I was in Norwich for the Christmas festivities and had been told that this was a great burger place and was sold on the name. Me and my girlfriend walked up the stairs and were mildly greeted at the door — we hadn’t booked and were only in for a quick bite. We were pointed out a dirty table in front of the cash register and told to sit there. We sat down with no menus and proceeded to wait for our server. Our server was an older lady and seemed nice. She apologized for the dirty table, which she cleaned. So mixed first impressions. We order a bacon and cheeseburger with Pepsi and my girlfriend order a milkshake as she wasn’t hungry. Music was good, old 50’s and 60’s tunes playing. But after three songs or so the music died and no one noticed. It killed off any atmosphere in the restaurant. I would have told someone but i couldn’t tell who worked there as it looked like people were just walking off the street and into the kitchen or onto shift, no body wore a uniform and no one seemed to be paying attention. These seems like little things that add up but, the biggest disappointment came with the food. I can’t say i was thrilled when i saw a kitchen porter bring frozen bags of onion rings and chips across the restaurant into the kitchen so i knew most of the food wasn’t home made. There was a lengthy wait for our food and to be honest i couldn’t tell if the place was busy. Seats were full but no one was rushing or looked like they were busy. My Pepsi emptied pretty quick and they were severed in tiny glasses. Hardly American style! And my girlfriend’s Milkshake was no where to be seen. Eventually it all arrived, when our server put the food down she proceeded to turn with out asking if we needed anything else. I quickly asked if she could refill my drink. The food was horrible — a small charred burger and some really unseasoned fries. What was laughable was the huge condiment serving they gave us in a divider that dwarfed everything else on the table. I was so angry at this point i instead of saying anything and didn’t want to be rude we got up paid and left. Normally i would have said something. Put given the blasé attitude of the place, i felt it would have fallen on deaf ears. For an American themed restaurant it seems like a really bad British take on what an American restaurant is. A lot of stars and stripes but none of the service. With the rise of burger bars like Byron and Honest Burger you would expect places like this to start upping their game. I honestly believe that this place has seen better days.

Don’t let the outside fool you, slightly hidden is an all American burger joint. Follow the stairs up to a cosy gallery like space over looking the Norwich surrounded by American memorabilia. It is definitely cosy, with cramped in small benches that fit 4 thin people. It would be good for a casual night or or even potential date. Not the best for groups bigger than four otherwise seperated into 2 tables. The burgers are MASSIVE, full of comforting, no fuss American goodness. Perfect washed down with a milkshake or a root beer. The huge portions and fun nature of this hip burger joint makes it value for money.

cap’n america’s is a norwich legend in it’s own lunchtime. i’ve been going since the seventies and it hasn’t changed a bit. i heard that it’s been kept open and unaltered by the parents of the owner by way of hommage because he sadly died way before his time soon after it was opened

First impressions count, and this place tucked up a grotty set of stairs ticks all the boxes. It’s early on a Tuesday night, so not heaving, but the ambience is great. A bunch of booths for dining, decent music(it’s starting to fill up now) and funky décor. Bud is only 3.30 a pint a revelation for a Henley-ite and the waiter is friendly and helpful. Food has now turned up literally within five minutes. Let me taste and then carry onTwenty minutes later and two stone in weight. I have absolutely nothing whatsoever to complain about. That was a damn good meal, at a damn good price and probably one of the best American meals I have had in my entire life. Sublime burger cooked to perfection, absolutely smothered in chili, a mountain of fries, a mixed salad big enough to be a meal in itself and a pint of Bud. Grand total £13.95. Get in there!

34. Captain Americas is a small and cosy resteraunt situated not far from Jarrold’s in Norwich’s city centre. Inside the resteraunt is fairly small as previously mentioned, and tables are quite close together with narrow ‘walkways’ to walk down(which may be a problem if you have a larger build). There are many props around the restaurant giving it an authentic feel(e.g. old American advertising posers, etc). The portion sizes and food quality is excellent and comparable to somewhere such as Zak’s. The drinks menu is also fantastic with a wide range of worldwide beers would definitely recommended this place to a friend.

Ive been frequenting this diner since I can remember. I love it. The booths are a nice touch and the staff brilliant. The stairs are a bit tricky for the elderly though and not exactly pushchair friendly.

A really crazy place that serves what has to be the best hamburgers in the city. If you want a dining experience that you’ll never forget, slip into this place, even though its easy to miss despite being right accross from Jarrolds near the Market. Order anything from the menu, anything at all, and prepare to be amazed. A great experience every time
