In the category of «affordable luxury,» here’s a new concept. A spur-of-the-moment massage can be a life-saver when you’re suffering from too much work, stress, or sight-seeing. We noticed this serene little storefront tucked away in a residential neighborhood. Some massage-related items are for sale near the front, but there’s really nothing else here but a few massage chairs(the kind you kneel forward on) and some New Age-y music. Milan, the massage therapist(his background is in shiatsu), was pleasant and skilled. He asked if we wanted him to focus on a specific area: I had some lower-back tightness, and one daughter had a knot in her upper back. My other daughter wanted something more general, so Milan worked on her back, arms, hands, and(surprisingly) scalp! Everyone left feeling relaxed and refreshed. This is very different from a conventional massage. You can pay more for a longer massage, but the goal here is not a therapeutic treatment. If you have medical issues or real pain, look elsewhere. If you need a quick indulgence, though, this is a keeper.

Tucked away on a little pedestrian lane just off Goodge Street, Walk In Backrub is just that: a little shop where you can walk in and get a good, welcome backrub. The front area has loads of massage items from small to large, cheap to costly. It also has, a bit curiously, yoga mats and mat bags for sale. I waited two minutes before being led to a massage chair and explained I’ve been having a lot of problems in my right shoulder and neck and general tension in my shoulders. The massage therapist definitely worked on these areas competently. Having expressed specific concern about these areas, I didn’t receive any wussy relaxation massage, which I appreciated. I only paid for ten minutes because I’m cheap, so now eight hours later the pain in my shoulder doesn’t feel much different. The fact that the prices for services from 30 to 60 minutes here are comparable to those at salons/spas with more private and calming atmospheres wouldn’t make me eager to return for a more lengthy service. That is, unless I get a hankering for a ten-minute rub on a whim. Plus, ten whimsical ten-minute backrubs will get you one free. Bonus points to Walk In Backrub for the loyalty card.

I absolutely love massages. Yes, I don’t know many people who don’t. Due to the fact that I’m a struggling writer in London, I can’t usually afford a full hour massage at a day spa. So my indulgence is occasionally popping into Chinese Medical centres and getting a £10, 10 minute massage. So I was delighted to discover ‘Walk-In Backrub’, a place that did just what it said on the packet. I walked in, and they gave me a backrub. And it was a damn good, reasonably priced backrub. Twenty minutes of pure bliss, and affordable enough to indulge in rather regularly. I’ll definitely be heading back for more.

The concept is simple, no appointment necessary, just walk in and enjoy for a reasonable price a massage that can be a shiatsu or a chair massage. I recommend the 30 Minute ultimate de-stress backrub at £27.00 it’s the best value for your money. The masseurs are absolute professionals that will make sure that your time there is absolute bliss and a time of relaxation. The Neal’s Yard shop is quite busy, that’s why I really like the one on Goodge Street, and it’s closer to me. Its one of those experiences that you have to try. There is no need to make big plan, just pop in and enjoy.
