How disappointing to find that Outside the Lines has closed its doors permanently. Apparently this gem of a book-nook has been lacking financial prosperity for quite some time, and has recently shut things down for good. This loss only reaffirms our need to support our local book shops. With the bloat of places like Chapters and Amazon, our little guys are loosing business, and thus, we are loosing a little bit of integrity here. Outside the Lines was a perceptive perspective, and its presence will be sadly missed. Lets keep on keepin’ on with our locals. these are places we can go to for quality literature and the avoidance of celebrity memoirs.

It seems that every time I travel along Quinpool, I find something new. Outside the Lines is a great addition to Quinpool Rd. This is an independent book store that is done very well. I did not see the top best sellers here, but nor should you be looking for them here. This store is catering to those who like to challenge themselves and live outside the box. Which in my opinion is a better place to be. They have varied topics and I am sure something to get your interest. Stop by and have a look.

This is a treasure of a book store and you can find it on the oh so dazzling Quinpool Road. It’s funny, by first blush Quinpool looks like a bit of a dive yet it houses some of the greatest places to shop and eat in Halifax. This bookshop is no exception to the high caliber offerings Quinpool boasts. You can find great political books here as well as up-to-date texts pertaining to climate change and world issues, not to mention fiction. It’s a bit of a rebel bookstore, striving for revolution and global comradery through literature: what a great idea! You can also find fair trade chocolate and coffee for sale at this shop(beans not beverages), as well as witty fridge magnets and calendars. If you’re a student and you’re lucky enough to have a professor whose in the know, you may just find that you’re texts have been ordered into this shop and not the campus bookstore. Swing by and take a gander. Heck! Why not make a purchase and support this great local book-slinging shop!

Outside The Lines is a great little bookstore on Quinpool Road that always has a lot of interesting books on display. This isn’t the place to find the latest Stephanie Meyer’s disaster or the novelization of Terminator: Salvation. No sir, not here. These books are a little more offbeat. Inquiring books for inquiring minds. So inquiring minds want to know, why does Outside The Lines seem to be a little slow stocking new releases? I’ve gone in here so many times(as my first stop) looking for a book the was recently released only to find that they had none on order, or the order was yet to arrive. I know I’m not going to the wrong type of store because the books I’m looking for always seem to arrive eventually and are displayed in the front window. There is an interesting assortment of critical books in the store, not your light, Sunday afternoon fair, but really interesting stuff that deserves your attention. The staff are friendly and chatty and quick to recommend books. In the past I have purchased books here on a whim, but every time I am actively seeking a book Outside The Lines seems to drop the ball. Great store, great books, but until I’m able to buy the book I want on its release date, I’m stuck giving Outside The Lines four stars.

This is the type of place that I can easily spend hundreds, given free reign with my bank card and a lack of motivation to feed/shelter myself. When I was in this week I had to try especially hard to prevent myself from buying anything. Outside the Lines has sections such as: Canadian Fiction, American History, International Fiction as well as a healthy little second hand section. I was particularly tempted by: Richard Wright’s ‘Black Boy’ as well as Gaile Parkin’s ‘Baking Cakes in Kigali’. I definitely recommend supporting this local independent little bookshop!

Outside the Lines: Books for Critical Minds is an «alternative» bookstore, in the sense that you probably won’t find Oprah’s book-club picks prominently displayed on the front table here. What you will find are books that challenge, inspire, and make you(and your kids) think a bit… and that’s good. Right? This small, independent book shop has a good selection of both fiction and non-fiction, and also has some really fun gift items like mugs with clever sayings on them, and fridge magnets(my personal favourite) called«Magnetic Personalities» — which are little stuffed likenesses of literary, political and artistic icons like Virginia Woolf, Dorothy Parker, and Salvadore Dali. Come for the books, stay for the gew-gaws. My kind of shop.
