Although the food and service at La Rose de France was good, our recent experience there last week was very upsetting. My husband, my daughter who is fluent in French, and her husband(and baby) and myself ordered four«fixed price» meals. As soon as we sat down at the table, my daughter requested in French«ordinary tap water» from the female Maitre ‘D. During the meal, we requested three more bottles of tap water. When the bill arrived, we were shocked. There was a charge of $ 30 for the water, and 2 of the 4 meals were charged«a la carte» prices instead of «fixed price» which inflated the bill another few euros. When my daughter questioned the charge for water, even before she had a chance to point out the difference between the«fixed price» and«a la carte» prices, the waitress returned with the Maitre ‘D who refused to drop the water charge. She insisted the restaurant did not provide«regular» water, only bottled water for a price although WEWERENEVERTOLDTHIS. Furthermore, it is very suspicious since we have never encountered such a practice in any restaurant in Paris before. The discussion in French between my daughter and the manager became increasingly heated. Our daughter, in an aside to us, explained that we were being taken advantage of because we were foreigners, and having worked in Paris for nine wonderful summers, she was especially outraged. Finally, she told me to put away my credit card and left the exact amount of euros for the bill, minus the charge for the water.(By this time, she choose to ignore the inflated price of the two meals since it amounted to roughly $ 7.00.) As we arose from the table, the manager came running over and she and my daughter resumed their argument over the water charge. Finally my daughter insisted that the manager call the police but the manager refused.(Maybe because it would be immediately obvious that the bill was inflated over the«fixed price» menu as well as or because tourists had previously complained about unfair prices.) At this point, the manager swore at my daughter, threatening to shove a bottle of water up her rear end! The purpose of this review? Skip this restaurant if you want to avoid a nasty confrontation if your bill is inflated… as it very well could be.

So, while in Paris for a few days prior to a conference in London, I mostly ate at pay at the counter places, mostly cause I was alone, and was very self conscience about my ability to speak french. At café, you can basically get away with pointing at something in case the person doesn’t speak english. Since I did want to have at least one sit down meal, I decided on lunch at La Rose de France which is near Notre Dame. Just to make sure I wasn’t embarrassed, I made a reservation online. I had practiced the phrase«I have a reservation» many times and was feeling confident. I showed up after hours touring Notre Dame and much of Île de la Cité. I entered the restaurant and approached the hostess repeating my phrase. She stared at me and asked me to repeat myself, so I did, twice. She looked puzzled and I started to panic! Did she not understand my french? She asked me a few more questions in french and I struggled to answer them. After a few attempts, she switched to english. Her confusion was not one of misunderstanding what I was saying, but why on earth I would make a reservation for one person. I guess this doesn’t happen, like ever. After the initial awkwardness, she explained there was no reservation for me, but they would bump me up to next on the list. There is some lovely outdoor seating here and I asked if I could sit outside. She said it would take much longer, but I said I was willing to wait. I sat on a little bench in the square and she had one of the waiters bring me a complimentary glass of house red wine. It was lovely. After awhile I was finally seated outside and my waiter came by and ordered in broken french. He again switched to english. Although everyone around me seemed to be eating the Nicoise salad, which did look amazing, I didn’t want my one sit down meal to be a salad. I ordered the duck confit, which was a special for the day as well as dauphinoise potatoes. It was a little heavy for lunch, but it was amazing. I think I also got the french onion soup. I ended up taking half of my meal home. This is a great place for people watching. It in is in a somewhat secluded square with a few other restaurants. Although I imagine many tourists were there, most of the tables around me were french speaking. The food was solid, the staff were kind to me, and it is in a beautiful location. What more can you ask for?!

A big disappointment after reading the reviews here on Unilocal. Appetizers were ok, but tasteless. Their reconstructed french onion soup, for example, looked very nice, but had no flavor. The main plates were even worse. I had their pork, my lady had their cod. Both had no flavor whatsoever. We each tried to add salt and pepper in a vain attempt to get some flavor in the dishes. In addition, the pork might have been the toughest I’ve ever had. Neither of us bothered to finish our plates. While we ate, a number of the staff sat near us and smoked cigarettes. Mmmm, that really added to our enjoyment of the meal. Not. A really big disappointment. The desserts were the best part of the meal. Summary: great location, terrible food.

If you’re looking for a lovely small restaurant with great service and great food in a fantastic setting, This is one of those rare finds that you thank your lucky stars for. From the friendly, warm greeting and an amuse Bouche of perfectly prepared salmon tartare, gently resting stop with a light cream base followed delicately seared scallops on a bed of lentils with a complex, well developed broth that just begged to be sopped up with some of the best bread I’ve had in Paris. I loved the dessert, crunchy bottom layer, smooth chocolate, then another tier of dark chocolate that held a vanilla cream, topped with another tier of dark chocolate. All the best quality, smooth as silk. So, I liked it so much, I asked about the young chef who I got a few glimpses of, Alexandre, who no doubt will be winning awards in the future. This was so delicious, I came back a few days later, ordered all new dishes and they were just as great.

We were visiting Notre Dame Cathedral and St Chapelle. For lunch, we stopped at La Rose de France. First, it is a charming little square– Place Dauphine. So we sat outside and people-watched. The proprietors were very cordial and between our little French and their(better) English, we ordered boeuf bourginoigne and a leg of lamb. The portions were quite large and the food was excellent. It was a great experience all the way around.

This restaurant is across the street from an apartment we rent. It is on a small, traffic-less triangle park that is delightful in warmer weather. Wonderful Parisien menu at reasonable prices. Food is very well prepared and presented. Great for lunch or dinner. Friendly service. You will not be disappointed.

Our lunch at La Rose de France was absolutely amazing. The food was a little pricey, but worth every last delicious bite! La Rose de France is located on the Île de la Cité in Paris(the little historic island). The restaurant is only a five minute walk fro the Saint Chapelle Church so we decided to have lunch here before we visited the church. This is one of the meals I had planned on splurging on. I was a little nervous that the service might be snooty since we don’t speak French, but our waitress was the complete opposite — so nice and genuinely friendly! Even though the menu was in English and French she made an effort to point out all of her favorite items on the menu. We started off our meal with a bottle of Cabernet wine and the mi-cuit of foie gras with mango chutney. This appetizer was«eyes-roll-in-the-back-of-my-head» good!!! I could have ate just this duck pâté and toasted baguette as my lunch… it was just that good! My husband ordered a plate of assorted cheeses, my sister order the duck special of the day and I ordered the La Dauphine salad. The La Dauphine salad was the best salad I have ever eaten. It was a simple arugula and endive salad with olives, Parmesan, prosciutto, and a baguette with tapenade. I stole bites off of my husband’s and sister’s plates and everything was so divine, so French, and so perfect! If you are looking for the perfect French meal look no further!

So pleasant, quiet, tucked away from the fray. Nice wines well priced and friendly service. Perfect place to transition afternoon into evening. As Buffett said: Warm summer breezes and French wines and cheeses, kept my ambition at bay…

I think we found this place on Unilocal– We loved this place. It was off the beaten path and not super busy and crazy like the Latin Quarter. We had the Nicoise Salad– big enough to share for two and the planche charcuterie. It was perfect for lunch and we sat outside and the waitress was super pleasant. It was a mix of french and tourists. We split a bottle of Rose.

Escargot here is AMAZING. My 8 year old loved it. I think it has more to do with the marinate, but it doesn’t matter. Ordered beef with the sauce for the veal. Great combo!!! Pumpkin soup has a blue type of cheese in it, not the best for my husband. Loved my biquette salad. Huge! Fabulous. The french fries are home made and great. The Chablis complimented the salad well.

Have eaten several petit dejeuners here(the l’anglais version with omelette mixte) and it’s just lovely. The service is friendly, patient with pidgin French-speakers, and just attentive enough; the food is divine. The atmosphere in the mornings has been quiet, with familiar jazz(Fitzgerald, Torme, Armstrong) tinkling through the sound system and table both in and outside are comfortable. Can’t say enough how nice it was to have a friendly, reliable place to have breakfast and it’s on the divine Île de la Cité which is a little slice of heaven, in my opinion. The view from the café is of the Place de Dauphine, a perfectly French, manicured and lovely open park. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend La Rose de France – and I hope I’ll be back there soon.

We had read good things about La Rose on TripAdvisor prior to our vacation, so we added it to our list of places we should check out in Paris. I’m glad we did, as it became one of our favorite places to visit! We had two meals at La Rose, and also stopped in after a busy day of sightseeing for a couple of glasses of wine. Each time, we were lucky enough to sit outside, and we soaked up the quiet atmosphere of the Ile de la Cite. La Rose is located in a more residential area, and doesn’t get a lot of traffic from tourists or vehicles, which is really nice. You feel tucked away in a more intimate setting, where only those«in the know»(or who read review sites) know where to venture. The patrons seemed to be a good mix of locals and tourists. The servers at La Rose de France are friendly, and all of the ones we came into contact with not only spoke English(some spoke a bit more than others), but were also very patient with our attempts at French. So, the wine list was good(they had an excellent Beaujolais), but the star here(aside from the atmosphere) is the food. They offer a specially priced lunch or dinner menu where you can get a mix of items(ie: a starter, main, and coffee, a main, dessert and coffee, a starter, main, dessert, and coffee) for a set price, which is a pretty good deal. Both times we ate here I started with the escargot, which are to DIE for. Seriously, they’re so good, and the wine/butter/garlic/herb sauce they’re cooked in is divine with the baguette they provide for dipping purposes. Even if you don’t think you like escargot, I suggest you try it here. You might be surprised. I also had the salad with warm goat cheese, apples, and pine nuts. Again, it was awesome. I had been craving veggies, and that salad took care of all of my needs. My husband started each meal with the traditional plate, which was a big hit with him, and he especially liked the ham. For dinner, he had the duck, which he absolutely loved, and had the special of the day for lunch, which I believe was a lamb dish. He liked his lunch well enough, but somewhat regretted not getting the rump steak after seeing it delivered to another table. Honestly, though, I don’t think you could really go wrong with much of the menu. We did split a dessert once, which was the tarte tatin of the day(apple), and it was also tasty, even though we were pretty full. The coffee(espresso) is served with a little chocolate chip cookie, which is a nice way to finish the meal. La Rose is fairly small, so you’ll want to arrive early or make a reservation for dinner, but you’ll be glad that you did. It’s a wonderful place to have a good French meal in a lovely setting.

This is my favourite recommendation to people visiting Paris for a lunch spot whilst walking the Louvre, Ile de la Cite and Notre Dame. The Place Dauphine is a quiet 14th century square with a few restaurants and this one is the pick of the bunch. Especially because it’s terrace is in the sunshine at lunchtime! The menu is reasonably priced with all you need for lunch including the gigantic and delicious salads. A good french wine to go with that and you are set for a good restorative long lunch between all the sightseeing.
