Chez André

With no lunch plans and limited wifi, my husband and I were forced to choose a restaurant based on ratings alone without being able to read actual reviews. I really wanted some French onion soup and Chez André had it on the menu.
It was mid-​day and the restaurant was mostly empty save for a few other tables. Two of the tables were speaking French so I hoped we landed on a decent spot.
The wine prices were much higher than comparable spots we visited. A half bottle of rosé was about twice the price of the bistro we had visited the day before, and not as good. The French onion soup was solid. I requested water for our table but our server essentially forgot about us after delivering the soup. And yet, a bottle of water was listed on our check, which I rectified with the manager.
Okay spot but I’d most likely try something else next time.

On a recommendation from a friend that know Paris well, we walked up and down Rue Marbeuf and found several places all serving stereotypical French cuisine ranging from obscenely expensive to moderate. The best place that we could find within our budget and menu desires was Chez André. We went early enough so did not need a reservation, however, if you plan to dine during peak hours, this place packed up quickly.
The interior was what I expected of a Parisian café-​style restaurant: small tables very close to one another, circa ‘40s music playing, and waitresses dressed in black and white with aprons. The menu was also very typical for a French bistro: escargot, frog legs, onion soup, etc…
We ordered a bottle of wine, a Bordeaux of course, and I had the escargot. I found the service to be delightful and timely and the quality of the food was excellent and fairly priced. I would definitely recommend this place to a friend and would definitely go back when I’m in Paris — the ultimate compliment for a restaurant owner.

What a disappointment! Having frequented Chez André on a regular basis during the late 1990s-​early 2000s, we expected to enjoy a delicious, nostalgic meal. After all, in Paris, you are able to walk into virtually any neighborhood brasserie or bistro and discover culinary excellence in the most ordinary of dishes.
However, this was not the case at Chez André on a Saturday night in April. We were corralled to the «American section,» where we were handed pedestrian menus in English (in spite of our capable French). The service was poor, as there was only one waitress assigned to the entire front room, and the food was nearly inedible. From the bone-​filled bouillabaisse and dry chicken to the overcooked steak and undercooked «frites,» nothing looked or tasted appealing. We didn’t even make it to dessert, as several people at our table vacated, in favor of a moules et frites chain restaurant on the nearby Champs Elysées (which, incidentally, was excellent).
The following day, we learned from locals that there had been a change in management years ago, creating such a perceptible decline that none of them had returned to Chez André since!

I had dinner here with a colleague about 3 months ago and it was very good. We didn’t have a reservation. They accommodated us but we had to be out within a hour which was fine with us given we were both jet lagged. Even though we were out within a hour, we did not feel rushed. Service and food were very good. I would go back again.

Civilized, crowded, cheerful, and authentic local experience. Close to George V and Plaza Athenee in the Eighth. We could have walked from the Meurice in the First, but a taxi is only 5 minutes. Not for the uninitiated, pretentious or insecure. Oysters, white tablecloths, Dover sole, chateaubriand steak frites. Individually owned. Could not disagree more with the haters.

This place is highly recommended by the hotel concierge and it didn’t disappoint us. My duck was cooked to perfection and the server is very friendly and efficient.

As a tourist, I came here based on a recommendation from a French friend. On a Saturday night around 7 PM, it was busy but we got a table for two Service was swift and efficient. The portions were huge! The oysters were prepared outside on the street, which is an interesting touch. My beef tartare was far more than I could eat.
It seems like a lot of locals dine here. Tables are close to each other… it’s not for those seeking privacy.
Everyone was nice enough.

Deuxième fois que je me rends dans cet établissement et toujours aussi ravis! Nous sommes en décembre et pourtant j’ai bel et bien mangé en terrasse et sans ma veste qui plus est! Chaque table est chauffée individuellement. C’est magique!
Je voulais manger une soupe à l’oignon près des Champs Elysée et je n’ai pas été déçu. Les prix sont tout à fait corrects, le personnel au petits soins et les plats délicieux. Je recommande cet établissement encore et encore!

Wow. I can’t describe in mere words how bad this experience was. The concierge at the hotel recommended it and booked it for us. They slammed us into a table that we couldn’t get in or out of without literally moving the table 8 feet. Horrible service. Took them 35 minutes to take our drink order. Then one of the appetizers arrived before the wine. The other almost 10 minutes later. Over salted food. Steak tartare was filled with mustard and basically inedible. French fries tasted like old oil. Place was filled with tourists all of whom probably got the same recommendations I did. Don’t bother!

Staff was very rude and unfriendly towards foreigners.
Made us feel unwelcome and we left fairly quick. As if we were begging for money. Totally uncool

Like another Unilocaler, my first meal in Paris was at Chez André. I didn’t have a reservation, but the host, who was a teeny bit gruff at first (aka Parisian), asked if I could wait for fifteen minutes, and then he would seat me. I was traveling by myself, and I suddenly had a warm feeling, like my ‘dad’ was looking after me. The wait was about ten minutes, and I was seated, elbow-​to-​elbow in their relatively small dining room. The place was hopping! Service was not terribly fast, but you could tell that they all knew what they were doing. I thought the prices were reasonable, especially considering the neighborhood. I got the traditional onion soup (omg…yum), and the chicken with frites, which was good. Not great, but good. Overall, I had a really good experience here.

We were told about this by friends. It is in a great area and the prices are ok but the food was simply boring and bland. The half chicken was no better than what one could get in a NY diner. The service was gruff and distracted. How this place keeps such a reputaion is beyond me.

Pretty solid. Nice French onion soup. Had the avocado salad… Nice as well. Good wine and atmosphere. Sat outside on a rainy night which made it very nice.

If you are ever in Paris you have to eat here please the staff astounding. The food fantastic!

There will never be another restaurant that I go to that will compare to this place, of that I am sure. I came here with my best friend during our last night in Paris, and I practically cried after our meal because I was so sad it was over. From the first course to the last, this place was 5 stars, hands down. I want to go back to Paris just so I can come back here!

Ooh la la… I enjoyed my meal there. Chez Andre is a bit off the beaten path but was a pleasant find for us.
I usually search Unilocal for recommendations before trying a new spot but reading the reviews for this spot is a good example of why that isn’t always the best idea. Had I seen these reviews I probably would have passed and would have missed what I thought was a solid meal.
I had the steak with frites and my girlfriend had the duck breast. Both were pretty delicious. I found the waitress to be pretty accommodating

Unfortunately I did not enjoy my experience at Chez Andre. The food and service was okay but not good/​great and not worth 81 €. My wife loved her sole meunière which is the only reason I’m adding a second star (I tried it… it was okay, again not good or great). I had the leg of lamb «Allaiton de l’Aveyron» with confit coco beans which is one of their specials. I found the lamb overcooked and tough in texture. I did not finish the beans as I found it unsatisfying and too large of a portion compared to the small portion of lamb. Perhaps I came at a bad day but I won’t go back for a second time.

Enjoyed this restaurant. The host was very friendly, the food and dessert were very tasty. I had duck and roasted potatoes (Monday nights special). Not pricey!

Je connais «Chez André» depuis toujours mais étrangement je n’y étais jamais allée. Voilà qui est chose faite ce soir.
Nous y sommes allées sans avoir réservé mais comme il n’était que 20h nous avons eu la chance de pouvoir etre reçues sans attente.
Pour commencer on sent immédiatement que l’on se trouve dans une institution. Le restaurant est déjà bien rempli par de nombreux habitués et bien l’on vienne pour la 1ère fois on nous accueille très chaleureusement.
Il y a une sacrée brigade et tout le monde semble être très pro.
Nos choix ont été les suivants :
Terrine de campagne. Servie dans sa terrine individuelle, elle est généreuse et riche en goût. Pot de cornichons à côté et pains variés croustillants comme il le faut.
Salade de lentilles: parfaitement assaisonnée et copieuse.
Nous avons enchaîné avec le plat du jour à savoir, hachis Parmentier/​salade et le cabillaud accompagne de haricots cocos.
Tout était parfaitement bon et servi de façon généreuse.
Pas de dessert ce soir mais évidemment un café avant de quitter les lieux.
En conclusion, service agréable et efficace, plats riches en goûts et servis généreusement. Quartier on né peut plus central mais a l’écart de l’animation des Champs, tous les ingrédients pour garder un bon souvenir et l’envie de revenir.

One of the great things about Paris is that you can wander into just about any corner bistro and have a decent meal for a reasonable price. So when I wandered into Chez Andre, a classic French bistro, I was expecting a pretty decent meal.
Malheureusement, this was not the case. This is actually probably one of the worst meals I have ever had in Paris.
I started with the endive, which was barely dressed and was badly under salted. Very bad first sign. Next came the duck breast with pears, which was very under cooked and, largely as a result, had a massive slab of undercooked duck fat sitting on the top. It frankly was barely edible. Finally, I tried the millefeuille, hoping to end on a high note. Alas, it was not to be. It tasted like a premade millefeuille, brought in from somewhere else, with soggy layers between the cream. Disastrous!
Do yourself a favor, go somewhere else, Paris is full of good restaurants. This just isn’t one of them.

The chicken is one of the specialties and it was at least a day old, the bread was stale and the service was non-​existent. We ordered a chateaubriand medium and it came out raw.

AMERICANS AVOID: My family and I are upper middle class Americans on vacation across Europe. None of us speak more than a handful of French words combined but we try our best to communicate. The owner or manager took absolute advantage of the language gap even though he spoke English well. We paid € 5,80 for WATER when we expected tap water like everyone else and € 28,00 for «the house wine.» There was very limited space and a coat check but we were not offered the coat check. We ordered 3 low end appetizers and wine and it came out to € 55,90. The food was pleasant but the service as an American family trying our best was terrible. We know Americans can be rude but we were trying to reverse the stereotype.

This traditional French Bistro has all the trappings. Tables are small and close to each other. Service is attentive and designed to turn the tables. The food is excellent.
We started with snails and French onion soup. The French do these right and Chez Andres performed.
For entrees (main course to us Americans) we enjoyed duck breast and lamb. This is why we come to Paris for food. This is the culinary part we never forget.
Paris has many great cafés and bistros. We have become spoiled by the ones who really get the food and service. And where the locals are part of the fabric of the scene.
I suppose some would complain about being so close to other tables. Or to the style of service. But this is what we love. And the food frosts this cake.

Ein typisch französisches Lokal, halt Brasserie. Draußen wewrden schalentiere geputzt und zubereitet, drinnen geht es gemütlich, trotzd er Lautstärke zu.
Speisen sehr französisch und leicht überteuert, aber was will man erwarten mitten in Paris in einem der teuersten Viertel.
Speisen sonst lecker, wenn auch nicht besonders ausgefallen. Eine Fischsuppe für 30 Euro hatte ich auf der Tageskarte gesehen, das ist dann doch etwas übertrieben.
Insgesamt aber leckerer Wein, flotter Service (kaum englisch) und volle Mägen.

My first meal in paris was at Chez Andre and it was a good start. The wonderful lady who helped me was very patient. She suggested a great red wine for 26 euros.
My starter of endive and roquefort was awesome… tons of wonderful smelly cheese.
I loved my chicken with pomme fritte. Chicken tastes different in paris. Perhaps it is not fed growth hormones, antibiotics, and not corn feed. But the meat of the chicken was just wonderful. The fries were okay but not special.
For dessert the classic crème brule was nice.
If you are staying in this neighborhood or near by I would recommend this place. It is not a special place but they do have charm and what they do they do very well.

Sur la porte du restaurant: Chez André depuis 1936… «Cuisine bourgeoise»
Invitée ce jour là je n’avais pas encore osé passer la porte de cet établissement quasi historique.
Nous étions en terrasse pour profiter des rayons du soleil de fin septembre.
Le service était efficace.
Dans les entrées testées par mes collègues et moi: salade de lentilles verte du Puy, vinaigrette moutardée à 6,60 euros, le plat de girolles sautées (extra) mais plus cher.
En plat: énorme foie de veau pour les fans, cuisses de grenouilles au beurre et à l’ail (une des spécialités du resto), coquilles st-​jacques, magret de canard et tartare pour moi (les frites auraient pu être meilleures).
Les plats vont de 15 à 30 euros. Ils sont très bien servis.
Du coup, plus de place pour le dessert.
Le café gourmand propose une glacé à la vanille extra, une mini mousse au chocolat qui donne envie de manger le pot.
Chaque jour le chef propose ses spécialités comme la bouillabaisse du Chef, le gigot d’agneau «Allaiton de l’Aveyron «sans oublier les fruits de mer.
Le plus: la sélection des vins au verre et le vin du mois.
Ouvert 7 jours sur 7, de midi à 1h du matin, bon plan pour dîner dans le triangle d’or après une certaine heure et éviter les restos des Champs Elysées un peu «arnaques pour touristes».
Le petit bémol: la salle intérieure est très bruyante d’après les habitués.

Dans une ambiance bistrot de qualité, la cuisine est traditionnelle mais bonne. Les plats sont copieux.
Le service est agréable malgrès que le restaurant soit plein à craqué. (sourire et petites blagues au rendez-​vous)

Touristenfalle! Hatten uns von den vielen guten Bewertungen blenden lassen, aber das Essen war das Schlechteste, was wir in Paris bisher gegessen hatten. Das Huhn schlecht gebraten, die 6 Schnecken als Vorspeise eher mittelmäßig. Leider ungemütlicher Platz am Durchgang für den ebenso mittelmäßigen Service. Zwei halbe Hähnchen, zwei mittelmäßige Vorspeisen und 2 Tonic– das Ganze für 79 Euro. Da soll einer noch sagen, das Oktoberfest sei teuer

Surprisingly good food. For starters we had tomato and mozzarella salad and the foie Gras terrine with sea salt and onion chutney. The tomatoes were fresh as was the mozzarella cheese.
Duck foie gras was nice and not too heavy.
For main we had sole and chateaubriand. The sole was fresh and nicely done.
Meat was cooked medium to perfection, the sauce bernaise nicely flavored. Good value for money.

L’été 2012 on a mangé dehors sur le trottoir. Mars 2013 on a mangé à l’intérieur. A chaque fois tout est bon de l’accueil jusqu’à l’addition. Ce n’est pas donné, mais la qualité a un prix. Je sais que c’est une adresse/​table sur laquelle je peux compter.

Dans ce cadre sympathique d’authentique bistrot parisien, nous avons été très agréablement accueillis.
Mon foie de veau était réellement délicieux ! Je me suis régalée… Cependant, mon ami, qui avait opté pour le gigot d’agneau a été très déçu ! Peu de saveur, la tranche rose pâle présentée à plat… Ca semblait bien fade au premier abord, et cela le fut ! Pourtant, ce plat lui avait été conseillé en tant que spécialité de la maison…
Pour finir, de bons desserts ! Une île flottante au goût de l’un, un baba au goût de l’autre, et un crumble aux fraise à mon goût à moi !
Nous nous en allâmes tout de mêmes contents.

Personnel très sympa…
Soirée très sympa entre amis dans cette brasserie… Service parfait avec un personnel aux petits soins, la nourriture est bonne, asperges blanches mousselines, gigot un peu cuit même si je l’ai demandé saignant… Dommage, carte des vins très bien. Brasserie comme je les aime.

Chez André… Une bonne brasserie parisienne…
C’est en effet la définition la plus simple qu’on pourrait en donner.
L’endroit est sympathique, avec un cadre convivial, et le service est aussi efficace qu’attentionné. Quant aux plats, ils sont généralement très bons, et chacun peut y trouver son compte.
Cependant, car rien n’est jamais parfait, on note plusieurs défauts à cette adresse tant prisée :
— tout y reste très cher ;
— aucun plat né présente une quelconque originalité ;
— les portions né sont pas très copieuses, ce qui est pour le moins étonnant pour une brasserie qui se veut typique.
Et c’est précisément ici que se trouve la grande faille: Chez André, on pense que l’on est dans une grande brasserie, alors qu’en fait il s’agit simplement d’une bonne brasserie de quartier.
Pour cela, il suffit de regarder autour de vous: on a soit des touristes soit des bandes de jeunes en costumes, qui sortent généralement des bureaux. Bref, l’endroit correspond parfaitement au touriste de passage ou au jeune consultant/​auditeur: les deux seules espèces de personne qui peuvent se targuer d’aller dans «une brasserie typique» pour commencer le dîner avec du foie gras et finalement prendre comme plat un cheeseburger…
Car c’est çà la grande réalité de l’endroit: le cheeseburger (pas mauvais d’ailleurs) y est assurément un des plats les plus commandés… ça en dit long sur le côté «typique» de la brasserie, dont les prix né cessent d’augmenter.

Bar en zinc, miroirs, tables bistrot, banquettes de cuir rouge et nappes blanches: ce bistrot bourgeois fait souvent salle comble. Pourquoi? Tout simplement parce que c’est bon: ici, on vient pour apprécier les plats de la vraie cuisine bourgeoise.
En entrée… Fruits de mer, salade d’endives au Roquefort, gros escargots de Bourgogne, foie gras de canard au naturel et chutney de fruits, et tartare de saumon aux herbes fines… Vous en voulez encore?
En plat de résistance… Noix de St Jacques à la planche flanquée d’un risotto crémeux, cuisses de grenouilles sautées à la provençale, filet de bar, tartare de viande, gigot d’agneau de l’Aveyron…
Bien sûr, c’est un peu cher. Mais ça vaut vraiment le coup d’y aller pour né serait-​ce pour dire un jour: j’y étais.

Pour diner dans le quartier des Champs-​Elysées, le choix est assez large mais pour trouver une bonne brasserie, alors là, plus d’hésitation possible, je vais Chez André. L’accueil y est chaleureux vraiment comme si vous alliez diner chez votre ami «André «.
C’est une très bonne adresse lorsque vous sortez et que l’un a envie d’huitres, l’autre de poisson et le dernier de bœuf; tous les produits sont frais et préparé avec simplicité.
Mon repas idéal: les escargots de Bourgogne pour commencer, et selon mon appétit, la sole meunière ou le Châteaubriant.
Les plats du jour ont aussi beaucoup de succès, c’est d’ailleurs pour ça que j’évite d’y aller le jeudi, les rognons de veau qui s’alignent sur presque toutes les tables et moi, je défailli.

Gibt es.
Ich war vorletzte Woche — allerdings in Begleitung einer charmanten Französin — da und war absolut erstaunt.
Das Entrecôte: groß und wunderbar.
Die Crême Brulée: So, wie sie sein soll. Der Wein (offen): Richtig gut.
Vor allem die Bedienung, ich glaube sie heißt Eveline, war super super nett. Klasse.
Wer mag bekommt natürlich auch Austern, Foie Gras, Poulet, Terrine und so weiter. Französische Küche halt.

Rien d’exceptionnel
Cet restau-​brasserie est peut-​être une institution depuis 1936, elle manqué franchement de caractère. On mange bien (sans plus) certes, mais dans une salle bruyante et enfumée, dans un décor fade voire stérile, et sur des tables entassées entre lesquelles il faut manoeuvrer pour s’asseoir. Le menu né propose que des classiques, de l’entrecôte au plateau de fruits de mer en passant par le tartare. Rien de créatif. Les prix né sont pas astronomiques mais un peu excessifs: clairement on paye plus pour la localisation que pour la qualité. En revanche, le service est excellent. Notons qu’à 23h passées, la clientèle reste quasi exclusivement composée d’hommes d’affaires. Moralité: pour discuter d’un contrat oui, pour un dîner sympa entre amis ou en amoureux surtout pas.

Sortie du théatre…
Le bon côté de chez André est que rien né change et que ça fixe des repères rassurants dans ce monde moderne… La carte (toujours la même) propose un vaste choix de coquillages, viandes, poissons dans la pure veine des meilleurs brasseries parisiennes. Les assiettes sont copieuses, la qualité est excellente. Le service pas très fin mais super efficace permet de gérer une salle souvent bondée d’une clientèle à la fois locale et étrangère, assise à touché-​touché, et donc qui parle fort, et assure une ambiance très sympa. Le mauvais côté de chez André est que rien né change… que la déco est pas gégé (comparé à d’autres brasseries) mais que comme on a dit que c’était aussi un bon côté… Les prix sont un peu élevés, mais c’est pas vraiment volé !

Trop classique, quel dommage…
Il n’y a jamais de recherché, d’inventivité ou d’originalité dans aucune brasserie. C’est bien dommage. Celle-​ci né dénote pas dans le paysage parisien, c’est comme d’hab. A côté des Champs, c’est pas donné, loyer oblige. Mais à bien y réfléchir, on doit pouvoir trouver plus personnalisé et plus goûteux.

Miam miam
Encore une excellente brasserie parisienne ! Je suis fan on mange vraiment bien, le service et l’accueil est parfait. Je vous conseille le poisson (spécialité) excellent. Né dispose pas du service voiturier ce qui est gênant vue le quartier (en face de l’entrecôte pour les connaisseurs) mais c’est vraiment bon et sympa allez en petit groupe mais pensez à réserver le week-​end sinon il faudra attendre.

Une vraie brasserie de qualité
La décoration est sobre mais conforme à une vraie bonne brasserie parisienne, les viandes sont d’excellente qualité, la carte suffisamment variée pour satisfaire tous les appétits, et le service aux petits oignons. Je recommande tout particulièrement la terrasse en été, qui est plutôt calme et très agréable. Impression curieuse, toutefois: on se croirait dans un restaurant français de NYC à force d’entendre des Américains autour de soi. Mais ça né m’a pas gêné du tout au conrtaire :-) Excellents desserts.
