Johnston’s Pharmacy is located in the heart of Ranelagh Village next to the popular Redmond’s off license and winery. In the same vein as many outlets in Ranelagh, it is victim to the same pomp and circumstance that many other shops suffer from — that which sees them ostensibly appear to be leaders in their field owing solely to more fancy exteriors, interiors and generally more luxurious(or so they would like to think) auras about them. Outlets such as this appear to be more snobbish in order to correspond better with the general vibe of the village however when it comes down to the fundamentals of quality of goods and value for money they disappoint, disastrously so. Johnston’s can be seen as a bit of supercilious store — a bit pompous and in existence to provide for the more haughty Ranelagh residents, but this certainly does not reflect in its attention to customer service nor variety of stock and I can confidently say that pharmacies closer to town and even the everyday man’s Boots provide a much more ample and wide-ranging shopping experience. This chemist is nothing more than contentedly average with a run of the mill pharmacy and regular cosmetics section. As it is located just across from my house I have relied on it in the past to grab some essentials but every time have been left to feel dissatisfied and disappointed by their lack of range and large quantity and hence usually just end up waiting and picking up what I need when I get into town. This of course defeats the objective of a local, community chemist, but as much as I would like to embrace this local business I am left with no other choice than to hold off and wait until I get to one of the big-wigs owing to their small and not necessarily very good stockpile. At the end of the day if they don’t sell the basics that I need to get by then what use are they. Their expensive parquet flooring only gets them so far, if anywhere.
