Lovely pub with nice atmosphere! I really like coming to this place when I don’t have anything to do or if I’m planning to watch a football or rugby match. The staff is very nice, they have 2 terraces where you can have something to drink or eat and loads of TVs to watch the sports. They also have live music with indie bands who play during some weekends(but not all of them, check the schedule!). Food is also really good. They have some snacks like chicken nuggets, sweet fried potatoes and then hamburgers, meat or salads. You can also pop over during Sunday’s because they have an amazing Sunday roast!

I like the Railway tavern for several reasons. I came here for Sunday lunch after the this and Tulse Hill Hotel were closed/stopped serving food… At 8.30pm on a Sunday. Their loss. Tavern is great for many reasons as you’ll read in other reviews. Cool conservatory style outside seating little outside huts, table tennis. Nice bunch of people/regulars. We went on open mic night which was great and sitting outside in the conservatory(which sound cold but isn’t!) meant it didn’t really disturb us. The food was great, although a little on the Luke warm side which was a shame. The staff were great, funny and interactive. The only weird thing really was that one of the group members went up to the bar to order. They said its table service and wouldn’t take the order. Well… No one came to the table, until we had to call them and then they never really came back. I think they’d be better suited just sticking to the pub tradition of goof up to the bar to order. Seemed very bizarre to offer table service… But not really offer it properly.

This place doesn’t look like much from the outside — just your average pub, but step inside, go through all the way to the back and you’ll realize it’s so much more. Almost turns into a club at night on popular nights! Great place to hang out if you’re in the area.

Nice space — lots of room, loads of tables, and really cool atmosphere. And not in the«too cool for school» way — it was a friendly, laid back kind of place. Unfortunately, the food was just not up to scratch. While my cheddar and bacon burger was large, it was dry and crumbly — massively overcooked. I asked if I could get it on the rare side of medium and it came so cooked it was falling apart. Lame. The potato wedges were good, but nothing particularly special. The servers were friendly and accommodating of the large group I was with. The vibe and space were great, but I wouldn’t go for dinner. At 10.50GBP it was a pretty pricey bad burger. I’d give them another shot, but as I’m a Northeast London girl, they’re a bit out of my way unless I’m in the Brixton area for something specific.

Halfway through Saturday, my weekend plans took a sudden change in direction meaning I would soon, for the first time, be spending time in my other half’s neck of the woods. He’s generally modest to the point of self-sabotage but he was quite enthusiastic about us having Sunday brunch here. He proudly deemed it his local. So I knew it was going to be good. It’s dark inside, black walls and dark floors. We found ourselves a corner with a table underneath the warm glow of some funfair-style lighting. The art on the walls is interesting and buyable(if you have a few hundred quid spare) but a nice change from the psuedo-arty music poster prints or graffiti art I’m used to seeing in pubs. Good sized brunch menu, the pricing was a little out of date but I can let that slide as it’s clearly a well run independent with bags of character. Eggs benedict came out perfectly prepared, the hollandaise had enough edge to assure me it didn’t come out of a packet. There’s a huge outdoor area which apparently comes alive in summer with live music and games. Much of it is tented over at the moment, and well warmed by space heaters, lots of space for kids to run around without getting under your feet if you’re trying to enjoy your meal in peace. Evidently a lot of attention has been paid to creating the best customer experience, no sily marketing gimmicks, dead-eyed corporate sponsorship or cheap tricks. It’s a genuinely pleasant place to be on a Sunday afternoon, not too busy and not too quiet. Democratic enough to have the old man doing the crossword on the table across from us, a big table of lads behind us, and a big family gathering seated outside. Really looking forward to coming back here when the weather gets nicer so we can sit outdoors, make the most of the table tennis setup and enjoy some music!

Our autopilot was taking us through Brockwell Park, and towards Herne Hill — no doubt we’d have ended up at The Florence without even knowing it, but something changed in the wind, and we decided to keep walking and scope out Tulse Hill — see what the deal is. Well, Herne Hill it is not. The Unilocal app informed me there were three pubs in Tulse Hill. Walking past the first two, we were a little dismayed, we longed for our brewed-on-site ales The Florence. Why had we spurned Herne Hill? Silly boys. But then we were saved. The Railway Tavern, next to the station no less, with its arty sign and black paint job suggested it might just be ok! I peered through the window and saw young people, families and overly good-looking bar staff. Not a wasted trip after-all! Big fan of this pub. HUGE garden, which is actually mostly covered, an outside bar, ping pong table, pool table, and decent ale on tap too. From the number of ‘reserved’ signs being put out as we left, I’d suggest we aren’t the only ones to know about this place. Definitely a 4-star pub, but it gets an extra one for apparently being the only decent pub in the area.

Went for the first time on Friday and they were playing some great music — 2 fantastic DJs playing ska, skiffle and reggae. The volume was just right, loud enough to hear the music properly, but not so loud you couldn’t have a conversation. Great atmosphere, comfortable too — will be going there regularly from now on.
