Uncle Joe’s Barbecue

My husband and I went to St. Johns for our honeymoon, we stayed in Cruz Bay and passed this place daily. Let me start off by saying everywhere we ate in St. John was amazing. We decided to try something different one day and have this bbq. When we received our food it was cold we got the ribs and chicken combo. After we were done eating we found out that it was cash so I to leave my husband there and run around to find cash. The woman at the register who was an older woman with braces was the most unfriendly nasty woman and I live in the NY area so I’m used to rude people. I said I was sorry I didn’t have cash and I would be right back and left my husband as collateral! Finally, I found an atm that worked and paid for the cold bbq.
That isn’t even the worst of it as soon as we got home I wasn’t feeling well so I laid down for a bit. About an hour later I got violently sick, a half an hour later my husband got violently sick. We were sick for about 24 hours every half an hour. This was the only thing we ate that day. We were told we had food poisoning. Even though this ruined a day of our honeymoon St. John the island itself is beautiful and we will return but will never come back to Joe’s. EAT AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!

My husband and I ate here numerous times over the years. It’s probably the best place on St John for bbq. I do recommend that you do take out unless you have a super high tolerance for very loud music. Still you’re there for the food not the ambience or music. Five stars for bbq minus two stars for in dining experience.

You would never guess walking past that this is the best BBQ ever. I had the combo ribs and chicken. Ribs fell off the bone, no knife needed. Can’t wait to come back.

Wife and I visited for an early dinner. The location is very casual and nothing fancy at all (which didn’t bother us) We ordered couple beers and the BBQ chicken and rib plates. They come with a choice of two sides. We had rice and beans and coleslaw.
Rib were fall off the bone and covered in delicious BBQ sauce. The chicken was great as well.
Prices were okay and service was friendly and fast.

Had Uncle joe’s as part of our Island Tour. They catered our meal out at Trunk Bay. The BBQ chicken was sweet and delicious, the burgers were big and the buns fresh. The coleslaw was sweet and the beans and rice were tasty too. Definately worth it!

This was the BEST BBQ I’ve had in awhile (and I live in Texas). The menu is limited, with the main options being BBQ chicken or ribs. But there are additional seafood options. The chicken was cooked perfectly and the portions are decent. The BBQ sauce was really good too. I went a couple days ago, but I’ll be sure to go back before I leave!

Had read the rave reviews on this place. Rice and beans was short on beans and lacked flavor. Cole slaw was dry and the meat needed more flavor. There was too much BBQ sauce placed on the ribs. Ribs and chicken were good but not outstanding.

This is probably the best Sit-​in BBQ place in the USVI. It was initially hard to find. It is located across from the post office on the corner. However, I can’t be too generous with giving a high star rating because the menu had a very limited selection. Basically, your only options are bbq chicken with rice/​beans or cole slaw. I was hoping for more options, but the food was really good and not too expensive. Cash only here (as was the case for many places in St. John).

This place has great BBQ chicken but I wish they had more options for sides. My husband and I ordered the chicken platter which came with 2 sides (corn on the cob, macaroni salad or rice with beans). We both chose the rice.

Walked to town to get it for dinner. Great food reasonably priced. Took it to go enjoyed it overlooking the water. Ordered 3 dinners 4 of us are and had left overs.

Now THIS is that wonderful Caribbean spot which I had been jonesing for since I first set foot in the USVI. Knowing that much of what we know as barbecue in the states draws from Caribbean origins, I had my mouth set to try some while I was off the mainland. In had noticed Uncle Joe’s when we had passed it on the way to the docks for a morning fishing trip our first day on the island. I took note of it and knew that I must return there because I had a good feeling about it. The next day I found myself wandering around Cruz Bay doing some souvenir shopping. It was lunchtime and I happened upon Uncle Joe’s again. Perfect timing! The whole area is open air and covered awning. I told the nice lady that was waiting on me that I had been wanting to have some Caribbean bbq since I landed. She told me that I came to the right place, and I believed her. While the chicken and ribs looked very tempting, when she told me that the catch of the day was mahi mahi I was sold on that. I chose rice and beans and slaw for my sides. They got to work on my meal while I sipped a cold Heineken. About ten minutes later they brought out my plate. The fish was marinated and grilled to perfection, and topped with their signature bbq sauce. The sides were also very delicious. This definitely cured my Caribbean island bbq jones. My only regret is that I only made it here once during this last visit, but I’d definitely go back when I find myself on the island again. Next time I’d have to try the ribs and chicken!

This place is the BEST BBQ we’ve had in a long time! We all agreed, enjoyed the chicken and the ribs as well as their corn on the cob and rice. I don’t know what more I can say other than you’ll want to go here for sure!!!

Not friendly staff at all… Wanted extra sauce and they ignored me. Average BBQ at best, average portions and above average prices. I guess it is ok but definitely not something I would go twice to!

Good food, good value and nice staff. The ribs were very good and the half chicken good. Entrees come with two side and the portions were a great size. We did a to go and for both entrees it was $ 24! That’s an amazing value on the island!

Really wanted a hole-​in-​the-​wall local spot for our last dinner in Cruz Bay, but was dissapointed by both service and food. Rude wait staff and my bbq chicken and ribs were slathered in bbq sauce masking the possibly delicious taste of the meat itself.

Uncle Joes BBQ is a must for anyone that loves bbq. I had the combination plate which came with chicken and ribs and two sides. Although the chicken was amazing I found that I could not get enough of uncle joes BBQ ribs. I will be making a 2^nd and maybe even a 3^rd visit before I leave the island.
Simply put this is some of the best food
On the island and fairly priced.

I was not expecting to eat some of the best BBQ I’ve ever had in the Virgin Islands for starters. Seriously, if there was an Uncle Joe’s BBQ in LA, he’d put a lot of places out of business. Came here on day 5 of our 2^nd trip to St.John. I settled on my favorite– pork ribs, baby back cut while the other party had BBQ chicken. It was so succulent and tender-​meat practically falling off the bone, smothered in a sauce that was sweet, spicy and tangy. It came with macaroni salad and coleslaw. The service was feisty.
If I ever get the privilege to come back, I’m definitely eating here.

Relaxed, casual outdoor café with great barbecue. The sides and drinks are good too! Your choice of chicken or beef. Our party had both and everyone enjoyed their meal. They only take cash and you pay at the counter when you’ve finished.

For our last night on the St John we decided we had to give this place a try. For the past 3 days we have been driving by this little restaurant and the place is always busy and the smells are to die for… BBQ in the air.
We ordered 4 plates; 2 chicken, 1 rib and 1 salmon plate all with rice and cole slaw to go. We wanted to go back to our condo and enjoy our digs and we had plenty of wine in our condo to finish up before we left the island.
While I have had better BBQ in plenty of other places, this was very good BBQ all the same, especially for the islands. The price for four meals was very reasonable for St Johns. As long as you realize that this is NOT gourmet cooking, it’s BBQ, you’ll enjoy the food. Your on vacation on a remote island, be reasonable regarding your expectations of a road side BBQ stand/​outside eating establishment.
