This place looks like nothing from the outside but once you step inside it’s a combination of traditional and modern which has been blended really effectively! The welcome was warm and the hospitality felt good! There’s obviously some demand as all the tables were reserved by 5.30pm but the staff managed to find a table with the provisos we had limited time as it was reserved for 7pm! Fine by us though… The menu is huge and the 5 – 8 deal is phenomenal! No wonder it’s popular… When it arrived the food was good! I’d call it classy pub grub! Beware though — if you go for the Greek starter you’ll be disappointed! Pittas, olives and humus = pitta, 4 olives and humus! But like I say, it’s pub grub not top notch cuisine… All in all, nice — not great but nice! I’ll go again for a good pub meal.

Two courses for £3.95. We thought it would be rubbish but we were pleasantly surprised. The food was excellent and the staff were lovely. The pub was clean and atmospheric. Highly recommended.

The Shippons is a strange little pub based in Irby village, a great little village in between Pensby and Thingwall on the Wirral. Now Irby is a place I spent most of my childhood so I hold it in high regard as far as nostalgia goes, it’s a place with a really friendly village vibe to it. As far as the Shippon’s is concerned though, I’d say it’s a very clicky pub and I’ve had one or two negative experiences in here in the past. The first was a few years back when the manger barred me and a friend for not drinking up fast enough, rather than just taking our drinks from us. Now I’ve been back since and they seem to be under new management, but I’d strongly recommend other pubs in the area over this one. Pubs such as the Cottage Loaf and the Anchor, both of which are within walking distance of this one.

This is a recent pub which is around 12 years old but has been made to look a lot older. It is on the site of the former cow shed of the local farm, hence the name ‘shippon’. It has low ceilings and is a long narrow venue, with stone floors, low beams and a small bar. The pub serves food during the day and is open for drinks all day and night. It can get quite busy on weekends and other times really quiet. Occasionally have special nights on there. Service is good and staff are friendly. Cosy pub!
