This is a decent enough Eddie Rocket’s. It hasn’t had the slick new ‘Rockets’ rebrand bestowed on it yet hat a lot of city centre branches have, but I’m sure they’ll be on their way soon. The main thing is it’s clean, the food is up to par(the chicken goujons are delish actually, got them yesterday for the first time — kinda pricey but yum), and the staff are really friendly. Both staff I dealt with had smiles on their faces and seemed to be fully on top of it, so that’s about it. You know what you’re gonna get. It’s not gonna alight your tastebuds or be somewhere you’re gonna wanna take your Granny on her 80th birthday, but it’s what it says on the tin, and sometimes that’s all you want.

I had just about forgiven Eddie Rockets for the time the one on Dame Street served me a chicken claw in my chicken wings when disaster struck again in a different Eddies when my partner just got served slides on some seriously mouldy burger buns… I mean come on, green mould? isn’t it a little obvious that’s not ok. Definitely reached my final straw with this place. This places only saving grace is the good staff you come across from time to time. I’ll be avoiding this place from now on, except maybe for a sneaky malt from time to time.

I don’t really think you can go wrong in Eddie’s — it does exactly what it says on the tin. They’re all pretty consistent, but some are better than others. Baggot St is my favourite, closely followed by South Anne St. Terenure is good, but not in the top five. My list would continue with Parnell St, then Rathmines and then Stillorgan in fifth place. Terenure would still be in the top ten, but closer to the tenth spot…

I generally don’t mind an Eddie Rockets now and then. You know what you’re getting even if it is a bit pricey. I was intrigued by the shiny novelty of it when I was younger — the sarcastic signs on the walls, the duke boxes(that never seem to work) and the milkshakes in the mixing container. However, I have found that the Eddies in Terenure is consistently awful! They are often all out of certain items. Twice now I have been served reheated chips — more on the burnt side than crispy — and cremated garlic mushrooms. No matter how strong the craving, I generally would prefer to drive to any other Eddie Rockets than this one. And don’t start me on the melted cheese!

I’m slightly at a loss for words on this one. Sad as it sounds I’ve been going to eddie rockets a long, long time. Almost feels like I have share in the place sometimes. There’s an Eddies for every occasion I think. Terenure is local, Dame street, Wexford street and St Anne street all late night after the pub kinda places Foodwise its pretty greasy and filling. The club sandwich would do two people, the chicken tenders and chicken fillet are good. Shakes, burgers, hot hogs and nachos all worth a look, 4.95 for chips certainly ain’t reasonable and probably where it gets the name empty pockets. Although the diner style lost its novelty long ago you could do a lot worse for a quick bite then Eddies. Very child friendly too as the will accommodate birthday parties.

What you see is what you get and in Eddie Rockets, its bright, garish and plastic. American diners are not glamourous — they’re scummy, authentically kitsch and dingy. It’s for this reason that Eddie Rockets and any faked diner style restaurant does not work — they try too hard to peddle a bright, forced, 50s personna that exists only in fantasy. Plus, under those flourescent lights, every single morsel of your dinner shines like a diamond. Don’t get me wrong — the food isn’t bad for what it is. Typical artery-hardening burgers(try one with an egg on top and loads of sauce — it’s messy and satisfying and settles a drink-dodgy stomach) and chips — with big glasses of soft drinks. The staff in this Eddie Rockets are polite and friendly — and although there will often be a chip on the floor here and there, they generally keep the place quite tidy. It’s a little expensive for what is technically a marginally better McDonalds but it”s good for the kids for a candy-coloured treat or for a hangover. Or after 12pm when everywhere else is closed(10% added to bill after midnight) and you fancy a sit down meal.
