Any negatives are far out weighed by the excellent ales and wonderful staff so if you do go in when its really busy stick with it for a great experience oh and food is really good as well! Thankyou pub for two really good visits this weekend if I ever return to York you are first onmy list to visit along with the Slip Inn of course!

The oldest pub in York. I highly recommend eating here on a Sunday for the Sunday dinner but caution you to come early as they run out quickly. Also the steak pie and fish & chips are good as well. This is another place where you take note of your table number and order at the bar. Some of the tables in the front room are a bit wobbly so be careful with your drinks.

This place is beautifully old, with wooden paneling and that sense of a true british pub with a good old fire. We had popped in for a quick drink, I was so delighted of the many different ales and craft beers on and off tap .the staff were just as homely as the pub :) While Sat down next to the warming fire we eyed up these giant platters going back to and fro filled with Sunday roast tasties. it was then I vowed to come back. We had planned to check out the Chinese with a friend but after a no show we retraced our steps. Unfortunately the Sunday roasts sell out FAST so you have to be quick. Unfortunately we were not fast enough. To be honest I then struggled to decide what to have, I Mean the fish and chips looked fab but the portion was intimidating. so I opted for a red pepper soup and a veggie version of fish and chips. The fish was substituted with Hallumi and for an extra pound I upgraded my fries to sweet potato… The wait wasn’t bad and the chef personally delivered our food. However when he went away I realised that they had forgotten to upgrade my fries. I wouldn’t have minded as much but these weren’t homemade. which is a shame as everything else here oozes with home made stuff. the manageress was so apologetic and came back several times to ensure we were enjoying the meal. The soup had been nice but forgettable, the halloumi cheese was a great idea for a battered cod substitute. my other halfs pie was also fantastically made… I rate this place highly for the service, ambiance and drink selection. however I was let down by the food slightly. I would defiantly try and grab a roast dinner though.

Hidden off the beaten track. Very nice place. Serves decent beer and the food is very good. On a busy day, it can be fairly tight. But still worth going in.

The sign across the middle of the road, drawing your attention to this pub, is something I have never seen before. Its a nice pub with lots of different rooms, but can get quite cramped! Must have been horrible when it was being used to house wounded soldiers during the English civil war. Yes it is that old! Fairytale of New York from Kelham Island was a decent dark beer and not too strong at a safe but tasty 4.2pc
