Have you ever heard the term in HR of a shit sandwich? Well anyone who’s worked in a corporate environment has inevitably been dealt one at one time or another. Well today Munchies, Baggott Street, dealt me just that; and it certainly wasn’t a sandwich like Mammy used to make! Munchies are one of my favourite lunch spots! They are a franchise based around Dublin, so I’m sure there is one near you. My number one sambo there is the Chicken Whoopie, I think they are kind of famous or something… My second is the Falafel Whoopie on a wrap which is super tasty. The best stores are down in the IFSC near where I used to work the tiny one near the Harbourmaster is the best — but a newer shop opened near Mayor square last year and it’s handy due to the fact it has seating. The owner’s daughter was even kind enough to sponsor food for our film shoot a couple of years ago — so shout out to Chloe for that! Thank you, we will forever be in your debt! My next choice after the IFSC would have to be Dawson Street; this little shop also has exemplary service but is a little bit far when you want to grab a quick bite, so I usually head to the one on Baggot Street. I do have to say though while the guys here seem nice enough, they always seem under fierce pressure and a little bit snotty. I have been in here several times for handiness sake, and the service leaves a lot to be desired. I hate giving places a bad review, but when you are paying for a service and it stinks… then people have the right to be warned! We’re all under pressure at work, but if I had that attitude, I know I’d be given my marching orders! It’s such a shame for Munchies though because it could be great. The food is great though so go see Chloe in Mayor Square, where you will get your lunch with a smile!

This place stresses me out. It’s so small and gets so crowded amidst the lunchtime rush that I can’t really blame the staff for their blatant impatience at my momentary indecisiveness when ordering(although the general attitude did add to the unpleasantness of ordering lunch here). A heads-up: if you ask for a toasted sandwhich, be prepared to see them slam the grill down on it as if it were a large insect they desperately wanted to quash. What’s more, it’s done with the sambo open so that all the inside ingredients come out completely smushed and with nasty crispy burn ridges on. Maybe this was the girl’s way of venting her frustration at me, or maybe that’s just how Munchies toasties are done… Either way, it was neither appreciated nor enjoyed. Humph :(

I’m not a massive fan of sandwiches for lunch but this places do the best sandwiches apart from Simon’s Place in Georges Street Arcade. They a wide range of breads, a massive assortment of sauces and fresh fresh salad filling. Their menu is quite huge, a leaflet is probably the thing if you want to see all the sandwiches they do but you can always order a custom made one. If you like your sandwiches you will love this place. This place can have epic queue at lunch as the store on baggot street is tiny!

Eh… Came here whilst on holiday in Dublin; nothing too special about this place. I tried a bagel and lox with cream cheese, which was yummy, but being an American, I prefer New York bagels for the texture, the color, and the fluffiness. They did seem to be pretty busy and bustling and the selection of sandwiches was extensive and the smell of the coffee was amazing but prices were a bit high(which was why I chose to get a bagel).

Hmm, Unilocal just suggested I review Munchies and I thought, don’t be silly Unilocal I already have. Surely, as I’m in there every morning I’ve reviewed it. Turns out I was wrong and Unilocal was right. If I haven’t reviewed Keogh’s Café yet, I will be doing do straight afterwards. The reason I mention is that after 2 years working in College Green and going to Keogh’s every morning for coffee I moved to Baggot Street and my biggest concern was where to get my morning white coffee. Baggot Street is, not literally, dripping with coffee! So over my first few weeks in the area I tried Rhubarb café, Café Sol, Insomnia and Munchies sandwich bar. Munchies won. On two counts, the first being that they do a really hot, good coffee, with hot milk. Did I mention it was hot? I hate warm coffee. Secondly, after a couple of weeks they knew me. I walk in and they say ‘white coffee?’ and a few minutes later I hand over my coffee fare and off I go. If I’m awake they’re more than happy to chat, but if I’m not, I just toddle off, hot coffee in hand. I may as well mention, that it is also a sandwich bar. I use the word sandwich very lightly, as they do much fancier things than plain old sandwiches. My favourite is the toasted monster munchie, which has chicken, bacon, cheese, mixed leaves, tomato and ballymaloe relish. I get it without the tomato and with chilli mayo instead of the relish. It’s a bit more expensive than a lot of sandwiches, but they have great quality stuff, a really different selection of fillings and everything is really fresh, they even toast their pine nuts and what not there daily. Oh and they also do local delivery for offices as far as I can work out. See you in the morning for my white coffee Munchies!

Munchies is a great chain of sandwich bars, using super fresh ingredients with a higher than average quality. Unlike many other of its competitors, Munchies has fillings like brie and goats cheese, the markings in my mind of a great sandwich bar. They have a great selection of freshly baked breads to choose from, and Natalie is right, the walnut bread is delish! It was one of the first delis to offer wraps back in the day, and the sundried tomato one is really good. It’s not the cheapest place for a sambo in town, but it is one of the best.

Munchies is the only place that I can find their gorgeous walnut bread. My favourite combo is the walnut bread, turkey, brie and cranberry sauce — ok it’s not for everyone, but it’s so tasty. Their sandwiches are lovely and their fillings and bread are always super fresh. They also have smoothies and fresh juices. So it feels like a healthier type of sambos than the usual.
