Come here if you want to stand at an almost empty bar for 20 minutes being ignored by bar staff with faces like slapped cats. The beer is suspiciously tasteless, the food is shit but the service is even shitter. Got the distinct impression that the staff here wanted all their(quiet, well-behaved Sunday afternoon) customers to fuck off and die. ‘Tis a shame because the bar is spacious and well-designed with a big projector for sports.

We had the roast beef with all the trimmings. It’s was yummy and a very large portion. The gravy on it was delicious! One waitress was a bit rude, she was a bit mad at us for seating ourselves, but there was no indication not to and we saw everyone else seat themselves so I kind of feel like we didn’t do anything wrong. But the gentleman server was extremely nice and helpful. And we very much enjoyed our meal!

Tommyfield is one of a chain of pubs run by Three Cheers(previously the Renaissance pubs) Went for a team lunch in a group of 10. Service was nice and swift, one item was incorrect but was quickly replaced with the correct dish. My pulled pork sandwich was fab, with the pulled pork beautifully moist, and some crisp hand cut chips alongside. A good venue for a nice lunch

Nice place indeed. Friendly service, good menu options. I had the pork croquettes with piccalilli(pulled pork in breading basically), and the rabbit and leak pie. Nice food, great fries… very important. When you arrive at your table, they get you a bottle of water and glasses without asking, which I love.

Drinks were fine. Food was terrible. The service was appalling. When asked if we could have our burgers rare we were told by the waitress they didn’t do rare, minimum medium. They could do a steak rare, but not the burger(!) — normally a sign of either pre-bought beef mince or mince of questionable quality. I said fine I’ll have it medium. 3 minutes later the arrogant so-called manager comes over and said he would like to explain the way the kitchen works. I said no fine, I’ll just have my burger. But he insisted on educating me on why burgers could never ever be served rare. Anywhere. «Enlighten me». «Because burgers are always pre-cooked». I said I never heard that before(because it’s bollocks) and he said that that was obvious«because I’ve been in this business longer than you have». Cue anger. I said to just give me the burger and leave me alone. He insisted on educating me more. «It’s unhealthy to have anything rare and proper restaurants don’t serve anything rare because it’s unhealthy». Right(that’s why we could have a steak rare — they’re not a proper restaurant???). We should have left at this point but decided to stay. Starters came and they were bland. Burger arrived served with«tomato salsa» which was obviously from a jar, probably Dorito’s. The burger was average and the bun was shop bought. Dessert were very mediocre — the caramel sauce with the sticky toffee pudding was either burnt or shop bought and overly sweet, the vanilla ice cream was definitely shop bought. Also, I didn’t see anyone else in the place finish their food. I know it’s a pub and it’s pub food but I can at least name 20 other pubs where I can have a very good meal and friendly service. This place is a waste of space and the so-called manager should not be allowed to work in the hospitality industry. At least work at a couple of decent places before you start educating your paying customers about stuff you don’t know anything about. Avoid like the plague.

Stayed nearby in Kennington while in London for a few days. Our innkeeper recommended the Tommyfield to us as a place for good fish and chips. We weren’t disappointed. A nice gastro-pub layout, fairly child-friendly(we had DD in tow). Had the fish and chips and the boar burger – all very tasty. Good cask-conditioned ales as well.

Not the greatest atmosphere here, although that might have something to do with the fact that I don’t think the locals were none too keen when a noisy(but ultimately) harmless group of us turned up. The beer was delicious. A golden beer called Cavelier from Two Cocks Brewery(chuckles). You saw me enjoying two cocks at the weekend? Yes you did, that was me.

This place is a little gem in kennington, it certainly doesnt look like your run of the mill pub from the outside or inside. If you have seen my review on The Avalon in Clapham you will know i was really impressed, well this bar belongs to the same family. They served up some very tasty nibbles, a cone filled with deep fried Halloumi and chips(had a me a little confused as i thougt it was fish and chips lol), after there were these cute little burgers which were excellent quality real gourmet patties. There were some platters of cheese on toast and cones of fish and chips and finally slices of sausage roll(which were more sausage plait size). The staff were friendly and very quick. I looked at some of the meals on the way out that others were eating and they looked lovely and smelt great. I think this is a definete must if you happen to be in the area to stop in for good food and a drink. A true gourmets delight

I’m not going to comment on the Battle of the Sexes. I think far too much has been said of that event already. And, besides, this review is meant to focus on the venue, so focus, I will. I’ve never been to Kennington before this event. I didn’t really know what to expect, but walking past the little park where people were chilling out and playing boules was certainly a nice introduction to the area. The Tommyfield itself was really cool. It was certainly far bigger than I expected. I don’t really know about the main drinking area, but the upstairs private room was nice, bright and big. There was a nicely-staffed bar with friendly service staff and decently strong drinks. The nibbles provided — mini-burgers, fish & chips, etc. — were really good as well. I’ll admit that seeing as it’s been a few weeks since I visited the Tommyfield, I can’t really remember what else caught my attention, so I’ll just end off by noting that the ladies’ restrooms were nice and clean. I’m sorry. It’s been a while, and I drank quite a few!

I was lucky enough to attend the Qype Battle of the Sexes event here and was really pleased with everything(besides the corruption of the male judge… cough, cough). The Tommyfield fits the comfortable and nice standards of all the other Renaissance Pubs in décor and food, with better service than I’ve received at others. Fried Halloumi and chips was greasy cheesy heaven and better than the fish n chips. Enormous sausage roll adaptation was quite tasty and fun, and the mini-burgers were pretty good, too. I regrettable skipped out on the cheese on toast, which everyone else seems to rave about(shucks)! The private room was really lovely and great for big groups with its own little bar, but unforts no balcony access. Am definitely keen to go back and check out the restaurant in full.

Really great venue this is… Attended the Qype Battle of the Sexes and had a great time. I must say that it really wasn’t so much of a battle, and the judges kept helping the girls team, but hey it was all fun n games. Blokes still won! TBH that was a lie, the judges were FAIR… The bar itself is definately worth a visit, the food that was served was delic’. Mini burgers n mini fish n chips and they were very tasty indeed, but even the the fine foods and great drinks that were on offer weren’t enough to take the bitterness from the losing side! I visited The Tommyfield last night for the #Qypebattle of the sexes. The girls might have lost(just!) but the pub itself was full of win. The battle took place upstairs in the master room, an intimate, contemporary room with a rustic charm. The bar staff were friendly and served us quickly — always a good thing. The food later in the night was adorable, with mini pizzas, cones of fish and chips(really yummy fish actually) and mini burgers on the menu. Mini food always wins points(you can eat twice as much as it’s bitesize, right?). Overall, I’d definitely consider going to The Tommyfield again, particularly as I’m a Tastecard holder so it’s 50% off.

The Tommyfield hosted an excellent Qype birthday event for a number of Qypers in their upstairs Master Room last night, which showed what a great venue this space can be. Billed as The Battle of The Sexes, about forty people were comfortably catered for in a somewhat regal setting. There is a small bar with efficient and helpful bar staff. The catering we sampled could be described as bar snacks — it was certainly tasty indicating that the food from the main menu would also be worth a try. As with all venues it is the hosts who actually make for a memorable event. Last night The Tommyfield staff played their part along with Qype to host a great evening — it certainly worth considering as a venue if you want to organise an event for yourself.

Last night I headed on down to the Qype boys vs girls quiz at The Tommyfield. I was expecting a traditional pub quiz(How many strings on a Oud, 1974FA cup winners etc.) however it seemed a lot more like the last day of term in a failing, boozy school. Which was much better. Quite how the staff managed to remain professional as the upstairs Master Room played host to insult hurling, pint downing, chilli eating make up applying challenges was a mystery, but they did — serving up drinks fast and friedly as could be. Drinks on offer were the usual suspects for a better than average pub-with-food — but they do have a special treat behind the bar — Sipsmith Vodka — amazing stuff — any pub that stocks anything made by Sipsmith gets a big copper– stilled thumbs up from me. We were treated to some ace, and very British mini canapés(fish and chips, sausage roll slices, cheese on toast etc.) that I wolfed down at a frantic pace — lovely to have some ‘proper food’ canapés rather than salmon puffs that are made from air and fish odour and nothing more, that you usually get. So I’d imagine the food here would be served in slabs, designed to punch you with flavour and leave you feeling full. Perfect for pub. So, a great big spacious pub with big food and great drinks, staffed by people who don’t mind you shouting about celebrities having their way with family members and downing pints.

I visited yesterday the Tommyfield to attend the funny Qype Birthday Event: Battle of the Sexes. It was held in the upstairs private room, which has its own bar and lots of space, chairs and some armchairs and couches. The staff was really friendly and patient, given that we were very loud and were doing very strange things(like putting make up on people and make them to do the catwalk, shouting«cat», «cupcake», «police car» or «cup of tea» as part of the memory game or feeding 2 random people with chillies). It’s a lovely place to host a private party. We got to try some tasty nibbles along with the drinks at the bar. I really liked the fried Halloumi(which I totally mistook for fish!) and the sausage roll. The mini hamburgers were very nice as well. But since I was the luckiest person that night and I won a 3-course meal for 2 people, I will update my review as soon as I get to enjoy my prize! But it the food in the menu is as good as the nibbles, I think the 5 stars will still be right.

Having to stay a few nights in the Kennington neighborhood, we were rather disappointed in the lack of restaurant options in our vicinity. We did notice a few pubs, so one dismal rainy day we popped in to The Tommyfield for a dinner and drinks, Straight away we really liked the layout, nice long windows with tables set up along an elevated platform, with more communal tables in the middle. The beers on tap included some local cask ales that the barstaff was more than happy to describe and pour samples, and proved so much more satisfying than your typical tasteless lagers. We both had pie, myself the shepherds pie and my girl the biryani, and each one was rich, tasty, ample in size and stuck to our insides comfortingly as we relaxed with our brews to read a newspaper and take in the patrons. Recommended! Especially for Kennington, where there ought to have tumbleweeds blowing through.

On a rainy Sunday, we happened to find ourselves in Kennington looking for a pie. We found two and a nice pub with great atmosphere, good beer, and delicious food. Tables weren’t available right away, but a very short wait at the bar got a couple samples of the pulled(house-crafted?) beers. We went for the darker, bitter, which is some of the best beer I’ve had here in London. Gosh, I wish I remembered the name of it! The pub has lots of neat levels and different options for seating, and we lucked out with a spot where we could see everything. We snuggled in with our beers and some newspapers, watching the rain out the window and taking in all the people around us — young, old, a birthday party, a girly afternoon get together. Really nice, mixed crowd. The food cured my pie craving — at least for awhile. I had the biryani pie which I thought might be dry, but wasn’t, and my dining partner had the shepard’s pie. His was incredibly meaty and juicy. They use local, sustainable meats, and judging from the taste, they’re quality. Portions were huge, by the way, and I don’t think we’ll eat anything else for the rest of the day. We decided we wanted to stay awhile and ordered a dessert to share. With our teeth still aching from our last bout with sticky toffee pudding, we opted for the apple and berry crumble on recommendation from the server, and it was terrific. The perfect little portion with a side of ice cream. The dessert was more tart than sweet, which was exactly what we wanted. All in all, a great place. It’s a little pricey, but if you linger long enough and take it all in, it’s well worth it.
