A nice venue with a good amount of well-placed seating and a good atmosphere for a fringe theatre. My only slight criticism is that queueing on the stairs to go in wasn’t great — while I was fine, I felt for the elderly gentleman behind me who was finding it difficult to balance and was stuck in a queue. But other than that slight organisational point, great little theatre.

A Pub. A Theatre. *Swoon* Upstairs of the Gatehouse is a beautiful Fringe Theatre providing class and culture to the wetherspoons owned pub down below. I recently went to see London’s first Fringe production of Avenue Q. As a seasoned theatre goer I was excited to experience somewhere new. I love small and quirky spaces. The actual theatre space us up a flight of steps and in a big purple studio. There appeared to be a hidden balcony area for all the band and tech to do their thing. While there were a few technical issues, but as it was the second night, I can imagine that’s all ironed out. The Theatre itself has an in-house company, Ovation which puts on several shows every year. This is great because it sets a standard, rather than lots of random touring shows coming in every week. It’s a lot cheaper than the WestEnd and still close to central London. I’ll defiantly be keeping my eye out for the next productions.

Highgate is one of my favourite places in London, simply because as the name Highgate Village suggests, it really has a village and community feel — like you are completely outside of London but actually only a 10 minute tube ride away from the hub. Along with the fabulousness of Highgate comes Upstairs at the Gatehouse which is a pub combined with a very reputable fringe theatre that shows a fantastic range of productions and plays. The pub therefore attracts a more calm and mature crowd as opposed to large groups of young people looking for a lively night out. The food available is the run of the mill Wetherspoons nosh but it is the charm of the pub and the theatre that makes this pub so special. It has never advertised or prided itself upon its menu and the general atmosphere and quaintness makes this a lovely pub to visit.

Highgate is a great area, it is close to centre of London and a beautiful little town. The Gatehouse pub sits between two roundabouts and is impossible to miss, and I am pretty sure that it is the oldest pub in Highgate. Inside is very well maintained and so is the garden, which is swarming with flowers. They have a great selection of real Ales, if that is you thing. I don’t usually drink Ale, but when in such surroundings, I just go for it. I had four different Ales and they were all good. The food is just normal Wetherspoons pub grub, and nothing to scream and shout about. It is definitely my favourite pub in Highgate and on a summer’s day, I will often visit the garden and have an Ale whilst my girlfriend has an orange juice and drives home. I wouldn’t think that this is the type of pub to go pulling in, it is more like a mature drinkers pub or somewhere to take your other half.

This Wetherspoons pub is on the corner, in the lovely little town that is Highgate. Serving extremely cheap and scrumptious food every day, including a grill night every Tuesday, a curry night every Thursday, and a Sunday club every Sunday. The portions are perfect, and you always manage to get a table even though its always buzzing with people. If you can stand the loud football being played, and the fact that there’s no music, then this is the place you should go to. They also serve real ale, ice cold beer, and the staff are moderately friendly and helpful. Go here if you want a cheap, satisfying meal.
