Not very often do I rate a 4 or 5 star. This place deserves the 4 star rating. We ordered take out last night at Southern Smoke house. Upon entering the restaurant you are greeted with the incredible smell of a smokehouse. The décor was simple and the restaurant was clean and we’ll kept. There were quite a few full tables enjoying their meals. We waited for about 15 mins until our food was ready. I noticed they had an extensive menu of brews on tap including local beers. The food smelled heavenly all the way home. When we settled in and finally ate the experience was fantastic. Beautiful smoked brisket served with tangy homemade slaw and Texas toast and delicious smoked ribs with the house bbq sauce and Texas toast. The slaw was missing from the ribs order. However the food was fantastic. Our dinner cost just over $ 30. We had leftovers for the next day. Today I used the leftover brisket and sliced it and added it to a stir fry with onions, peppers and noodles. I used a red curry tai sauce. It was fantastic simply because the smokiness of the amazing brisket permeated the stir fry. Excellent food. Great prices. Definitely will return. This is now our favourite BBQ place.

Excellent — we had a sample platter, Brisket, Burnt ends, Pig Jowl, Ribs — this was the best BBQ food I have tasted in Hamilton — by a long margin. I am a BBQ Pitmaster and a Certified BBQ Judge.

Great BBQ! Brisket was fantastic… lots of flavor, super tender. Ribs had great flavor, basic rub of salt & pepper, but pretty tough. Needed more time in the cooler. Mac was awesome, beans were a bit underdone and tough. Burnt ends were amazing and sausage had great flavor and snap. Star of the night was the Butchers Popcorn, deep fried pork jowl… like little meat angels dancing across my tongue and melting in my mouth. They need this at theaters…

Found southern smoke BBQ house through Unilocal today and was happy we did — great service — staff checked in on us often — large portions — I had the pulled pork sandwich and hush puppies and fries — very tasty and filling — fresh cut fries were great — friend had the plate of pulled pork — he wished he had the sandwich — ribs looked amazing — will have to go back next time in Hamilton

We went a couple months back. New to Hamilton… I guess we had high expectations. Story short… we won’t be returning. Food was cold and seemed like it had been sitting around for a while. Not fresh.

It’s not bad barbecue but its low on the smoked flavour compared to other BBQ joints in the city and in a day and age where peanut allergies are widespread, they unfortunately cook with peanut oil which means all the food(and I mean all, as I asked about what oil they use to cook and was told the peanut oil they cook the chicken in gets into all the food due to splatter) is contaminated with it, so this place is a no go zone for those with nut allergies.

Omg this place is great. The portions were huge. The two options for BBQ sauces were perfect and the guys at the grill came by to make sure everything was great. They were fun loving and offered samples of the ‘popcorn’ for us to try. I had so much food I had to take a doggy bag! The crowd is mixed, lots of families and the atmosphere was casual. Will be going back for sure.

I assume that if you’re considering Southern Smoke then you have at least a vague idea of what you’re in for. This is no fine dining establishment. There is no silver to be polished. But what they do they do well. If you’ve ever worried about the sad excuse for meat on a Kelsey’s burger, rest assured Southern Smoke has you covered. Not convinced? Show up an hour before they open — you’ll smell them cooking in there, and it will smell so good you won’t care that you’ll have to kill an hour at Foamload before you can eat. Don’t feel left out just yet — there are veggie options too! And they sound great! But I don’t cook meat at home, so when I hit up Southern Smoke it’s definitely for the brisket and pulled pork. The redneck poutine is also amazing, so get one to share. I have never done take away, but it’s a pretty slick operation. Order at the counter, wait to get called. It’s like Starbucks but without the illiterate fool writing your name on a cup. Try it.

The first time I visited Southern Smoke I had a great experience everything was tender and tasted awesome! Sad to say the last two times I went were freaking god awful I thought maybe it was a fluke the first time I recieved bad food but no it wasnt. I AMSHOCKED at the disgraceful meal I was served. I got 4 orders of butchers popcorn THATWEREBURNTTOALLHELL like not scrape it off burnt, completely unedible. I took one bite into my burger to find that it was cold and raw in the middle, the burnt ends my wife ordered were the only saving grace they tasted mediocre but were drenched in grease they never cooked it on the flat top like last time just out of a bin and slopped into my takeout container, the whole bottom of the container including the bread and slaw had so much grease she could only finish a couple of bites before feeling ill. Me and the guys at the shop order all the time, I just dont understand how it used to be so awesome before but the last two times received something my dog wouldnt even eat. Someone should be fired there maybe its just a quality control issue can be saved… but for now ill stick with the many other places to eat on ottawa because the fact of the matter is I payed a moderatly premium price(its not cheap like they say in the description) for food here and expect a lot better than this, i can safely say you lost about 11 customers just from my shop alone tonight.

Great poutine and nachos. This is the go-to spot for amazing poutine, «Redneck Poutine» First heard about this place through the food truck during Super Crawl — seriously this poutine is delicious, much better than Smokes! Service is great — staff is very friendly. Owner/manager is very nice. Lots of street parking. Recommend 100%

I just had lunch at the Southern Smoke House Barbeque restaurant in Hamilton and it was amazing. I had the beef brisket melt sandwich and it was so good. I talked with one of the chefs and they use a competitive style smoker that makes their product have incredible flavour. I’m taking my wife the next week and would recommend this place(on Ottawa street) which makes some of the best BBQ I have ever had! Can’t wait to go back… enjoy!

I was pretty excited when I found out that Southern Smoke was setting up on Ottawa St N. Great addition to the restaurants that are already there. Food was priced reasonably and tasted fantastic. They even had a vegetarian option that they call The Lazy Hunter. It’s basically a giant, delicious portobello mushroom sandwich with a garlic sauce that was to die for. The brisket was tender and full of flavour. There’s a weekend breakfast menu and a kids menu too. The atmosphere was fun and casual. They did a great job renoing the old deli. The only thing that need work is their side fries. They tasted pretty good but man were they ever mushy. I’ll give them a 5 star rating even with the mushy fries. The place was full of happy well fed people.
