I don’t have a very sweet tooth so the cup cakes I ordered were quite good. Since I’d never been there before I ordered the much talked about red velvet cake and my friend chose a salted caramel. I preferred the icing on the salted caramel and although the red velvet is quite popular I thought it was quite dry and the icing a little too sweet. Not much in the choice of herbal teas either, only peppermint and fruit tea to choose from. Overall, it’s fine as a one off but wouldn’t go again in a hurry.

The front of the bakery tempts you with their window display of decorated cupcakes and gives you a taste of what to expect from their range of sweets inside. When we first walked in I was amazed at the range of cakes, cupcakes, muffins and other sweet treats on display. I had a very tough time deciding which one to have as they all looked delicious and there was some interesting flavour combinations. The brownie had a nice flavour with moderate richness. I tend to prefer my brownies to be of a more ‘gooey’ texture but with the cheesecake on top of it I can see how that would not have worked. The cheesecake on top of the brownie was not very flavoursome. Overall it was an interesting combination to try but not one that I would go back to as it did not ‘wow’ me and there were plenty of other cakes on display to try out. There is seating at the back of the café for patrons, which I found to be a little under lit. Though the air-conditioning did the job for giving us relief from the summer hear. I would recommend giving the cakes a try at the Hummingbird Café, however perhaps look into a take away order and wander around the corner to Richmond common to enjoy them out in the outdoors(weather dependant of course!).

I don’t have a sweet tooth, I have sweet TEETH. :D This is a solid place to grab a slice of heaven. My favorites have to be the lemon raspberry cake, the red velvet(their best seller) and the the rainbow cake… in that order. I have yet to try any of their whoopie pies because they sell out so fast! I find the staff to be awfully nice and great conversation starters despite the usually hectic environment of customers with their mini-me’s. The cakes are moist, rich and not too sweet. It’s a pretty intense experience biting into the red velvet for the first time if you ask me. Just because a place is lacking enough tables during peak business hours(maybe do takeaway?), is crowded with kids(what did you expect from a shop selling such delicious sweets?) and the sweets offered are on the pricey side(if you eat this often, yes — if so, I’m more worried about your health than the finance bit if you don’t make this a once-in-a-while treat), it should not affect the rating based on the overall quality and service. If you are still hung up over the price, there is a Tesco down the street where the bakery goods are edible and the quality questionable. Overall, Hummingbird is a great place to stop by as a fantastic treat and I recommend takeaway(you save about a pound), walk the 8 minutes to the river and enjoy it with good company.

Went there yesterday with my partner. We had one red velvet cake and one raspberry cheesecake brownie. The red velvet cake was really moist and delicious, but the cheesecake was not as expected. The cream cheese seemed flavourless. Overall the cakes are a bit pricey and the place is quite crowded with a few tables only. Also if you decide to not eat in, all the cakes will be cheaper by one pound.

The Hummingbird bakery does make quality cakes and other bakes, but for the price, I’ve had better. I came here with a friend who specifically wanted to come due to her love of cakes, and she felt the same way. We ordered three things and split them between us: a red velvet cupcake, a chocolate peanut butter whoopie pie, and a slice of rainbow cake. Her favorite was the red velvet, I was in love with the dark chocolate and whipped peanut butteryness of the whoopie pie, and we both liked the rainbow cake but thought it was just TOO much. It had a kind of tutti-fruiti flavour, and between that and the bajillion layers and all the frosting, it was just too sweet for us. We were defeated by one slice of cake and couldn’t finish it. My recommendation to Hummingbird would be to sell the cakes in smaller slices and charge less for them, because it was not cheap. It also didn’t help that there were tons of kids constantly running around and pushing past us the majority of the hour and a half or so that we were there chatting. Not a calm kind of place to hang out. But still, solid baking — I’d probably recommend the cupcakes for takeaway, but the cake slices are just too big.
