This pub is under new ownership, but has retained its old school charm. No sports. A lovely fire in winter, a great beer garden in summer, and plenty of board games to pass the hours. On the weekends it can get busy with locals, but on most week days there is room to have a quiet chat undisturbed. The land lord and his family are really lovely. They have been experimenting with what food to have on offer, and one day I brought my god daughter mistakenly thinking they had hot food. They alas did not, but the proprietress made extra pasta she was making for her own children to share with my god daughter. It’s that kind of friendly local classic place, and so a real gem.

A truly classic Oxford pub. The landlord usually keeps TWO open fires going which is a treat on a claggy cold Oxford night. The beer is absolutely exceptional here — possibly the only pub in Oxford where I’ve never had a duff pint. The landlord has the most amazingly eclectic taste in music and I’ve loved hearing Zimbawean music, Senegalese palm wine and Brazilian salsa. Ask him to play his collection of Mongolian nose-flute music — you won’t be disappointed. Food is a bit basic but the smell of toasted sandwiches is divine.
