This place is renamed. It is now called The Coconut Grove. Please see review for Coconut Grove.

This place would probably get not better reviews but more business if there were better signage. Located on a commercial block but in a residential area, actually right beside a «not so relaxing feeling» Corporate Inn, with no direct access. Entrance is on the side street, almost hidden with a wall & down a few steps. But the resto is quite spacious, & offers good food/service, though i think it’s more sri lankan than indian/singaporean. Decent free parking on the side streets.

There was something stinking inside when we went there, we were told that it was burnt plastic smell from kitchen which had accidantly burnt plastic bag, but there was definitely something more than that. Food was okay.

Nooru Mahal is tucked away in the corner of what looks like the common passageway to a hotel. The signage on the outside was somewhat misleading as it said Coconut Grove. We were surprised to find their papadums and pakoras grease-free and flavourful, also available as soon as we sat down. Touted as a restaurant with authentic Indian, Sri Lankan and Singaporean flavours, I went in adamant to see if their dosas were as good as their menu promotes as the one with the«Best dosa in BC.»(Or maybe it was in Vancouver) In any case, we had Lamb Vindaloo Dosa, Beef Madras Curry and extra rotis and garlic naans, all of which were tender or crispy where they’re supposed to be. We had gone in on Sunday where they had a buffet for $ 15 from 12pm till 4pm. It was unfortunate that not too many people came in but this restaurant is a gem of a place where we enjoyed all of our dinners for a reasonable price in the peace and quiet of a well-serviced restaurant.

It’s now called ‘The Coconut Grove’, kinda odd place, food is very good, if you check in with your Unilocal App you get a discount. Owner told us they were preparing to change it up and open up for Sunday Brunch. I’ll give these guys another shot, it’s too bad the room has no windows, its kinda like eating in your parents basement with no windows.

Best Indian food in New West hands down. I love south Indian style and only found this place due to a groupon style coupon. Yummy!

This resturant has the best food i have had in a long time. The butter chicken is so flavourful and just the right amount of spice. The portions are an excellent size. i usually spend about 25 bucks and had enough food to last me three or four days in left overs alone. the only thing I would say bad about this food is the na’an bread can be inconsitant. Sometimes its just took soggy adn overly greased. Otherwise its awesome! I highly recommend!

So I purchased a Groupon type deal for this place as it was close by and then I sort of forgot about it for a while. But I gave it a try tonight and I’m now a fan. The summary first — food was fantastic(compliments to the chef), great value and great service. Now onto the meat and potatoes. It’s within walking distance, which means I will become a regular. It is at the bottom of what appears to be, as others have pointed out, a budget hotel. We had the beef curry and the Chicken Kothu Roti. Beef curry was excellent and I really, really liked the Chicken Kothu Roti. Food — check. The service was excellent. Server was responsive, polite, helpful and actually stopped me from ordering too much(how often does that happen?) — I looked at the prices($ 7-$ 8) of a couple of dishes and assumed that they would be small so I ordered two dishes. He told me I should hold off on the second and he’d come back after to see if I still wanted it. Good thing he did because it took a seriously manly effort to finish one off(it was huge! but I needed to impress the girl I was with — the fellas will know what I’m talking about). Service — check. Prices, what can I say — for a variety of dishes it’s pretty much take out prices for dining in — loving it. One $ 7-$ 8 dish I had would easily be enough for two meals. The more traditional curry dishes were in the $ 11-$ 12 range, but still fantastic. Prices — check. Atmosphere and décor as tasteful and appropriate. I don’t go out to eat for this reason(I’m a food + value type of guy) so to me, as long as it’s clean(check) and isn’t grossly inappropriate I don’t particularly care — but they did a good job. Atmosphere — check. Can’t believe how empty it was on Friday evening(it was a long weekend, mind you) with one other pair the only others in at prime time dinner. In any case, I highly encourage area folks(in particular, but anyone in general) to give it a shot. This is purely for selfish reasons — I would like to see them operating for a long time so I have a great, local restaurant to patronize.

First off all My son was being respectful towards your hostess when she asked about the food. And he didn’t wanted to be mean towards her. 2nd. we are not from any of your restaurant competitor we are just regular customers. we live in new west. and your restaurant is very close to us. and we were so happy when we heard that there is a dosa restaurant around here. we were really excited to go and try it out. unfortunately but truly it was a very bad experience.

So I live a quick walk from Nooru Mahal and I’ve always been a little wary of it since it’s on the ground floor of what appears to be a bit of a seedy hotel. However a desire for Indian food, and laziness prompted me to go investigate. As I discovered, this place is pretty awesome. The décor leaves a lot of be desired, but the food makes up for the lack of décor. They specialize in South India, Sri Lankan cuisine, so it’s a welcome change from the typical north Indian food you get in Vancouver. Their dosa’s are a delight. The dosa’s are light and cripsy, and the fillings are generous and tasty. I tried the Lamb Palak and the Chicken Vindaloo dosa’s and both were perfectly spiced. They manage to make the food wonderfully spicy without it overpowering the food. If you don’t feel like a dosa they also do a whole range of delicious curries. Like the dosa filling, they are very flavourful and perfectly spiced. The best part is, each curry comes with rice and roti as part of the pice.

When I heard that there was a new restaurant in New West with dosas on the menu, it took me a mere day to get myself over there and try it out. We have some good Indian restaurants around these parts, but not dosas! And as it turns out, Nooru Mahal has a pedigree — this is the second location of a restaurant in Vancouver of the same name. Now, I’ve never been to the Vancouver branch, but the New West one has a few hurdles to jump as far as its location goes. It’s tucked away in the basement of the Corporate Inn and the restaurant is cavernous, yellow, and when I was there, almost completely empty and only half-lit. The Indian music was good, but when it ended and no one put on a new CD, the room became pretty quiet. The menu is as vast as the space, offering Indian, Sri Lankan, and Singaporean food, as well as Western dishes(this must be for the hotel guests who don’t necessarily want spicy food), and of course, dosas — 30 kinds of dosas. We ordered Lamb Palak and Chicken Palak, and the result was total dosa deliciousness. Crispy crepes, spot-on chili and coconut chutneys, and a filling that was a festival of tender meatiness in perfectly spiced sauce. Service was friendly, and they managed not to hover either, even though there were only a few customers in the restaurant at the time and it’s just this big open space. They have a couple kinks to work out, like perhaps putting some ice in the water, but the food is definitely good enough to overcome a bit of strangeness in the general atmosphere of the joint, which I hope can be remedied in time. You know something? Writing this review has ignited a dosa craving anew … I have a local dosa place, oh happy day.
