I loved this place. Miss it terribly! Amazing food, staff and patrons. I lived across the street, and it pained me every day to see it wasted away :(

Neighbor’s is over on the Dark Side of things, my stomping ground and I’ve been here a few times now. It’s atmosphere is a little dark, but the food and service are both really good. If you’re looking for a place to stop in for a quick bite that’s low key but yummy, here’s a great option. You’ll find a lot of locals and regulars frequenting the place, but it’s usually pretty quiet. There’s plenty to choose from on the menu. They do have an interesting Mexican section, which I have tried from and was not wowed. I prefer to stick with the great fish and chips that are worth the stop.

If you think of a bar in Dartmouth, you usually think of the Downtown core by Alderney, which has about half a dozen bars and restos, or you wander further inward to the suburbs with its smattering of sports bars, but you hardly consider that place in between. Admit it, you always forget to consider Neighbour’s pub. You might drive by it every day on your way to work, but because it’s located in a part of town mostly known for its recycling depot and not much else, it slips under your radar. That’s probably fine by the usual patrons, who know that this is a gem of a watering hole tucked into their neighbourhood. It’s a bar that’s been around for years, and hasn’t seen much updating during those years. It can sometimes feel a bit cavernous, with lots of dark paint, mismatched dark wooden furniture, and well-worn dark carpeting. While it lacks much of a décor, it is clean and well-maintained. Most of the time I’ve been here, the service has been gruff, but efficient. It also depends on your company; if you’re with a regular, or are the regular, you have a bit more sunshine infused in your service. The food isn’t Top Chef worthy, but for a pub, it’s passable. I’ve had the wings, and they’re pretty good. They’re better when you order them on a day other than wing night; the kitchen can pay a little bit more attention to them rather than working on just keeping up with the demand. Neighbours was actually the first place I ever experienced a wing night, and it was good enough not to scare me off. They’ve got a decent selection of beers and alcohol on tap, and daily specials if you’re looking to save a few bucks, although I’m always wary of the ½ price mexican night. All in all, if you’re looking for a spot to grab a beer, eat some wings, and catch the game, this is your spot. You just need to know where to look next time before considering crossing the harbour.

You know? I’m not mad at this place. Actually, I’m a little mad at myself for all the judging this book by its cover that I’ve done over the past four years of driving by and scoffing. For some reason, pubs in Dartmouth that aren’t the Celtic Corner give me a bit of the heebie-jeebies. Once you get inside Neighbour’s, though, it’s quick to feel a bit relieved depending on what you’re expecting. Sure, it’s a little dark and you can definitely feel out of place depending on how many regulars are in for the day, but there’s tons of comfortable seating in sturdy wooden chairs and booths. It had plenty of character and was far less of a dive than I had thought. Servers were moving quickly with mouth-watering fried food piled onto white plates, beers were slung in cold clean glasses, and everyone seemed to be having a good time. I didn’t get to stay long or really indulge in the onion rings and fries I kept seeing go by, but compared to before, I’m actually looking forward to getting the chance to come back.

Meh. This place was the choice of my boyfriend as he wanted to try wings somewhere new. I agreed and I had heard the name tossed around quite a bit so we went. We went at 6pm on a Saturday which is usually a very busy time for pubs and restaurants, but this place had maybe two tables full. We both acknowledged that it looked like a place that Robert Irvine would attack on his show Restaurant Impossible. It was dark, dingey and pretty dated. I ordered a Garrison beer because I love to support the local breweries and who doesn’t love cold beer? That’s about where the good consumables stops though. I ordered the small fish and chips and he ordered an order of home fries and hot wings. My fish was in a batter so thick I was shocked to see that it was actually cooked all the way through. The fries were very clearly frozen and were sitting in puddles of grease, it was pretty unappetizing. In fact I ate maybe 3 french fries since I was pretty full and gross feeling from the over battered fish. I also had to chuckle at the fact that the coleslaw was pretty obviously out of a container instead of made in-house and they served me lemon juice in a packet instead of a wedge of lemon. I can’t really see the juice in a pack being more economical than a wedge of lemon, since lemon wedges are pretty popular in bars and cooking… overall I was severely underwhelmed, and had I not been very hungry I probably would have passed on the meal as a whole. The wings were small and overcooked with little meat. They were very greasy and the hot sauce was pretty standard and out of a bottle. It wasn’t very flavourful, just full of pepper and vinegar notes. The home fries were pretty boring too, no seasoning just potatoes on a plate. Overall the food was about a one on the scale. The only thing that is really giving the extra star is the service. We were greeted immediately and our drink orders were taken and filled quickly. Our server was friendly and offered some advice on what to order. But overall, I won’t be going again for supper. It would be a good venue to watch a game or watch a band if they had them though.

I first discovered this place while with some coworkers for a later dinner on a weeknight in late September. I had heard great things about it and was excited. I ordered the larger steak with homefries and gravy. When it came to my table I was pleasantly surprised. It was a great portion and so yummy. The home fries were amazing and I ate the vegetable of the day as well, even though I do not particularly like cooked carrots. My first experience was great. I went back on my birthday with some family in October and the experience was not as good. I ordered the steak again but this time the steak was so tough I had to get my boyfriend to cut it(it was ordered medium rare, but the cut was different than last time), the home fries were amazing again though. My boyfriend was happy with his chicken sandwich and fries, however the rest of our company was less than impressed for the most part. I ordered a dessert as well(I cannot remember the kind), and it was good but not homemade. Overall, my birthday experience was fair. I went another time with my boyfriend and sat by the fire and ordered the rib special with home fries and he had the chicken sandwich again. I loved my meal and he enjoyed his as well. The only complaint was that it took a long time for him to receive his tea, and I was given regular fries instead of home fries but that was quickly fixed. The last time I went there, with a group of family members before going to tax free shopping at Mic Mac Mall was pretty much a disaster(for everyone else). It was Mexican night so it was packed which resulted in slow(very slow) service. My meal was great, a club wrap with home fries and gravy. Everyone else seemed not to enjoy their meals… there were mix ups with the Chicken Quesidilas(ordered without onions)…and with the rice(asked for white rice, came as red rice). Overall, the experience was not the usual, and I felt bad for highly suggesting this restaurant for our night out. Overall, I still enjoy this restaurant and believe that they have great food. Sometimes it depends on which day/night you go for the quality/taste of the food, but service is generally good(nice servers and a very nice bartender). There are so many things on the menu to try, I’ll have to go back sometime soon to try something new! I would have given it 3.5 stars if possible. I wanted to give it 4 but couldn’t because the experience varies so much each time I eat here.

My fiancé and I have gone to this pub twice; both times have been less than stellar. The first time I ordered the bacon burger with fries. The burger patty was most likely made in house, however, the chefs must not understand the importance of seasoning. The burger was dry and bland. My fiancé ordered the battered fish, which had an asbsurdly thick batter. It was so thick, that the inside was not fully cooked and actually was mushy inside. The second time it was half price mexican nights. My fiancé ordered the same burger I had the first time. Again, it was a horribly under-sea.soned piece of cooked hamburger. I ordered the chicken quesdilla with«red rice». It all was horrible, it had no flavour and was not seasoned in the least. The rice again was not seasoned at all. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone – the food is not made with love, skill or any respect to the product nor good taste.

The 4 is based on it being a great Neighbourhood location that has been around for many years. Nice enough inside with some rooms in the back for groups to gather. I had the roast beef dip which was a good sandwich. Sweet potato fries are always a good thing and while the curry dip wasn’t the best ever, I like curry dip in general.
