Just an update: Friday nights upstairs at New City are now officially Mod Club nights. The same DJs who once spun killer dance parties at Halo now hold court over the Likwid Lounge floor; expect classic rock ‘n’ roll, britpop and soul, boys and girls dressed in their best, grooving to excellent tunes. Finally, a failsafe Friday night good time.

If you want a more subdued Suburbs experience, Likwid Lounge is the upstairs chill zone at New City. It’s a separate entity, but it still has an alternative vibe. There are lots of tables and some leather couches, a bar, some pool tables and a cool crowd that’s taking it easy. Meanwhile, if you change your mind and want to burn off those G&T’s you can head on downstairs to New City and hit the dance floor, although there’s a cover charge. Sometimes I feel like being in different surroundings but don’t feel like the spectacle of New City. Likwid Lounge is a good option. You can show up in your jeans and polo or your hooker boots and Geisha make-​up. Anything flies — but judgment.
