My main problem with this restaurant was the over-zealous service. The restaurant was very quiet, so it wasn’t like they were encouraging table turnaround. But we were approached two or three times while we still had our menus open and were choosing. So I was rushed into decision making. Then they would be hovering and clearing plates as soon as we’d finished, and offering us desert menus, coffee etc. when we’d barely finished our last mouthful of pizza. So we were there probably an hour after we’d paid for our meal, still talking, where they could have got further purchases if we hadn’t been harassed all night. The fact that we had four different people serve us in one way or the other added to the feeling of being swarmed by staff. Also I don’t like to get personal, but one of the server was wearing extremely overpowering perfume — which you don’t want when eating. The food wasn’t bad. The starter was okay, the pizza very nice but not exceptional. They just need to calm down… eating out is about an experience, not shoving food down your mouth and getting out.

Quite the worst meal I have had in St Albans. The starter was straight out of a tin, the beans did not even have the brine washed off them ! The main course was overcooked, the salad tired. If you want an icecream on a hot day or a overpriced pizza then maybe, a decent meal — no way.

Verdi’s Trattoria is located in Clarence Road, next to Clarence Park, about 30 minutes walk north of the City centre. The building started life as the public toilets but has now been converted a modern venue with attractive conservatory at the rear. The staff are friendly and accomodating. The menu serves traditional Italian fayre, pasta, pizzas and salads. It is of a good standard although you do wait a long time and built up an appetite. The drinks are quite reasonable and the wine selection is well stocked. The prices are a little expensive for what you get. The upstairs area is a good space for larger groups. I would recommend this place but not as a first choice.
