I stumbled upon Malt Cross wandering the streets of Nottingham one night and I’m so glad I discovered such an enchanting spot. Once you walk in, you are reminded of a saloon. There are three levels – the ground floor where the bar is surrounded by booths and ample seating; the middle floor where the artist is playing on a balcony overlooking the ground floor; and a more intimate top floor to escape everything. I was actually having a pretty terrible day in Nottingham, but it was something about the friendly staff, open atmosphere, and beautiful music that quickly uplifted me. Malt Cross is really a go-to spot in Nottingham if you’re ever in the area and in the mood for some live music!

A good pub for meeting people in as it is pretty quiet. Lovely building, ales and food available, plus coffee etc. which is quite popular in the daytime.

Fantastic little oasis of culture in the center of Nottinghams busy hubbub. This old Victorian music hall has been turned in to a lovely pub come restaurant come coffee shop come live music venue. There’s a different vibe at different times of the day, but all good. A good selection of about 5 real ales) normally including the specially brewed«music hall») as well as a full range of European larger. A must-visit.

A hidden gem in an old victorian music hall on St Jame’s Street. This is a great place for a coffee, lunch, or relaxed evening drinking, or to take in the frequent gigs or comedy acts. The Malt Cross attracts an eclectic crowd of students and other culture lovers(think Broadway). Stop by for a chilled-out drink away from the noise and barely-restrained thuggery of the many other bars around market square.

This is a really cool bar situated really near the centre of Nottingham. It’s a really old looking building which really keeps loads of character. There is a really relaxed vibe in here. The food menu has a good choice and is very tasty. There’s a good selction of tea and hot chocolate looks to die for(have usually stuck to beer!).

Nice place that you could easily walk past without noticing it, if you weren’t looking for it. I believe it was a Victorian music hall back in the day. I haven’t eaten here, i’ve only been in for drinks and once to play a gig there. They don’t have a selection of real ales, it is more of a continental lager place. There is a relaxed ambience to the place, and although the clientele are fairly diverse, it does seem to be a favourite with slightly alternative-but-trendy types in their early 20s… some of whom have an air of pretentiousness about them, even though the bar itself doesn’t in my opinion. If you are in the Market Square area and want to avoid the scummier drinking holes, this place is a great option. My only grumble is that if there is a band playing, you have to pay to get in. The last I knew, a band played every other Saturday, so it was always 50⁄50 as to whether I went in or not. If you really want to be organised, say, if you are planning a pub crawl, check their website to find out if a band is on or not on your night out.

I love this place! The building is so beautiful inside and it’s so central. They do great coffees and very naughty hot chocolates. I had a yummy slice of chocolate brownie last time I was there :-)

Malt cross is firstly such an interesting building architecturally, i think it use to be an old dance hall. It’s a really great space. There’s always lots going on there, film screening, live music. It has a really nice selection of homemade food, and does a great tiffin cake, which they normally have in a jar on the counter. The place has a really nice atmosphere!

The Malt Cross is located on St James’s Street, just off the Old Market Square, and is a former music hall. Prices are not particularly cheap, but the comfortable environment and friendly staff make up for that. It attracts a young-ish crowd, but is the sort of bar where all are welcome and no-one need feel out of place. There is a very relaxed atmosphere and it’s a nice place in which to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. The low-key background music adds to the overall ambience and the venue also plays host to some great live acts. Recommended.

This place is a great mixture of a bar and a place to grab a coffee with friends. So rather than heading to the main coffee bars of the city it is worth wakling up St James street and down to Malt Cross. My favourite is without doubt the hot chocolate they serve complete with marsh mallow toppings! For once I am happy to give myself some indulgence and ignore the calorie counter. As with any place you head with friends for a coffee and a catch up it is important not to feel rushed and almost as though you are sat in your lounge at home chatting away. This place manages to capture that feeling for me and provides a perfect location for a get together in the daytime.

The Malt Cross is a truly unique café and bar. While it is only a minutes walk from Old Market Square it is hidden down a small street but it is definately worth seeking out. It is a bit of surprise when entering the building because it looks pretty plain from the outside but the building is an old Victorian music hall which has been kept in its original form with a stage at the back and a balcony around three sides of the building. The food served is good value and of a high quality, there is a great selection of sandwiches and a full roast on Sundays. In the evening it is more of a bar and also hosts live music regularly.

It’s a pub. A very nice pub, unusual in the way its interior is laid out. There is a rumour that it used to be a church of some kind, and the interior echos that. The whole space is two storeys high, with the first floor being just a balcony clinging to the walls halfway to the fully glazed ceiling. There seems to have been a stage of some kind a the front of the building, and it is said that church choir practices still take place there. Apart from the mysticism it is a great pub to be, with friendly bartenders, a dj on deck every weekend with a quirky take on pub music. The drinks are reasonably priced, and probably some of the best deals are to be had on the wine.

This Café/Bar is huge, with a high ceiling and balcony level, and quirky décor. They sometimes hold open mic nights or have bands so there’s always something going on, and the mix of students and trendy locals is good. They serve decent bistro style food, such as nachos, burgers and wraps at reasonable prices, and have a large selection of drinks. I also hear that their hot chocolate is to die for, though they stop serving it at 6pm, so best get there early. It’s a great place to hang out with friends on a lazy Sunday, can’t wait to visit again.
