On y reviendra!

THIS is Paris. We came here on our second night in Paris because it was so close to the hotel, and ended up coming back on our last night. Between the funny and kind staff, who clearly love what they do, the amazing food and changing menu, to the atmosphere, this place is a 10. Foie gras: A+ we dream about it to this day and it is incomparable. Gespacho: A+ Just the right amount of kick and acidity, balanced with just enough spice Quiche:A+ Beef: A+ Pork spare ribs: A+ Wine & Truffle chocolate on the side: A+ They can do no wrong. A must-taste.

This restaurant is excellent with the food being as good as the service! And as former restaurant people, we are VERY picky and used to being disappointed. Fortunately, everything was perfect from beginning to end. My husband and I wanted to celebrate our 20th anniversary but had not made any reservations anywhere but hoped to eat here due to the excellent reviews and it was only a few blocks from our apartment rental. We arrived probably around 7:30pm on a Thursday night and when we asked the maitre’d for a table, he said it would be an hour and a half wait. We were a little tired and told the maitre’d that it was our 20th anniversary so he sat us at the bar with a little snack and the house cocktail, and said he would see what he could do. Luckily, he came back in 20 minutes and had a table ready for us! When we sat down at the table, we were each treated with a small glass of champagne. We both ordered foie gras(because now that it is illegal in California, of course we want it whenever we can have it) which was delicious. We ate most of it before I realized I wanted a picture;-) My husband had the sweetbreads with mushrooms and cream sauce and I had the filet mignon with onion compot and potatoes. Both were incredible. My filet was in the shape of a heart which was so cute! We also ordered a demi bottle of wine, 2009 Santenay 1er Cru and that was also excellent. For dessert we shared a crème brulee garnished with a Calvados/apple compote and they added a little candle. Definitely in the top of my restaurant experiences and I would strongly urge anyone who visits to Paris to come here for dinner. You won’t be disappointed!

This place is what Paris is all about! From start to finish this place was perfect, and really made Paris that much more special for us. We even came back on our last night in Paris because we didn’t want to leave without having this place one last time. The interior here is nice and romantic but at the same time very homey and traditional. The service was superb and our waiter was very nice and made us feel right at home. The owner came out a few times to make sure all the tables were happy, which really added to the great service. We knew very little French and after spending the night before translating the menu, I was happy to learn when we got here the menu had English translations. Our waiter paired a great wine for our meal and really helped bring it all together. We ordered the prefix as opposed to a la carte as per some other suggestions we read, the prices here in general were really a bang for your buck considering the quality of service and food this place provides. –The gazpacho was the best I have ever had, and really took both my gf and I by surprise. Just the right amount of kick and acidity, balanced with just enough spice. –The Foie Gras was absolute perfection here, melt in your mouth, sweet and savory. –The pork ribs and rice were both very good. –The steak with potato was cooked perfectly and the mushroom sauce was mouth watering. –The caramel rice pudding here is a must –And as with all places in Paris they give you a treat with your espresso, and here they give you some damn good truffle chocolate on the side. Really can’t say enough about this place, it’s a worthwhile stop in Paris, and will be my first next time I am back.

This was our first night out in Paris and we weren’t disappointed. This restaurant is a cosy intimate venue offering attentive and friendly service paired with incredible food and wine. we took advantage of the 3 course for 33 Euros special. I had the quiche, beef filet and the rice pudding with Caramel and my partner had Soup de jour(pea and bacon), the Pork and finally the black Chocolate Mousse. Every single dish was delicious and cooked perfectly. Portion sizes were generous to the point that we couldn’t finish our mains! I had heard that when in France, if you don’t speak french you can often encounter rude service, our waiter in Le Gastroquet was very accommodating and put up with my bad broken french and was quite happy to speak english when i didn’t understand what he was asking. This place is an absolute gem and we will be back as soon as we can get back to Paris!

Gastronomical Delight in Paris Visit: March 30, 2011 My Husband, Andy, has an annual conference in Paris so I tag along when possible. Lucky me! So I’ve been to Paris twice in the last 3 years. Just for the record, j’aime Paris(I love Paris!). One of the many things I love about Paris is THEFOOD! Parisians take food seriously as well as the whole dining experience. I’ve never had a bad meal in Paris but some have been better than others and my meal at Le Gastroquet was the BEST. We took the subway to the nearest metro stop and walked 2 blocks to the restaurant. The bistro is located on a narrow side street that runs at a diagonal from the Rue de Vaugirard. We were warmly and enthusiastically greeted when we walked in the door. Our coats were quickly risked away to be stowed some where in the back. Most French restaurants will check your coat to provide you with more comfort and due to the lack of space to hang a bulky jacket on your seat. We were promptly shown to our table by the window. Our waiter had to pull the table out so that I could reach by seat, which is standard practice because there is not sufficient room to walk between tables. Even though you are sitting practically elbow-to-elbow, you do not hear your fellow patrons’ conversation since Europeans speak in softer voices. While we were deciding on our meal, we ordered an apértif, a glass of ‘house’ champagne. The sparkling wine was delicious with a bright acidity, citrus and peach tones, and low minerality. The wine list is extensive and high-end so the prices reflect the quality. Since I wished to drink a white wine and Andy wanted a red wine with our meals, we decided to order wines by the glass, which was a less expensive option. We asked our server to pair the wines with our food and were greatly pleased the wines. The menu features many items you may order a la carte and they offer a 3 course meal for 29 € and a 7 course meal for 59 €. We chose the 3 course meal which we thought was a great deal since most of the meat and fish dishes were about 29 €. My first course was a cold salad of crabmeat layered with finely chopped grapefruit. The tartness of the grapefruit was mellow and highlighted the innate richness of the crab. My second course was a white fish is a cream sauce. To just say a cream sauce is such an understatement… this sauce was heavenly. Ya know the kind that makes you want to lick the plate. I used the crusty French baguette to soak up every single drop of the sauce. I wasn’t going to let any of that sauce go to waste. Just when I thought the meal couldn’t get any better, my dessert was served… a mousse with red berries resting in a lake of another stellar sauce. It was bursting with sweetness but tempered with a little sourness and added an amazing contrast to the smooth and creamy mousse. I had to restrain myself from licking the plate so I used a spoon to scoop up as much of the sauce as I could. My husband enjoyed his dessert and the glass of port he ordered to accompany it. The wait staff were extremely helpful and friendly. Monsieur Bulot, the jovial owner and dressed all in chef’s white, stopped by our table to inquire about our meal. Since the restaurant is small, is very popular with the locals, and close to the convention center, reservations are highly recommended. Le Gastroquet has successfully mastered the art and science of good eating. I can’t wait to go back the next time I visit Paris.
