Rossini

Contrary to my companions, I really enjoyed myself at Rossini.
Ulverston might have around 18 pubs, but they certainly lack restaurants. Mexican, Chinese, Indian, and this Italian. On a Saturday, you need to book, even for the pubs, and we were completely caught out. Eventually, after ringing through the pubs, we managed to get a table at 8pm at Rossini.
Inside, it’s nicely decorated, if a bit traditional-​English-​Italian; various plants, wine bottles, and watercolours in shades of bue and terracotta. The main thing that hit me was the lack of noise from outside, just the noise of customers, and a slightly odd soundtrack of Westlife and Dido, though this was barely audible and, I assume, mainly for the kitchen staff.
I skipped a starter but nabbed some of the other half’s arancini balls — fried risotto balls — and they didn’t dissapoint. Lightly flavoured and the perfect consistency, and served with a lovely rep pepper sauce. For main I tucked in to/​devoured a beef, chicken, ham and cheese calzone. And it was delicious. And I finished it. The beef was nice and spicy, the same as the meatballs, and everything was heated through nicely, bound by a tomato sauce. For something like £8.95, this seemed like great value to me as I was stuffed. But, true to form, not stuffed enough, as I had a nice and simple chocolate-​nut sundae for dessert. Toffee and vanilla ice-​cream with whipped cream and nuts with chocolate sauce. Sounding good isn’t it?
We polished off the meal with a shot of limoncello each, despite the young waitress not really knowing what it was, and left feeling full and happy.
A gem for Ulverston as it’s not awash with this kind of eating — it’s good to remember there’s more than just pubs to visit. Though those are good too.

The six of us were staying overnight in The King’s Head opposite Rossini’s. It was an excellent choice for our evening meal. The menu is extensive but not expensive. Our meals were excellent with large portions. Very good value for money. We all had garlic bread, starter and main meal. We had either a pint of Peroni or a large rose wine. The whole bill was just less than £15 per person. Parking is not easy and you have to walk 3 or 4 streets. Well recommended.

Having ordered a pizza 30 mins before collection and then having to wait 10 mins while they cook it — someone is having a laugh. It was an awful pizza to boot.

I love Italian restaurants with happy hours for celebrations as they suit all ages, budgets and tastes.
I recently booked Rossinis happy hour for a party of 12 adults and 12 children for a birthday. The food was really delicious and the service fast and friendly (we pre– booked our orders).
I can’t believe I have been dragging everone to the Italian restaurants in barrow, lancaster and Kendal for celebrations when this was on our doorstep!
I think Ulverston needs a proper Italian restaurant where you can take all your family and I recommend this one to you all.

we stumbled in here, while we were visiting Ulverston for the first time, during the week-​end of their Dickensian Christamas Festival. We loved both. The festival was fantastic, and we’re planning on going back next year, and maybe staying over in Ulverston instead of Bowness, which is where we usually head for some Lake time. We will definately be calling in here for lunch again. The service was so friendly, polite and informative. The atmosphere was warm and comfortable, a real italian vibe. We plumped for a Ceasar Salad to share and a Seafood pizza between us. It was perfect. I wish we had been hungrier, as all around us were enjoying fresh pasta, then divine looking desserts. Yum. We will be back, and then round the corner for fresh roast chestnuts!

Good basic Italian style restaurant. You can ask for extra large portions. Friendly staff. They have a happy hour 5 – 6.30 when pasta & pizzas are £4.50, and there is also an A la Carte menu.
