Hidden gem but very popular with those in the know. It’s a traditional back street pub selling a good range of real ale and serving decent food. Full when I visited but service was quick and the beer was good. Good selection of table sizes and layout.

Great beer, hearty food. Can highly recommend the fish and chips and the Cajun Fajita wrap. Also, the chicken wings starter, most places will give you 4 or 5, here, you got a bowlful, at least 8 – 10 in there

This pub is tucked away near the Jessop West building, and I spent many a night here with flatmates who were archaeology and osteo students – for birthdays, jenga games with fellow British students from masters classes. The ambiance varies. On the best nights, there is a live jazz ensemble complete with a singer, cellist, and bassist. On the… err…‘iffy’ nights, the place is literally packed to the brim, nobody can move even a bare inch, and the whole establishment positively reeks with a stomach-churning stench of old, spilt beer(but that was only once when I went on a very crowded evening – even the beer garden was lovely that time, though it was a tad smoke-filled). My friends swear by the kumara fries. I enjoy the cheese platter which I shared with three friends – that had delectably flavored slices of cheese, and perfectly-cured olives. The place is filled with students, professors alike, neighbors, friends – an eclectic mix. I have many fond memories about this place – the décor, the games, and celebrations. I moved back to America after my time here, and I have yet to find a place that rivals the cozy, warm atmosphere of Red Deer on a chilly, English night in the dead of winter.

Great hidden little pub just on the main district of west street. Fantastic selection of real ales and good food too. The beer garden is very nice too, not the cheapest pub in the world but still reasonable.

Another Sheffield pub with eight different beers to choose from. My selection wasn’t super quality though, it lacked maybe little bit consistent consistency. Penine Real Blonde was drinkable but seemed on the turn. The Fish Finger sandwich with kumala fries(sweet potatoe) made up for the average beer though, very nice. Fills up with students after daytime TV the days university business is over. I arrived just prior to the influx.

Lovely pub. Great beer range. There were 9 hand pulls on when I was there. Nice atmosphere coupled with a cosy beer garden. Highly recommended, especially the roast dinner

This is my favourite Sheffield pub, hands down. There’s a wide variety of ale on tap, and the food is delicious and quite reasonably priced. The service is phenomenal, with friendly bar staff who are always willing to provide recommendations. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and there are plenty of events on – comedy, live music, pub quiz, etc… I’ve been coming here for over a year, and I’ve never been disappointed by the quality of the ale or the service provided. Highly recommended!

Nice pub with a good atmosphere and friendly bartenders. I came in with a big group of archaeologists on a Monday afternoon and found a place to sit without any problems. Lots of ales on tap – I didn’t try the food.

A city centre proper pub. It has an older clientelle(50+) and serves a number of different ales. Very relaxed, maybe too relaxed bordering on dull for others. Has a very hard quiz on Tuesday’s(I think). A nice place to escae from the busier, rowdier nearby West Street pubs.

Love the quiz! Always a warm feeling in there(with or without the fire) that makes you feel welcome when you enter the door.

The Red Deer is one of Sheffield’s famous city-centre real ale pubs. There’s always a good selection of decent and reasonably priced bitters on hand pump(including Deuchars and Tetley’s) but it lacks a decent Continental lager. If you’re out for a quiet drink there’s usually plenty of room to sit down and there’s no noisy TV or juke box to ruin the mood. The pub is a bit frayed around the edges but this only adds to the ‘proper pub’ ambience. Staff are young and friendly and will usually have a go at advising you on your beer choice. Music and literary events are often staged in an upstairs room and its close proximity to the University Archaeology Department means that you can often spot some TV archaeologists in the pub.

The Red Deer is situated just of West Street and I have heard it described as a country pub in the city centre’, which is quite an accurate description. It is a popular spot for lecturers from the nearby university departments to pop in to for a swift drink after work. There is usually a good selection of ales(though generally I find they are not as interesting a variety as some of the other real ale pubs in the area). The staff are friendly and there is a nice homely atmosphere, helped by the fireplace and the clientele, which is generally mature than the nearby West Street. If you don’t want loud trendy bars, the Red Deer is another venue to add to the list of quieter, more traditional city centre bars and indeed would come very near to the top of the list! Reccomended.

Over-rated establishment — usually busy, ale selection is very disappointing — Deuchars, Black Sheep, Banks and Adnams Original I think. Very exciting. Not. Don’t bother, walk down to the Dev Cat instead for a selection of guests. little dark and looking rather untidy and in need of a facelift. There were five casks — the usual suspects, so a bit of a let down in town known for its range of beers from the smaller, more interesting breweries.

A lovely warm traditional pub hidden behind West Street. Great range of ales. Average prices. Welcoming bar staff. Plenty of seats. Nicely laid out. Decent sized beer garden. Comes highly recommended to any lover of traditional pubs.

Animal by name, animal by nature: pop into The Red Deer for a drink and you may find Ratchet, the local cat clamped on your lap, claiming residence. This is a warm, cosy place. Think a pint of Timothy Taylor Landlord rather than a glass of Prosecco. Appreciating the crackling fire and beer garden you’ll find a nice blend of loyal regulars, academics and mature students(the kids go to West Street, just round the corner). As a result, the pub quiz is nigh-on impossible! The Red Deer should also be known for a good choice of ales. There are big boards telling you about the guests: the taste, how strong they are, how much they are, etc. It’s difficult to criticise the place to be honest, other than to say it’s not the easiest to find. I suppose the surroundings could be better, but that would ruin the feeling of discovery you get when you finally find the place.
