This is a place that was good in the70’s but not now. The first thing you see when entering is the stannah stair lift and the place has a feel and the smell of an old folks home. I would swear that the food is boil in the bag no taste, no colour and its far from cheap. Why oh why would anyone go there? I think most of the customers are from people who went from the 70’s and it is still trading on that reputation. Institution? well yes but so is an an old folks home!!! Far better place and choice around now a days. Don’t go you will be disappointed.

Seriously in need of a refurbishment. This place is a throwback to 1980’s, with queen jubilee vases & chintz everywhere. The food is pretty good but bog standard & the dusty picture of princess Diana glaring down on me really does put me of my peppercorn steak.

This is right in the centre of st helens, it looks nice from the outside, the tables are set up nicely. There is a downstairs part, and the bar is right there very small though. The upstairs is alot bigger with plenty of tables. The last time i went here it was for a wedding reception it was nice but very standard. The meals were okay it was a 4 course meal which includes starter which is a selection of soups or melon, then main course a selection of meats chicken, turkey etc which come with veg etc. Then puddings that include ice cream or a sponge cake. The staff were very nice and helpful.

This is a very nostalgic restaurant for me as I’ve been going there since I was a little girl. The food was always simple and tradiational but not very exciting don’t go there if you are looking to try anything new — unless you’ve never had a a roast dinner before. The staff are friendly and the prices are reasonable but the surrounding are very dated.

Five stars for food, everything tastes so good and fresh. Do a selection of lunch time offers and then at the weekend you can taste their delicious very reasonably prices sunday lunch. Definately worth a visit. Also caters for functions i.e. weddings. Again top standard food — can cater for large parties with no skimping on the standard or quality.

Modest suroundings, simple food but not bad. The menu has something for everyone including children and vegetarians. More a family venue really somewhere to take the kids when you dont want to cook, prices ok.

This apparent fixture of an eaterie is claimed to be the longest trading in St Helens and has been on the scene since 1966(No I wasn’t at the opening!!) To trade succcessfully for so long through over fourty years of change is both amazing and a testament to its wonderful standards and good value. The menu is toatally retro– Prawn salad starters. Steak Diane mains, Peach Melba sweets etc etc but the choice is extensive, its prepared, cooked and served perfectly and in pleasant surroundings. The Ritz it is not but it is as always excellent!!!
