tulse Hill, up the road from Brixton. It’s everything to everyone. A lively bar some evenings of the week with a very quirky quiz night Thurs. It hosts jam/openmic nights for the Laker collectives, and has bands playing Friday’s and Saturdays. The Bones Theatre recently put on The Undercrown, and a poetry club meets once a month. It’s a great eatery every day of the week, with light lunches, and grat bar snax. Sunday roasts are famed, made with organic meat. There’s a very large patio n the back, with separate bar/barby area for the summer. Family’s are made very welcome. The Clarke boys and Ozzie(manager) will make you very welcome if you decide to check it out.
