I went here for lunch on a Saturday afternoon and, although it was busy, we managed to get a table within a few minutes. I ordered the king scallops with parma ham, rocket, and pesto, and my boyfriend had the seabass. The scallops were cooked really well and the pesto seemed homemade and tasted good. The seabass was also lovely, with a very crisp skin and moist, tender, fish.

The Lord Nelson is a Southwold staple. Situated by the beach, you can sup your pint outside with some views, or hunker down inside away from the wind. Due to this location, it’s always busy at weekends and during food service. We always pop in for a pint after wandering around Southwold, but we also ate here. At first, we sat down outside, underneath a clever covering — with various heaters placed by the outdoor tables, it’s easy enough to sit out with too many complaints. However, on one trip to the bar, a free table had come up inside so we quickly nabbed it. It’s all about the elbows! We started with some chicken wings, which were big and shiny with sauce, but not as hot as I was expecting. As they were wings, they were pretty hard to eat, but we managed! I went for the green thai main(chips really do get tiring!) served with sticky rice. It tasted like it came from a Lloyd Grossman jar, but I didn’t expect anything more — and it was still bloody tasty. There was a huge portion of chicken, and corn and green beans throughout the sauce, so I was practically getting some of my 5 a day right? Everything was super filling and good value for the money paid. Head in for an afternoon pint and to play some cards. It’s what it’s made for.

Nice dogs. Nice birds across the road. Shame about the VW what’s door fell off.
