Great little spot. Hard to find anything for lunch anymore that isn’t fast food. Nice homemade soups and sandwiches. The only downfall is you have to find a place to park which isn’t easy in downtown

Let me start out with the fact that I walk by this place on my way to work every day. The smell of ham cooking as I walk by the open door nearly sends me into oncoming traffic! I do have a tendency to go there for lunch, as it’s one of the closest ‘cheap’ eats to my office. My favourite is the smoked meat, on rye. On occasion the rye has been a tad dry(yesterday’s loaf perhaps??) but normally it’s super soft and doughy, and the meat is piled on… paired with crisp veggies and mayo and mustard… omg it’s sooo good!!! I would say the best sandwich on the menu!

How this place doesn’t have five stars is beyond me. It’s a simple place. Cafeteria-style café that will make you anything you’d like for a VERY reasonable price. Some of the cheapest prices in the city. I work down the street and I can tell you I live off this place. They have plenty of «to go» items that are actually healthy(assorted fruit etc). I love this place and I almost hate to put it up here because I don’t want it to get so popular that they raise prices.

I had heard nothing but great things about this place. «Get a breakfast sandwich. They’re huge and amazingly delicious!» So I did. It wasn’t huge. Nor was it amazingly delicious. It was measly and amazingly bland. Did I just hit an off day? Or am I a breakfast sandwich snob and this just simply wasn’t good enough? The few sandwiches I’ve had, though, have been quite yummy. I dig the avocado and sprouts on a bagel smeared with cream cheese. Simple, yet delightful. The turkey cranberry wrap is nothing to sneeze at either. AYLI has the benefit of a great location on its side. Its surrounded by businesses and office buildings. It sort of hit the location jackpot. Aside from seeming to stay fairly busy I don’t find it has much presence. But then again, I guess given the nature of how they work they don’t need bells and whistles. They’re a simple place. You walk in, duck around a few small tables and chairs, place or order at the counter, pay and you’re on your way. Its not a pretty place. The service is mediocre. But from what I can tell the food is decent. So, if you can put up with a few minutes of unenthusiastic service for a decent sandwich, this is likely a good option for you.

I went to As You Like It based on recommendations that I received from friends and colleagues and I wasn’t overly impressed. It doesn’t have anything that sets it apart from any other sandwich shop that you might find in a food court. They do have a good variety of sandwiches to choose from and also had quite an assortment of sides and drinks. It was reasonably priced for what you get and the atmosphere inside is pretty typical. All in all, I wasn’t overly wow’d by the shop but if I’m craving a yummy sandwich and am in the area, I’ll try another visit!

Things I like about this tiny sandwich joint on Hollis St: 1. Sprouts! You can never find a place that puts bean sprouts on sandwiches. I love that they have them. 2. Not mayonnaise-y tuna! Another total plus — their tuna isn’t overloaded with so much mayo that you can’t even taste the fish. Co-workers might not like this as much later on, when I’m very smelly. 3. Wax paper! With a dad from upper Ontario, all my sandwiches as a child were wrapped in wax paper. I don’t even think we had plastic wrap in the house. Makes me feel nostalgic and happy to unwrap my yummy lunch. AYLI is just right for me, though I can admit that it’s nothing out of the ordinary. Just good, fresh ingredients, standard pricing and quick service. Lunch win in my books.

Surrounded by office buildings, this no frills sandwich shop proves that it’s all about location, location, location. Not much different than those cafeteria-style cafés that you’ll find in larger office buildings in bigger cities — you know the ones that don’t even need names because their only customers arrive via elevator? — AYLI isn’t much more than an order counter, drink coolers, and diner chairs. It’s unassuming, casual and perfect for those days when work is kicking your ass and you just need to grab a fast lunch to bring back to your desk without having to swap pleasantries. Maybe that’s why I didn’t feel entirely comfortable there. The memories… On the plus side, the ingredients for the breakfast and lunch menus looked really fresh and each ‘wich is made on order rather than the plastic-wrapped atrocities you’ll find at similar spots. Great to know about in a pinch, but definitely not a spot for those really looking to make their lunch hour count.

I’ll eat anywhere that uses a Shakespeare reference. One day I’ll open a restaurant called«Twelfth Bite» and… well, that’s about as far as I got with that. I just thought it was funny. Am I right?! When I worked downtown, As You Like It was like a happy oasis of bread that could cure any sort of writer’s block or basic work drudgery I may have been feeling. Personally, I think a good sandwich can change your life — and I’m not saying that as a person who depends on food to deal with his emotions. Sure you can go to Pete’s and grab a panini or sandwich or what have you but be prepared to wait at least 20 minutes during peak lunch times. Also, prepare to deal with the indifferent hipsters that will be making said sandwich. «Hi, I’d like the roasted veggie panini but could you leave out the tomato?» «No tomato?» «No, thank you, I’m not a fan.» «Whatever dude, it’s your loss.» I will never forget this exchange. Ever. I used to work in the food service industry, I know it sucks and that most days you’d rather get branded by a rancher named Ennis than make someone another bloody sandwich but listen up, Apron — I don’t like tomatoes and I don’t need you to criticize that. So if you want a prompt, friendly and non-judgmental transaction that requires very little explanation to your dietary preferences, choose As You Like It. Compared to other shops downtown it is one of the best and pretty on point with it’s pricing too. I recommend the Egg Salad or Veggie sandwiches because if a place can craft a sandwich comprised only of egg or vegetables and it has me writing about it, you know it’s good. The seating is not exactly stellar but AYLI is located in an office tower so you’ll probably score a spot for you and a friend if required. Otherwise, grab your lunch and run to the nearest secluded area so you may bask in its tasty glory. It’s made how you like it. And I like mine delicious.

This is a nice choice for the sandwich lovers, who are looking for the traditional sandwich. No wraps, just good old bread, meat and toppings. This is in a great location along Hollis St. to grab lunch. The staff is nice and sometimes going back to what we know is best, is a great choice. I really like this spot.

I don’t know why, but it’s hard to find a simple sandwich shop in Halifax, and I love a good sandwich at lunchtime. Go away with your paninis and your wraps and your ciabattas. I want a nice hunk of meat and cheese between two slices of bread and a big glass of milk. Call me crazy! This shop does exactly what I like — they offer a few types of bread, a few types of fillings, a few types of vegetables — and they put ‘em all together to make a delicious lunchy treat. If I worked downtown, I’d probably eat here every day because the tuna and cream cheese on swirly rye just turns my crank. They also offer healthy snacks all made up with veggies and dip, and real fruit like apples — apples! — for the downtown crowd who are sick of reaching for Timbits and chips at 3 o’clock.
