Love this place. Exactly what you expect when you walk in. I had the Monday special 2 steaks with onion rings and gravy with their stein lager.

Ok. well i have to say that my girlfriend and i are regulars at the Steak n Stein in Halifax and have no complaints with that location… but this Dartmouth location got me annoyed… we stopped by and proceeded to order… i always request a large stein of Coke/Pepsi with my meal and never have any issues in the Halifax location with that request… but here in Dartmouth i was told i could not have a large mug/stein or pop as they do not allow it… and infact was given the smallest glass they had… even smaller than my girlfriends glass of pop… i do not understand the reasoning for this at the dartmouth location… it is not the first time i was refused a large mug or stein of pop in Dartmouth… for that i refuse to give my business to Steak n Stein Dartmouth location and will happily continue going to Halifax where my business is valued…

Love it because of the friendly atmosphere and the good memories I have there. Staff is friendly. Steak is good enough, but they don’t always cook it like you ask. Free refills on pop. The steak sandwich and garlic bread are both good choice. Girlfriend loves the del monico derby style.

This restaurant has gone way downhill… Have been going here for years. Stopped in tonight to this location(go to the Halifax one more) for the first time in awhile. Prices are quite high for the small portion sizes. The interior is quite shoddy. I noticed other patrons pointing at the ceiling so I looked up to see what they were looking at. The ceiling tiles are falling apart with pieces of fuzzy felt material hanging off. Carpeting is stained, tables and chairs are old and worn out. The bathroom door of the ladies room is so sticky it is like it has been covered in their Steak sauce. The whole place looks like 1986. Gave a rating of a 2 instead of 1 because the food tastes decent and the service is good. Their hours of business listed on a Google search are incorrect they say that they are open every day until 9:00 but closed on Sundays. Well they are actually open on Sundays except closed at 8:00 most days of the week which is far too early for any respectable restaurant. I prefer the Halifax location over this one for their somewhat cleaner appearance and better operating hours but due to the inflated pricing I likely will spend my money elsewhere. If they lowered their prices, improved their hours and renovated everything that is run down and dated they would deserve a higher rating for their menu variety and great customer service from their servers.

Put it this way, I’ve been going here since before I could speak. I went with my boyfriend and ended up getting hair baked into the nachos I ordered. Inbetween the cheese and nachos … I told the waitress it just wasn’t my day, and she brought me a new basket of nachos but I had lost my appetite by that time. I get it humans have hair, and occasionally gets into food, but I’m talking a hair longer then one on my head(and my hair is long)

Well I have been going to steal and stein since I was an infant lol and I get it that its a inexpensive place to get a steak etc etc But tonight I ordered the baked haddock and del Monaco combo with a salad for my side. The fish was just baked no seasoning what so ever and not even a slice of lemon. Very bland. The steak. Well I eat my steak as rare as I can get it and even though I was asked how I like it it did not matter. As it was so paper thin that even just touching the grill for 10 seconds would have cooked it. My grand father knew the owner very well from back when he worked at the old capital store(ironically the sns sits in its old location) and I’m sure he would be just as disappointed as I am in the place. With places like Montana’s and Moxies(chain locations I know) I think the sns needs to up its game a little bit. This is the last time I eat there unless I hear it gets better. Sorry SNS I’ll miss Ya.

Slow service. The thinnest steak I’ve ever seen! A black hamburger literally pitch black burnt hamburger! And bad pop it was flat and watery! I don’t recommend this place at all everyone just save your money and go elsewhere.

The food is good, service is always awesome but I find it’s a bit too expensive now. At one time it was the place to go to get a very reasonable meal for the family and it wouldn’t break the bank. Now 2 of us go and the bank is empty. Lower your prices and we would be there more often.

I’ve been going here once a month or so for twenty years with both of my elderly parents until my mother passed away. Then I started taking my father and my son. I work with a lot of 50-somethings and have recommended this restaurant to many baby boomers looking for a place to take their senior parents. Older people seem to love it. I’ve never been a fan of the food and my son is a vegetarian, but we go here only because of my 90 year old father who likes it. However, tonight is the last time we’ll EVER set foot in the place.(Sorry Dad, just can’t do it anymore!)There have certainly been ups and downs over the years but tonight was pitiful. I won’t go into ALL the details as I don’t want to write a book. It started with being seated at a table that the person on the inside(who is thin!) could not even back out enough to get out of his seat to go to the restroom. While we were deciding what to eat, we ordered our beverages and asked the waiter to put in an order for an appetizer. After about ten minutes he came back to take our order. We then waited and waited and the appetizer never came. A lot of time was going by and I was beginning to give up on the appetizer and expect our meals which finally came about a half hour after ordering. I then said that«I guess we aren’t going to get our appetizer.» Michael, the waiter explained that he didn’t want our meals to sit there, so he brought them out, and they only had two deep fryers, etc., etc. and our appetizer would be coming up «next». None of it made any sense since the appetizer was fried(should have taken 5 minutes to cook) and we had french fries and other deep fried food with the mains which we ordered long after ordering the appetizer. He asked us if we still wanted it. I didn’t because, now I had my main course and didn’t need anything to ward off my hunger, but my son still wanted his share. I told the waiter I didn’t think we should have to pay for it under the circumstances and he told me that wasn’t up to him. Another 10 minutes went by and we got the appetizer when we were halfway through our meal. The waiter told us that he talked to his manager and they would not be removing the appetizer from the bill and started to give us all the details as to why. I cut him off and said that’s fine; it wasn’t about the money, it was about the timing.(At this point, we just wanted to finish eating our meal, pay the bill and leave.) The manager didn’t bother coming to apologize and left that up to the young man who may have bungled the order but certainly wasn’t interested in taking responsibility implying it was all the kitchen’s fault and the fact that they only have 2 deep fryers!(???). The next table over apparently received double orders of something, I overheard so I guess we weren’t the only screw up. Tracy and Steak and Stein, even if you gave us a gift card for unlimited meals forever, we will NOT be back. EVER.

Tried and true, don’t expect the best of the best but price wise it’s a good eat. Great for eating out with a larger group of people with varying tastes and price expectations or family gatherings.

Aaaahhh, Steak and Stein. A good place to eat when you don’t want fast food and you can’t afford a four-star restaurant. The in-laws and I had Thanksgiving dinner here.(Well, lunch.) I opted for something from their brunch menu as I’m not a fan of turkey. I’m glad we went early to avoid the seniors rush a few hours later. Décor-wise, it’s nothing to write home about. It’s large with plenty of elbow room between the tables. Our server was a brusque older woman who was efficient but not terribly friendly. I ordered bacon and eggs with hash browns and toast. The«toast» was horrible: hardened half-burnt bread I could barely get my teeth through. The hash browns appeared to have been deep-fried twice. The bacon was crispy as I requested and the scrambled eggs were okay. As for the turkey dinners, they were quite a size. They used the gravy and a layer of white meat to hide the dark meat. Some people liked the cranberry sauce but some found it sour. I believe the pumpkin pie for dessert was touted as home made, but it was obviously a Sysco-type product. I had lemon meringue pie, which was very good. My MIL raved over her bread pudding. A second server took our dessert orders, as we weren’t all getting the pumpkin pie. She became flustered as some were having theirs to go as well. Rather than write the orders down, we had to repeat our requests several times before she finally got it straight. It was confusing and a waste of time. Overall S&S is just okay. I try to avoid it, but when a loved one requests we eat there I don’t mind. The good thing about their over-large menu is there is something for everyone.

I had my very 1st Steak and Stein experience this past weekend when out with a friend and her kids. I am not a steak eater so Steak and Stein has never appealed to me but it was her kids favorite so thats where we ended up. I have to say it was not horrible, not great but not so bad. I had a Hawaiian Chicken sandwich with sweet potato puffs, the sandwich was pretty good(grilled chicken, pineapple and diana bbq sauce in garlic toast) the chicken was cooked perfectly and juicy and the sauce gave it just enough zing. The sweet potato puffs(or tots) were another story they were lumpy and a little under cooked. The one redeeming feature was the service we were never without cold water/pop and we were checked in on regularly but not in our face. It was the service that bumped this to a 3 star.

The last time I set foot in Steak and Stein was about 7 years ago. Nothing has changed. Actually, when I look at the décor, I don’t think anything has changed since at least the early 90s. We decided to give this place a short for breakfast. The breakfast menu is pretty short, with all of the usual suspects present. After pondering the eggs benedict for a while(somehow I didn’t think S&S could pull off a decent hollandaise), I went for the Big Breakfast. $ 8.99 gets you 2 eggs, bacon, sausage, ham, toast and your choice of either home fries or baked beans, as well as coffee or tea. I got the home fries but also substituted the ham for the baked beans. The coffee was actually pretty good. Eggs were cooked adequately. The sausage however was not good at all, in my opinion, but my girlfriend loved them. I have to praise them for making their own baked beans but there again, I really did not like them. They were extremely sweet and cloying. No thanks. It will likely be a while until my next visit. Judging from the number of people there though, I guess they do appeal to quite a wide crowd.

When we want to go out for a reasonably priced meal, hubby and I head to Steak & Stein. It’s the one place we know where we get consistently good food and great service at a good price. Now me, when I go out I like to order things I wouldn’t typically cook myself or can’t cook at home because of hubby’s shellfish allergy and dislike of anything seafood. Hubby on the other hand is a red meat and potatoes kind of guy and almost consistently will order steak wherever we go. He can grill the best steak I’ve ever eaten. I’ve never really understood why he is so enamored of the steak at Steak & Stein other then to say he knows what he’s going to get. I had the steak once and find it to be thinly cut, over seasoned and marinated into submission. Just not my cup of tea, or cut of steak. I have found several other items on the menu I do enjoy. If I’m really hungry I will get one of the incarnations of smoked meat on rye, the melt or the reuben. There have been occasions where I’ve taken half home for lunch the next day. Initially my side of choice was sweet potato fries but got tired of them and have switched to the potato crisps, like a home made potato chip. If my eyes aren’t bigger then my belly I get the 1⁄3 rack of ribs with the potato crisps. The ribs are always done just right and three is just enough for a satisfying meal. Now if I really want to splurge on the calories I go for the Friday special of seafood casserole. It’s the richest, creamiest, cheesiest I’ve ever had. Now cheese is my favourite indulgence and why I like the seafood casserole but it might not be for everyone. It doesn’t come over a carb so I would suggest ordering rice as your side to absorb all that cheesy, creamy goodness. We used to order appetizers, like a couple times the onion blossom which was just way too much for two people. So then we’d just have an order of onion rings or garlic cheese bread. But eventually we resigned ourselves to the fact that if we had appetizers we could never finish our main. I’ve rarely had room for dessert so can’t really comment on them. For a reasonably priced, consistently good meal this is a pretty good spot. It’s busy and noisy but service is generally fast and friendly. While it’s not fine dining, they must be doing something right if they are still around after all these years.

I enjoyed S&S a lot more before I went vegetarian. Why? Cheap meat. And, yes, you get what you pay for. But it gets a 4 Star due to a variety of factors: * Servers: friendly and attentive. I’ve rarely gone without a fresh drink for more than a minute. * Ambiance: very family-oriented. You’re encouraged to applaud when it’s someone’s birthday. * Specials: seasonal classics and random specials. * Meat: lots of meat! Seriously, a huge selection of cheap steaks. I highly recommend the wonderfully salty derby sauce. * Menu: big! Lots of appetizers and a fairly good dessert selection. For those of us who don’t eat meat, there’s a lot less selection but the Greek salad’s pretty good. * Drinks: bottomless glasses of soda or iced tea. And in big beautiful mugs! * Breakfast: a relatively recent development but a fairly good selection. Now, I’m not saying that every time I’ve gone, it’s been the perfect experience but, on the whole, it’s an enjoyable family dinner place.

I’ve come back here about a month ago with my friend and I’ve got to say I’ve had one of the best meals I’ve eaten at a restaurant. It was a roast dinner with boiled veggies and a nice homestyle bun and gravy. It tasted as if my Nanny had just made it. Delicious!
